Federal and state roads’ speed limit reduced for Raya

AppleMark

Hari Raya is just around the corner and the roads will be packed with families heading back to hometowns for the celebration. Sadly, the annual exodus also leads to many road accidents. In a bid to scare motorists into driving safely, the authorities will hold the nationwide Ops Bersepadu from June 29 to July 13, The Star reports.

During the period, speed limits on federal roads will be reduced from 90 km/h to 80 km/h while the maximum speed for state roads will be dropped to 70 km/h, according to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Liow, who was speaking to the media after launching a road safety campaign in conjunction with Hari Raya at the Sungai Besi toll plaza this morning, reminded motorists and passengers to buckle up, adhere to the speed limit and follow traffic rules to ensure a safe journey.

The minister also warned that driving on the emergency lane is an offence.

  • Speed limit will become a frustration when car drivers can only do 15-25kmh and many times 0kmh. Who needs a lower speed limit at that time.

My 9 year old son won’t be very happy with this. His wish since he was 4 months was to floor the Bugati Veyron and smoke everyone during the Raya rush. Looks like I need to sponsor his speeding ticket! #bayarzakat

  • Every year do the same thing. Do they really study cutting the speed can bring down the accident rate? If can,why not all speed set at 40km/h? Then sure no accident. If cannot, whats the point reducing speed from 90 to 80km/h,only to slow everyone down. Dont tell me common sense slow down sure no accident, such unprofessional reflexic act. Common sense tell me no difference if only 10km/h.Better tell dont use the car.

Wait what? Reduce the speed limit? They should increase the speed limit for cars to ensure that the road is smooth enough and not reducing it to cause more jams. WTF?

I think better station police booth every 10-20KM to catch offenders using emergency lane. When I returned from Ipoh during the school break holiday, many vehicles were using the emergency lane.

No use of speed limit of the people still wrecklessly drive fast plus the one that drives on the emergency lane. Malaysian mindset nowadays. Have license but don’t know how to use the road properly.

Speeding per se is not the most evil of all traffic violations. Sometimes people were caught speeding when what they were actually doing was following the traffic flow for smooth driving, with speed limit set at an unrealistically low figure.

If the authority is really sincere in reducing the accident rate, they should concentrate more on really unsafe driving behavior such as jumping queue, driving on the emergency lane as well as reckless driving. Also road hogs and rubberneckers should be penalized as well as these people also contributes to the high accident rate.

Speed doesn’t kills. Unsafe driving does.

  • Germany has no speed limit but far fewer accidents. Its not about the speed, its the behavior of the drivers. Malaysians are not attentive and take unnecessary risks. Many do not rest on long distances enough. Oh, and they all carry smartphones to play with while on long boring drives.

Sometimes speed is neccessary to overtake those overly slow drivers which actually can cause accidents ..they hog the fast/middle lanes…those who tailgating, chg lanes suddenly, speeding at corners seldom caught
