Audi is currently working on a new sports car that will sit between the Audi TT and the R8, according to a report by Auto Bild. Said to be called internally as the PO455, should it enter into production, the sports car will likely be called the R6.
Unlike the Lamborghini-based R8, it is said that the sports car will share the same platform as the mid-engined Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. According to the report, the reason for this move, is to spread the costs that come from the development of the said platform using an economies of scale strategy.
Apparently, another reason behind the creation of the R6 is to help push Audi’s sub-brand – Audi Sport and “close the gap” between the successful TT and “rather unsuccessful” R8, the report stated.
On that note, the engine will come from Audi itself, and it will also sport quattro all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the report goes on to highlight that the entry-level model of the R6 will have about 280 hp, the mid-range model with 340 hp, and the top model with around 400 hp.
The report noted, however, that the green light has not been given for the production of such a car. That said, if it indeed goes through, the Audi R6 could be previewed next year and be on its way into showrooms by 2018. So guys, would a “baby R8” be of any interest to you? Yaloh. Can gip excuse like Audi is for upper middle keras not like Posh lah, or its based on “old” Cayman platform lah, or 4 Rings have bad fengshui here compared to star or propeller lah, just cuz it doesnt come with pool.
Would probably buy one as i just cant spend that money onan R8. Could be a great idea if it has the 2.5 from rs3. Needs good sound and ill buy one for sure
Not at those power levels.. Audi just released their TTRS with 395bhp. If they’re trying to fill a gap between the TT and R8, it’ll likely have a price tag to match. I could see the base model starting around $65K-80K, but that base model would also have to start in the high 3’s near 400bhp (to compete with a comparably priced TTRS). With an upper level (R6 plus) model boasting near 500bhp, again staying within the boundaries of the TTRS and the base R8 in both price and power figures. The R6 might have the TTRS beat with mid engine balance, and a better power to weight ratio, but then again, the TTRS is likely the more practical choice.. Why I even bother bringing up “practicality” in a discussion about sports cars I don’t know. Either way, I’m interested to see where this goes.
