Not content with leading the sales charts in Germany, the Ford Mustang has been announced as the best-selling sports coupe worldwide in 2015. According to the Blue Oval, the achievement comes following its first year of global availability in 140 markets.
Ford managed to sell around 110,000 Mustang Coupes, making it the only sports coupe to sell more than 100,000 units in 2015. Ford sold around 30,000 Mustang Convertibles, for total nameplate sales of 141,868 vehicles – making the Mustang the best-selling two-door sports car in the world.
More impressively, the record was achieved despite limited availability for most of the year in key markets like China and the United Kingdom. Data from 2015 indicated that sales of the Mustang has the potential to grow overseas in 2016 as many markets begin to take delivery of their full allocation. Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst stated that global customers are most interested in V8-equipped Mustangs.
A brief breakdown of the numbers revealed that more than 13,000 customers in Europe placed an order for a Mustang last year, where 4,700 units have been delivered. To date, there are more than 16,600 Mustang orders since it went on sale there last summer.
Outside of Europe, the Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe in China during the fourth quarter of 2015, with the EcoBoost version being favoured. In Australia, strong demand for the pony car resulted in the car being sold out through 2017, but an additional 2,000 Mustangs are slated to ship Down Under by the end of this year.
Closer to home, we are still awaiting the Malaysian debut of the Ford Mustang, which was sighted recently. Tentative pricing (in June 2015) of the Mustang was quoted at RM435k-RM450k for the 2.3 litre EcoBoost and RM550k-RM565k for the 5.0 litre V8. Will we further contribute to the Mustang’s success? We’ll have to wait and see.
