In 1967, the late Carroll Shelby introduced the world to the Super Snake version of the Ford Mustang. Fifty years later, Shelby American is celebrating that occasion with this, the new Shelby Mustang 50th Anniversary Super Snake, which makes its debut during the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.
Only 500 units of the Super Snake will be built, all based on the 2017 Mustang (not that new one). As you’d expect, there’s plenty of performance enhancements done by Shelby to make sure it lives up to its heritage.
Under the hood, the 5.0 litre Coyote V8 has been supercharged to provide 670 hp, a significant gain from the stock engine’s 435 hp. For those who can do with more power, Shelby also offers an optional Whipple or Kenne Bell supercharger to provide over 750 hp.
In terms of performance, the Super Snake will accelerate from 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in just 3.5 seconds, and on the drag strip, will finish the quarter mile in only 10.9 seconds. Shelby also points out that its new creation is capable of generating up to 1.2 g on the skip pad thanks to exclusive dampers, sway bars, springs, bushings, 20-inch forged aluminium wheels and performance tyres.
Other improvements include Wilwood brakes (six-piston front; four-piston rear) with its own cooling system, an improved cooling system for the engine, Ford Performance half shafts, one-piece drive shaft and revised gearing.
Visually, the Mustang gets Shelby-engineered body components, including a new hood, grille, rockers, rocker splitters, front splitter, rear spoiler, rear tail panel, rear diffuser and lower rear splitter. The car also comes with unique light assemblies and the obligatory 50th anniversary badging and stripes.
The interior also follows a similar theme, with additional anniversary logo on the seats and floor mats, special door sill plates, a new gauge cluster by Autometer and serialised dash plaque. The Super Snake starts at USD69,995 (RM311,268), and each car is documented in the official Shelby Registry.
