VIDEO: Stuntman backflips over moving Formula E car

Jumping over a moving vehicle is hard enough to do, but a backflip – with the car unseen, no less – borders on suicide. Formula E, together with stunt performer, free runner and gymnast Damien Walters attempted just such a stunt, in a new video titled “Leap of Faith.”

Performed at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in Mexico City, the stunt was conducted with the car travelling at a steady 100 km/h. A laser timer triggered by the passing car was used to count Walters to the exact time he needed to jump to clear the speeding race car. It took two days of planning and rehearsals – with the car travelling offset of Walter on practice runs – to get the timing just right.

“I’ve done loads of dangerous stunts in my career, but I’ve got to admit that I’ve never been as nervous as I was for this one,” Walters said. “I’m thrilled with how it worked out though, and it’s a credit to Formula E that they gave us the opportunity to do something so dramatic!”

The awe-inspiring result, you can watch in the video above. Better yet, pick up your phone and watch it in full 360-degree glory below to see the stunt unfold from the cockpit.
