The last time we saw spyshots of the Volvo XC40, they were of low resolution and very grainy, limiting the amount of detail. This time, our European spies have returned with much clearer images that give us a better look at Gothenburg’s upcoming compact SUV.

From the looks of it, the XC40 stays relatively faithful to the 40.1 concept shown last year, with trapezoidal headlights carrying Volvo’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights. The front grille also has a reverse rake similar to the show car, giving it a unique look that’s distinct from its larger 90 Series models (XC90, S90 and V90) and the new XC60. The clamshell bonnet has also been retained.

Meanwhile, the 40.1’s slim side cameras, flush-fitting front door handles and “hidden” rear handles have been replaced by larger door mirrors and more conventional door handles. The tall tail lights are reminiscent of the XC90 and V90, but have a more angular design.

Set to debut at the 2017 Auto Shanghai next month, the XC40 will be the first car built on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), developed in conjunction with parent company Geely. Engine choices will include Volvo’s existing Drive-E 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills, along with a new 1.5 litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

The latter will also be paired with an electric motor in the T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid model, with a total system output of around 250 PS and 400 Nm. A fully-electric version is set to follow in 2020 at the earliest, with an expected range of 350 km.

Volvo’s smallest XC model isn’t reaching the market until 2018, according to former R&D boss Peter Mertens; when it does, however, it’s expected to significantly boost the Swedish automaker’s sales volume, which is reliant on SUV sales. Set to rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the BMW X1, the XC40 is expected to retail at a starting price of €30,000 (RM143,200).

Just a few years ago, Volvo was near to bankruptcy. Cause nobody wanted to buy “old fashioned” Volvo cars.

But the Swedish Government and Volvo Swedish Management and Directors all had brains. They allowed their car company to be bought by Geely. They were humble and had humility.

Geely being cash rich, injected USD$12 billion (RM55 billion) cash into Volvo to revive the company.

5 years later now, Volvo is doing so well. The demands for their cars are super duper high. Their XC90 T8 even won countless awards as the Best Car of 2015, 2016 and 2017. XC60 and XC40 also going to wipe out the whole SUV market.

Time for Proton to think carefully which is more important. Getting a new lease of life OR being arrogant and burdening the rakyat with “free” loans.

They’re not capable to think of that. They let slip the greatest opportunity they ever had.

That says it all. They never cared about making better cars that we want and willing to buy.

They only care their pockets are filled. Proton is not a business. It’s their cash cow, it becoming success or not is irrelevant. If success, pockets are filled. If not, just beg for “soft loan” from taxpayers.

Anything that threatens their pockets is relevant.

As is, Volvo XC60 is still best seller SUV in Europe, and best seller model of entire Volvo range.

Many love the new XC60, there’s every reason to believe as you said, it will wipe the floor everyone else’s SUV in its class.

See, Proton is that incompetent. They don’t know the trend now is towards SUV, hence why Honda HR-V is such a big hit.

Volvo, the master of making SUV, can offer a hand through their parent’s will, but Proton wanted to protect their pockets more than anything.

Ha ha ha. Not only that the Volvo have the distinctive Headlight “Thor’s Hammer” LED/DRL, this XC-40 will be making its debut at the 2017 Auto Shanghai Motor Show.

Imagine what can happen if Geely make a P1 SUV that look like this. Please don’t wake me up from my dream.

This is how you camo the car while testing. Not by putting over a tarp like Honda Malaysia did on the new CRV, so slipshod and dangerous too.

  • Why need to partnership with copycat Geely when my awesome P1 can stand alone make awesome cars? You know our Persona is the most loved car by our graduates right? If not enough, just ask more money from the Gov and Rakyat to supply lah
