Ops Selamat 9 – more accidents, less deaths this year

Karak-highway-01

There have been more accidents during this Raya period compared to last year, but fewer fatal ones so far. Eleven days into Ops Selamat 9/2016 and a total of 15,524 road accidents were recorded nationwide, an increase of 2.5% or 377 cases compared to the corresponding period last year, Bernama reports.

However, the number of fatal accidents has dropped by 38 cases or 15.8%. The total number of deaths due to road accidents after 11 days is down from 266 cases last year to 229 cases, 13.9% lower. Selangor recorded the highest number of accidents at 4,064 cases, followed by Johor (2,351), Kuala Lumpur (1,707), Perak (1,298) and Penang (1,146).

The stats were handed out by Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus, who was speaking to reporters after visiting and conducting traffic checks at the Bentong toll plaza yesterday.

Mahamad Akhir said the police would continue its enforcement and monitoring until the operations ended on July 13. “For instance, although the holiday is over and many people have returned to work, there are still people coming back to the Klang Valley. So, we will not reduce our manpower of 5,800 traffic policemen until the operations end,” he said.

The cop said that based on police observations, many motorists refrained from using the emergency lane, especially on highways, and the situation was better than last year. The number of summonses issued is down compared to last Raya.

  • Based on that statistics, it is still relatively high, as to compared to other high populated countries. The figure is still not helpful. Sticker enforcement of the law should have been done (Australia as an example). You don’t see people hooning a lot, even with bigger cars as to compared to Malaysia, even smaller cars likes to hoon. The system is just as bad as how the government is running the country.

what the difference less death, but accidents still high? Ini main number shj, make result beautiful shj. Enforcement need take action everyday to make sure road-user follow laws. Not to wait certain special big days, baru ambil tindakan or ops campaign.

  • More accidents because Malaysians are still reproducing and their road manners are still the same. Less deaths because more Malaysians are using safer imported cars
