It appears as if the massive worldwide Takata airbag recall has now entered the world of motorcycles, with Honda issuing recall #KA8 for GL1800 Gold Wings manufactured between 2006 and 2010. While Honda has not issued any numbers on the affected Gold Wing touring bikes, the Takata airbag recall has now affected 85 million vehicles globally.
The GL1800 Gold Wing is Honda’s flagship touring motorcycle, and was the first motorcycle with an airbag when introduced to the market in 2006. According to a news release carried on autoevolution the recall is caused by “propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.”
According to a Honda statement, owners of the affected motorcycles in the US have been notified, and a second notification will be sent when parts are available for the recall and rectification works can take place. In the meantime, several online Gold Wing forums have suggested disabling the GL1800’s airbag system.
Since Boon Siew Honda does not officially import the Honda GL1800 Gold Wing, every model of the big Honda tourer on Malaysian roads is a private or grey market import. Owners of such vehicles should immediately contact the importer of their Gold Wing, or check their VIN on the Honda powersports website.

!!! I didn’t even know motorcycles had airbags ! … I knew they had ABS and ESC, but I’ve never ever seen a motorcycle airbag until now. I’m guessing this is for ‘big’ bikes only ? hmm…
Ducati work with dainese introduce multistrada d-air with sensor in motorcycle activate airbag in suit. But 1 point motorcycle don’t have ESC. World is so big go walk around
The best airbags system for motorcycle is an all-round ballon which completely wraps the motorcyclist, up-down + left-right + front-back, when accident occurs.
The best protection for motorcycylist is: not to ride a motorcycle; buy a car.
Not only do big bikes like these touring gold wing have airbag, advance technologies have allowed airbags to be Incorporated into rider’s jacket and deploy in split second to protect the rider against serious injuries.
Bikes have no ESC? Many sports bikes have them, among them Kawasaki’s zx636, zx10R and gtr1400. It is known as KTRC, riders can choose 3 settings of traction and this technology has been available for some time.
Can you imagine, moto got VSC and ABS and our national car company, half their cars got no ABS and VSC.
Don’t talk about Perodua. Even Toyotas don’t have VSC and even the Camry costing RM160k also is missing VSC.
