Proton and Perodua win 5 ASEAN NCAP safety awards

At this year’s ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Awards, in conjunction with the Stop the Crash ASEAN 2016 event, national carmakers Proton and Perodua managed to bag a few awards for their respective vehicles.

Beginning with Proton, where the Iriz was awarded the “Most affordable 5-star ASEAN NCAP car in Malaysia,” whereas the Preve was named the “Most affordable 5-star ASEAN NCAP car in Thailand.” Both models come equipped with ESC as standard on all variants, and feature the hot press forming body structure.

Meanwhile, the new Proton Saga received the “Rising Star Award,” with the top-spec Premium 1.3L CVT variant possessing safety features such as ESC, ABS, EBD, traction control, brake assist, hill-hold assist, two airbags and Isofix (with top tether).

“We are truly humbled and very pleased with this recognition. It is a culmination of the tireless efforts by our team in Proton to give the best value to our customers. Proton takes the safety aspects of our customers very seriously and is honoured that our efforts in this area are recognized today,” said Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali, CEO of Proton.

Perodua also took home two awards for its Bezza, securing the “Best Child Occupant Protection (COP)” and “Best Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)” awards for the small family car category.

As a recap, the EEV-certified sedan and Perodua’s first-ever sedan managed to score a respectable 15.38 out of a possible 16 points in the AOP test, and an 85% compliance rating in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) test.

The Bezza comes in five variants, but only the top-of-the-range 1.3L Advance is equipped with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), traction control and brake assist.

If Iriz and Preve both had 5 stars, why did both cars fail big time? Something must be very fishy here. Usually a 5 star car will never fail.

Now Ertiga got 2 stars….how is PRoton going to survive??

The Japs must not treat Malaysia as their dumping ground. In Japan, all their cars compulsory got VSC. So, why do they sell the Ertiga in Malaysia without VSC?

Proton should be sued for not looking after the interest of the rakyat in Malaysia. PRoton should ask Suzuki to give VSC as standard. Aren’t the lives of Malaysians important Proton?

According to Gomen statistics, 45 percent of all accidents last year was related to stability control. That means if all cars had VSC, we can reduce 50% of the accidents and deaths in Malaysia.

Proton, aren’t you thinking about the safety of the rakyat of Malaysia and why did you not ask Suzuki to give the Ertiga VSC as required by Japanese laws for all their local Japan cars?

      • Childish comment. Ertiga is not new model car. No wonder got no such safety gadgets. And duh, why do you say it fails?

P2 has better sales bcoz it is cheaper not because it better. And better doesn’t necessarily get good sales.

Congrats, Proton ! It’s hard to believe that just 5 years ago, not a single Proton car came with ESC in Malaysia (please correct me if I’m mistaken). Heck, ABS was a luxury back then… and even the best models came with just 2 airbags (some came with just one).

And now, 5 years later, almost all new Proton models can be purchased with ESC (only the Ertiga misses out; as per Suzuki’s terms). Even more impressive is how ESC comes as standard in 3 out of 8 Proton models currently.

This is a huge jump forward for Proton. Their emphasis on ‘affordable safety’ has paid off, and I hope Proton will continue the trend by bringing next gen safety like autonomous braking, lane watch and more to the masses in the next 5 years. In time, the stigma of ‘milo tin’ will slowly fade away as more people become aware of Proton’s high safety standards at affordable prices.

As for Perodua, well, I guess it’s only fair to congratulate them as well… hopefully, this award will spur them to emphasise higher safety standards in the future.

    • Proton’s safety revolution started with the Preve introduced back in 2012, so you are correct about no Proton was equipped with ESC up to that point. If not because of Proton emphasizing on safety, I dare say that other carmakers won’t be rushing to equip their cars with ESC as well. Heck, if not for Proton, UMW won’t be equipping the 2016 Vios, Altis and Camry with ESC across the range.

What a delusion. UMW Toyota changes are due to heavy hitting from Honda. Those major mid-facelift debut from Toyota are from pressures. Otherwise facelift will be just changing bumper, rims and DRL position.

Or more correct situation would be Proton forces Perodua on safety. And Perodua forces Proton to up its quality.

Or in the end, the market results forces those car maker to change.

If you want VSC & at least 6 airbags across all Toyota models, just stop buying them until they do so. Otherwise they will just keep selling new cars with safety of 20yrs old car (e.g. AE110 have ABS and dual airbag).

If you want VSC in MyVi, stop buying them.
