Pininfarina H2 Speed concept, a hydrogen supercar

The Italian design and engineering firm is currently displaying the Pininfarina H2 Speed concept in Geneva. The supercar runs hydrogen fuel cell technology, and is “halfway between a racing prototype and a production supercar.” The supercar was developed in collaboration with GreenGT – a company that designs, develops and produces clean and sustainable propulsion systems.

Outside, the H2 Speed is based on the traditional styling of sports cars and has a carbon frame underpinning it. Pininfarina says “all parts of the layout have been designed for the correct distribution of weights to be able to transfer the power and enormous torque of the Full Power Hydrogen system to the ground.”

At the front, there’s a centre duct that allows for air to flow through, channelled to sides of the cabin and in turn cooling the engine compartment. Additionally, the front has two reversed L-shaped wings for air flow, and a pair of LED daytime running lights. In the back, the H2 Speed gets a vertical fin and a large rear spoiler to provide enhanced downforce.

In addition, the bonnet has two air intakes designed to cool the electric motors. The white body colour is inspired by the Sigma Grand Prix, while there’s also a touch of vermilion and acid yellow to highlight functional areas. It sits on OZ Racing, 19-inch wheels in front and a 20-inch set at the rear.

It takes into consideration the large hydrogen cylinders, which are faired instead of being integrated into the body. It can be seen in the rear part of the fairing and allows for easy access to the fuel cap. Aerodynamic flow is enhanced through the side panels, while two big lateral radiators are in front to cool the fuel cell block. It only takes three minutes to fill up the hydrogen tank.

Power-wise, there’s a pair of electric motors that allows the H2 Speed to produce a total of 503 hp. There’s a direct transmission with torque vectoring that sends power to the rear wheels. The H2 Speed will go from 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and to a top speed of 300 km/h.

As the H2 Speed concept is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, it emits zero emission, save for water vapour released into the atmosphere. To add to that, Pininfarina says that the sound emitted by the H2 Speed’s electric motors are close to silent.
