The Toyota 86 Shooting Brake concept has been unveiled in Sydney by Tetsuya Tada, global chief engineer of the Toyota 86. The prototype was designed and developed by Toyota Australia’s Product Design team and hand-built in Japan under the direction of Toyota’s global sports car division.
Before its physical conception, it is said that Toyota Australia’s design chief Nicolas Hogios and his Australian design team went through a debate on the design changes that should be made to the coupe. The outcome of that debate saw the remodelling of just the rear quarter and roof.
“The silhouette is still sporty, taut and energetic, but it’s more practical as it allows the roof to be used to carry surfboards, bikes or storage pods for a weekend away while the larger opening of the new boot enables much easier loading,” Hogios said. To add to that, the Shooting Brake concept offers more headroom for rear passengers as well.
Chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada was surprised and immediately taken in, the minute he saw the one-quarter scale clay model during a visit to Australia in 2014. “I liked it so much I arranged for my expert takumi prototype craftsmen to hand-build the Shooting Brake concept based on the Australian design,” Tada said.
“The concept car is a fully functional, driveable vehicle that has been put through its paces on Toyota test tracks. The nicely weighted and direct steering of the 86 ensures the car retains the involving drive experience of the coupe with a slightly more neutral feel in tight corners on a driver’s favourite road,” the engineer highlighted.
According to Toyota Australia’s divisional manager of national marketing Brad Cramb, the concept is a “classy option” for active couples or families who want “something different” as their second car. That said, there are currently no plans for production yet as Toyota is looking to gauge reaction for the concept.
“While we never say never, and I would love this concept to become a production reality, it is very much a concept that demonstrates the passion within Toyota for cars that are fun to drive,” Tada concluded. So guys, it’s time to share your comments because Toyota wants your reaction. Should the Toyota 86 Shooting Brake be made?
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Takumi Fujiwara approves.
Hahahahaha … GT86 + CT200H
Since they fail to sell more of the car. They aim to sell more of the chassis. Good biz strategy for dummy consumers
When Toyota 86 goes to bed with Honda CR-Z…
please. stop. just no.
If this design gets a more usable rear seats, than perhaps.
More practical, more room for passenger, why not? make it please! And I can live with it everyday!

Oh yeah!
Don’t talk about Shooting Brake. The normal Toyota 86 in Australia is AUD$29k. Here, it is over RM200k.
For the pondans who always say foreign markets are bigger that is why price can be kept low, Australia has 30 million population. Malaysia has 30 million population. Thus, there is no logic that price is cheaper overseas because got bigger market share.
My buddy works as washing plates in a Chinese restaurant in Sydney. He bought a Toyota 86 outright, with no loan.
Aussie had a indigenous car industry that came out with icons like the Utes, Ford Falcon & Holden Commodores. But thanks to pipu like u, who have selfish & self-serving short term policies, these icons r now extinct. Aussie cars scene are now much poorer w/o those ponies.
looks like a bad photoshop..
oh yeah…this is classy from toyota…
Rear back look stupid ugly..
Tofu business will be profitable again
some resemblance of Ferrari FF…
Love the shape, wonder how many trays of tofu can fit in that now.
Reminds me of the ugly Ferrari FF. But this one isn’t too bad actually, compared to that Ferrari. I like how they say this version will provide a more neutral feel. So that means the coupe is the drift machine, while this is a neutral handling version of it – ie not for drifting, but for enjoying your favorite B roads.
Why not? Good for my tofu business hehehe
Awesome. Looks great.
Shooting brake is quite a niche, rarely manufacturers end up producing them. But it’s probably the most loved body type among list of promising concepts manufacturers end up decide not to mass produce.
i m just not artistic enuf to appreciate the design. seeing all the Japanese names in the article, i am expecting some wow factors but…
by the way, under the hood is the Subaru boxer engine.
Can it beat my Gen 2 without VSC?
beat your brains with ur Gen2 before you shoot silly comments all over the place
Brace yourself because the new season of Initial D may come out with this car as a main car of takumi fujiwara
