Hyundai patents a steering wheel with touch controls

Hyundai touch sensitive steering wheel patent-01

According United States Patent Application Publication documents, Hyundai has filed a patent for a steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls. Said steering wheel comes with two touch inputs and can be operated with a glove.

The first input, as stated in the patent, is a touch input that “receives a touch” and may include a touch sensor that outputs an electrical signal to correspond to a capacitance change when there is contact with the surface. A touch controller that detects a central point of touch and correct it is also part of the whole system.

Said touch device may also include a “graphical user interface” display, while the controller is able to change the size of a touch recognition area for selecting a graphic object in the display to correspond to a location of the corrected touch point. Elsewhere, there’s also a noise reduction filter.

As for the second touch input unit, it may also be “disposed at a steering wheel.” Here, the second input may include a touch correction mode and a pressure sensor, while touch sensitivity can be changed as well.

The touch device may be “applied” to a television, smartphone, laptop, navigation device, a tablet and a vehicle operation system. So guys, are you interested to see touch-sensitive controls on a steering wheel, or would buttons suffice? Share your thoughts with us.

I prefer buttons cos you can feel them and they click or make a sound when pressed. So you never need to look at the Steering while driving.

Stop playing all those things on steering wheel, these will only disturb on driving and focus more on driving, most important is the pure drive with steering wheel, we are driving a car not school bus!!

Umm but a school bus with 50 young lives being transported needs more concentration than driving a car.

Maybe the kids who grew up in their baby strollers with a touchscreen in front of them might differ, but I really cannot or never will be used to not having a simple button to press to change a song or turn up the aircon. Swipe a touchscreen to do everything? No.

Or maybe they just haven’t designed anything good yet. The aftermarket ones in ALL Malaysian-assembled cars are just pure crap, illegible in sunshine, slow, China fonts and designs, cheap ugly Android, ughh. Unbelievable that people would pay RM3-4k extra to the Toyota and Honda and Proton/Perodua dealers to install that crap.

As much as I liked to Koreans, I think they should stop imitating Apple. Touch sensitive, touch screen etc are all technology available for masses and should not be patented.
