McLaren’s latest version of its iconic P1 supercar is finally here! Arriving in topless guise and with an all-electric powertrain, the new model even comes with a central driving position just like the original McLaren F1. But, there’s a catch.
As McLaren points out in its official press release: “Meanwhile a pure EV (electric vehicle) based on today’s McLaren P1 is now available but only to a limited group of potential customers … those under the age of six. At least that’s the official guidance.”
That’s right, this P1 is strictly for the young ones but they will still get the pure “McLaren experience” like what the adults. In fact, they will have an upper hand over the grownups because they get to ride around in an open-top P1.
The newly-introduced model still retains the company’s signature dihedral doors, and six-year olds need not worry about its performance capabilities. From a standstill, the vehicle will hit its top speed in just two seconds, hitting 4.8 km/h.
Convenient features include a stop/start button that automatically activates the lights and “air-conditioning” unit, and an MP3 player pre-programmed with the best nursery rhymes. The vehicle also comes with a reverse gear within its three-speed transmission, useful “if you’ve arrived at the wrong playground.”
McLaren has also ensured that the “busy six year old” isn’t overwhelmed by its MSO personalisation programme, so rather than the usual policy of offering limitless colour and trim combinations, Volcano Yellow is the only colour choice.
The company also understands that young adults could feel a little jealous, but maintains that Ride On McLaren P1 drivers are ideally those between three and six years old. Nevertheless, it suggested that young drivers beyond this age group might also fit, so there’s hope.
In terms of pricing, the new P1 will be available from the end of October first from selected McLaren Automotive retailers around the world priced at £375.00 (RM 2011), followed by recognised global toy retailers. That makes it much more affordable than the petrol-powered car too. Interested?

Sadly Hammond is a Porsche man.
Looking at the headline, I thought Mclaren is going to produce a topless P1 to rival the LaFerrari Spyder. But realised there is indeed a catch after reading the whole article. Cheeky Mclaren!
There is a mclaren for all ages…..
Malaysia’s first “affordable” hyper car at RM2,011. I’m just afraid that with the “added” exorbitant excise duties and GST it may become “unaffordable” here.
Would like to know the ride and handling characteristics of this little beast in real world, real playground situation. Playgrounds that challenge the 6-year olds cornering dexterity and acceleration when coming out of a sharp corner would be advantageous and really highlight the car’s race track pedigree.
