Volvo S60 T6 Drive-E launched – 306 hp, CKD, RM280k

2016 Volvo S60 T6 Drive-E 1

Volvo Car Malaysia today officially introduced the new Volvo S60 T6, which now adopts the company’s in-house-developed Drive-E petrol engine. The new mill replaces the previous pair of Ford-related GTDi motors (T4 and T5) for the S60 in Malaysia.

Straight to the most important bit then, the engine. The T6 Drive-E is a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine that benefits from turbocharging and supercharging (at low revs). As a result, the engine outputs 306 hp at 5,700 rpm, and 400 Nm at 2,100 to 4,800 rpm. Mighty numbers indeed.

An Aisin-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission handles power delivery to the front wheels here, complete with steering-mounted paddle shifters. Performance-wise, you’re looking at a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.9 seconds, and a top speed of 230 km/h.

Visually, the car looks nearly identical to the S60 facelift that made its local debut in March 2015, inside and out. This new variant sports 17-inch ‘Sadia’ alloy wheels, wrapped with 235/45R17 tyres. The black car seen here is fitted with optional 18-inch ‘Ixion’ wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, and R-Design rear diffuser with hexagonal pipes.

Safety concerns is well catered to with City Safety autonomous braking system (works at speeds up to 50 km/h,) radar-operated Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) and Collision Warning with Full Auto Braking. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Aid (LKA), Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection, as well as Road Sign Information (RSI) are also fitted.

The introduction of the new Volvo S60 T6 Drive-E means the previous S60 offerings – the T4 and T5 will no longer be offered to customers. The T4 and T5 were priced at RM221,888 and RM268,888, respectively (on-the-road without insurance).

The latest Volvo addition meanwhile, is priced at RM280,888. The price is on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, and five years’ free Volvo On Call roadside assist.

This tempting price point is the result of localisation. Yes, this 306 hp Volvo is a locally-assembled (CKD) product from Swedish Motor Assemblies in Shah Alam, which has been active since 1967.

Nice. But 400NM to the front wheels might overwhelm them a bit? Just don’t turn wheel and WOT at same time.

For daily driving, base-spec 316i 136hp is more than sufficient.

    HNNNGGGHHH

That rim at launch is Ixion, usually part of optional R-design kits, looks good.

john said Volvo price like misilis and BMW, no it’s not. This T6 cheaper than 330i and C300, yet way more powerful. It’s better value than German cars.

    • CKD oso this price is definitely not in VW range. In actual fact, Volvo is scandi VW. But now become white on the outside, yellow on the inside.

Of course not, Volvo is more atas than German Proton.

Jelly Volvo get plenty of tongsan money lettew. Meanwhile, VW no money, have to recall their extra “clean” diesel powertrain huehuehue

Another limited edition car selling here at those prices, A6 1.8 would be a better overall choice at 280K

  • I dont understand. 328i pulls 245hp and 350Nm and still do a century sprint at 5.9sec, this Geely looks mighty on paper but it just got same sprinting time..anyone can enlighten me on this?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
    • Hithere on May 19, 2016 at 7:48 am

Because the century sprint depends not just on power and torque. Wheel spin, gearbox, gear ratios, weight etc. all come in to play.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1
  • Simpleton on May 19, 2016 at 10:05 am

The answer is very simple. It is to do with gearbox system and ratio which is optimize for the century sprint.
You will see the differences when you compare the rolling start and the sprint from 60-100 and 80-160.

Also Volvo’s are notoriously known to be very heavy due to the strong materials used in their safety cage. Check the weights!
