Uber accepting cash payments in JB starting today

RM Credit Card

Cashless payment has been one of Uber’s features since its 2014 launch in Malaysia, and the fact that the fare is auto billed to your credit card is liked by many including this rider for its convenience. But that limits Uber to those who own credit cards, and there are many who are more comfortable with cash. Its main rival Grab offers both card and cash payment options.

It appears that Uber has done its market research and will start accepting cash payments. Tests will start today in Johor Bahru. “JB, as the largest city down south, and its close proximity to KL and Singapore, provides us with the right environment and sophisticated rider and driver base to conduct this cash experiment,” Uber said.

Uber Malaysia GM Leon Foong said cash was how most Malaysians paid. “With the introduction of this cash payment test, our technology becomes instantly accessible to more people in Johor Bahru,” he said in a statement.

This announcement comes two weeks after Uber said it was thinking about accepting cash payments here. If the move spreads to other cities where its services are available (Klang Valley, Penang and latest addition Ipoh), Uber could potentially woo riders served by Grab and regular taxis.

Uber’s cash movement is still at the pilot stage, and the statement added that not all riders will see the cash option on its app right away. One can sign up at get.uber.com/go/ubercashjb and test if the cash payment option is available to them. If it is, select “CASH” as your payment option before you request a ride.

Accepting cash as a form of payment is the end of smtg amazing which uber is good for. This could lead to the haggling culture in the long run.

some people might take it as free ride!
so the driver will lodge police report
    police wont take any action
end up -> only accept for credit card payment

I agree with you. which uber driver dares to lodge a report since uber drivers are illegal? this might risk the uber driver himself getting into further trouble. also, it is inconvenient for the driver to carry extra change and risk getting robbed.

As usual, uber always think of riders as priority but drivers as dirt. look at how they reduce the fares but still taking 20% commission.

Still prefer Credit Card payment system. But not everyone has one.

I suggest Uber to starts accepting Bank Transfer(10cents fees) direct into Driver Personal Bank Account then upload Bank Transfer Receipt into Uber Apps.

  • To make Uber more accessible to a lot more users, just give a tiny card payment terminal to the drivers. This is the most preferred payment method to most people in Malaysia. Just look at how payments are done at hypermarkets and gas stations. Few are still using cash. I am not sure who concluded those who do not use virtual card payments prefer cash. Remember, it costs time and money to get cash. There is something between virtual card and cash – physical card, which virtually everyone has more than one, and frequently using it.

this is good idea. What about used the mobile terminal that connected to mobile phone like the one CIMB and maybank used. it’s small.. very handy and quite fast. Uber should research this and alternative payment method. Cash should be last option.

Then uber would have to round up the fares just like Grab, where your fare won’t have cents.

Why not include touch n go card as 1 of the payment method?
