Ford KA+ makes European debut – it’s the Figo

Ford has announced the introduction of the KA+ for Europe. If it looks a bit familiar, it is. The five-door hatch is new to the continent, but isn’t a completely new car; the sub-four metre vehicle is based on the Brazilian-designed Ka five-door hatch that’s available for that market. The car is also sold in India as the Figo.

Now, it’s making the journey to the Continent, where it will be marketed as an entry-level offering sitting under the Fiesta, with deliveries set to begin later in the year. It’s slightly shorter than the B299, but is taller (by 29 mm). Despite its compact dimensions, there’s plenty of practicality, with 270 litres of luggage space and 21 cubby holes located throught the cabin,

Only a single engine choice has been stated, a 1.2 litre Duratec Ti-VCT petrol mill derived from the 1.25 litre unit seen in the Fiesta, but this will be available in two output tunes (70 PS and 85 PS). Whatever the tune, the engine will be paired with a five-speed manual transmission as standard.

The automaker says that the car has been reworked to meet expectation of European buyers, most notably in areas of ride and handling. On the handling front, revisions have been made to the steering system, springs and dampers, front anti-roll bar, rear torsion beam axle and tyres, and the front sub-frame and engine mounts have also been re-engineered as well.

The European KA+ has also undergone a range of measures to minimise wind noise, road noise and powertrain noise levels to improve NVH levels and increase refinement.

Standard kit across the range includes power front windows/door mirrors and remote central locking, and in terms of safety all KA+ models feature six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) with Hill Start Assist

The 85 PS variant adds on manual air-conditioning, Ford SYNC and MyKey into the mix, and on its options list are electronic climate control, cruise control, a DAB audio system, leather steering wheel, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, power rear windows and heated/power folding door mirrors, privacy glass and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Hasn’t Ford learned from the EcoSport debacle? Europeans aren’t too much into models designed for third world markets, unless the price is really, really, REALLY low. Like Dacia. The Mirage doesn’t sell well either, AFAIK.
