2017 Honda Civic Hatchback teased for Thailand

2017 Honda Civic Hatchback teased for Thailand

It’s looking to be a busy year for Honda Thailand, as the company has now teased the arrival of the Honda Civic Hatchback with this image posted on its official Facebook page.

The teaser shows us the front of the car, which is differentiated from its sedan sibling with a revised front end that features a new bumper, larger “intakes” and revised fog lamps. The biggest change however, takes place at the back but isn’t shown in this instance.

Not that it is any mystery as the Civic Hatchback has already been revealed in full several months ago. The five-door hatchback’s rear is just as bold in appearance as the front, with equally large “outlets”, a tailgate spoiler and even twin exhaust pipes (as seen on European market models). The hatchback’s interior will be carried over from the sedan, with the same layout and switchgear.

Honda Thailand did not reveal any specifications of the Civic Hatchback, but it is expected to be powered by the same powertrain as the sedan. This includes the 1.8 i-VTEC and 1.5 VTEC Turbo petrol engines, which are mated to a CVT to drive the front wheels. The model, like the sedan, will be built in the Kingdom.

For those who are expecting Malaysia to be the next recipient of the Civic Hatchback, don’t hold your breath. Katsuto Hayashi, managing director and CEO of Honda Malaysia had previously stated that the company has no plans to do so, although with enough demand, that may change.

Honda’s hands are tied. Everything is controlled by MITI. They tell Honda what to bring in and what to price.

This makes no sense at all. Why would MITI stop Honda from selling a Civic with manual transmission??? Obviously, it depends on market demand, and unfortunately there is very little market demand for manual transmission cars in Malaysia.

I prefer the rims that are on the sedan version rather than that in the teaser photo. Highly unlikely this will ever come to Malaysia as a CKD. But as an import from Thailand, there could be a remote possibility. But it will cost as much as an Accord by then.

If we’re not getting the Hatchback here,at least give us more option by bringing in the RS spec!! I believe a lot of hardcore Honda boys (myself included) is waiting for that.

Mr Katsuto Hayashi-san, don’t bluff la. I know U will bring this H/B here la. Being a non-national top seller, I know U WILL bring this here & it will be using the same engine & transmission like the sedan. So stop teasing & start bring it here OK.

  • If bring here, shud be higher end spec. 6-spd manual, 1.5T upgrade tebo, Mugen parts, all round safety, etc. Just to differentiate with sedan, much like Lancer Sportsback was.
