The PSA Group has published real-world fuel consumption figures for its cars across the Peugeot, Citroën, and DS brands, in light of the scandals involving automakers and their fuel consumption and emissions claims.

Based on the European Union’s Real Driving Emissions project, PSA’s procedures measured fuel consumption with a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) installed on the test vehicle.

The measurements were carried out on public roads open to traffic, made up of a 25 km urban segment, a 39 km rural segment and a 31 km motorway segment, in addition to real-world conditions including passenger and luggage loads, road gradients and the use of air-conditioning systems.

In November 2015, the PSA Group undertook real-world measurements for fuel consumption with two non-governmental organisations, Transport and Environment (T&E) and France Nature Environment (FNE). This initiative with an environmental partner and certification body is an industry first, the group says.


Audited by Bureau Veritas, the test procedure ensured that the resulting figures were scientifically robust, reproducible and representative of a typical driver, said the group. Looking at the figures, the “real-world” results were between 1.2 litres per 100 km (on the Peugeot 208 1.6 BlueHDi 100) and 2.7 litres per 100 km (on the Peugeot 3008 1.2 PureTech 130 S&S) higher than the standard NEDC-rated figures.

“As part of its drive to continuously provide customers with more information, the Group will publish figures for another 20 models by the end of the year and introduce a simulator allowing customers to reduce their fuel consumption depending on driving conditions, thereby lowering their CO2 emissions,” said executive vice president of research and development Gilles Le Borgne.

“In 2017, the PSA Group will move to the next level by extending measurements to pollutant emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in customer driving conditions.”
