Honda had previously announced a trio of NSX coupes that will partake in this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC). While we are already familiar with the look of its first two entrants – ‘Time Attack 1’ and ‘Time Attack 2’ – Honda has now released images of its third participant – an all-electric concept of the NSX.
Looking a tad bit different from the standard car, the NSX-inspired electric vehicle (EV) concept sprouts a massive rear wing at the back and a front chin spoiler to match. Other enhancements will likely include a weight-saving programme and a race-tuned chassis.
The more interesting bit here is the all-electric powertrain, which Honda describes as a four-motor Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. The powertrain was fitted on a CR-Z last year, and managed to snag a win in the PPIHC Exhibition class. This year, the powertrain produces three times the total system output of its predecessor, and is chucked into the NSX.
Honda will campaign the NSX EV in the Electric Modified Class for this year’s PPIHC, with Tetsuya Yamano tasked to lead the charge in the ‘The Race to the Clouds’. Yamano is well-versed with Honda’s SH-AWD powertrain, having piloted last year’s CR-Z prototype.
“We’ve been tuning the car for several weeks at Pikes and have advanced its performance significantly,” said Tetsuya Yamano. “We’re honoured to be running at Pikes in this historical, anniversary year – an event respected by racing fans all over the world.”
