Proton Suprima Active Concept crossover unveiled

Proton_Suprima_Active-2

Remember the Proton Iriz Active Concept, the raised-up, grey and orange design study shown back in 2014? Now, we have the Proton Suprima Active Concept, with a similar styling execution. The car has been unveiled at the ongoing My Auto Fest. The done-up Iriz is also on display next to it.

The C-segment hatchback receives a full crossover-style bodykit, complete with all-around body cladding. Orange appears prominently on the gloss grey Suprima Active (instead of the Iriz Active’s matte grey), with the bright shade highlighting the front grille, headlamp projector rings, front intake outline, roof, wing mirrors, side skirts and rear garnish.

As in the Iriz Active, this new concept has a raised ride height to accentuate the crossover look, increasing the ground clearance from the standard 155 mm to 207 mm. Interestingly, there’s mention of a six-speed manual transmission option for the Active, aside from the regular CVT.

The car sits on 17-inch turbine wheels, also with orange highlights. Also on, silver “roof rails” (purely cosmetic) and matte grey stickers, which complete the Active’s exterior makeover.

On the inside, beige, rather than orange highlights, can be found. Tan leather is featured on the steering wheel grips, door card inserts and the reupholstered seats. Orange, meanwhile, can be seen on the air-con vents and the centre console buttons surrounds.

Proton says the pair of Active concepts “signifies a potential entry into the growing crossover market, with specialised re-engineering to satisfy customers who want a higher driving positon, improved ride and handling and lifestyle options.” So, what do you think of this, folks?

this is what proton car crossover? you can get tonnes of body kits in Sunway and get new tyres and rims and make better car than this ugly thing.. is this what proton comes up with RM1.5B????? your bosses have lots of explanations to people after you are gone bust. I have seen Suprima cars on the road with much better looking aftermarket work. what are you thinking proton???????

6 speed MT and 7 speed AT also can get after market.. 4WD or AWD also can be modified after market with huge cost.. ‘Dad’ already told if you earn 1.5b, not spend it all and save the big portion for the future..

Yeah all can get aftermarket, as p1 basher said like airbags VSC TC. All can be installed later

If the manual transmission is really on, it should be a pretty decent drive. Sad to say that the proton’s CVT is really hopeless. I suppose that they chose Punch CVT to keep overall cost down but when this affects drivability and ruins the power train experience, you are not going to sell many cars or be able to put out a product that competes effectively and this is the major problem for proton together with the after sales and service.

    1. Proton is trying to make Suprima chassis from loosing more money. This is to gain market share from Subaru XV segment. Revive whole design package might helps.

    2. This concept have a few flaws by just looking at it’s exterior execution.

    3. Internal wise, Proton may not have an “active” engine that meets future requirement or “active” engineering (unless inject with Suzuki Jimny / Vitara DNA)

It looks very promising, Proton should consider putting this into production. This could be something like the Audi Allroad, Volvo V40 Cross Country or Nissan X-Gear… minus the 4WD of course, because that would demand an all-new drivetrain and lets face it, the hopeless Punch VT3+ CVT will be a huge liability off-road anyway… it will probably stall every few minutes. A normal stickshift will be far more useful… it will be easier to modulate power delivery. Also, the CamPro Turbo has some turbo-lag… it has 205Nm of torque, yes, but that’s only if the boost is active.

In shorter words, Proton can’t make the Suprima S a true off-roader, but they can certainly make it a ‘lifestyle’ or ‘urban’ off-roader… like most popular SUVs these days. The HR-V might look ganas a bit… but a Suzuki Jimny will decimate it off-road, any day of the week. haha

This thing is the same story with the Toyota Rush. Got no AWD powertrain but everyone gladly calls it an SUV because a spare wheel sticking on the rear tailgate. Proton please your concept is good but without any technical and mechanical changes it’s not practical enough to be called a concept crossover.
