What do we have here? The Range Rover Velar and the new Land Rover Discovery have appeared on the website of Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia, beefing up the local distributor’s (online) SUV range. The all-new Velar made its debut at last month’s Geneva show and the fifth-gen Disco was unveiled in September last year, so the SUVs are being teased rather soon.
Well, JLR Malaysia has a habit of putting up new models online as soon as they’re unveiled globally, like how they did with the Jaguar F-Pace when it first surfaced (eventually launched locally a year after), so we probably shouldn’t read too much into it at this juncture. Still, it’s good to know that the intention to bring in both new models is there, and that they’ll eventually reach our market.
The Disco is a full seven-seat SUV (as opposed to 5+2) sporting a new look that’s a big departure from past cars. It retains the signature stepped roofline, the stadium seating configuration and the asymmetrical rear design, but looks like a modern Land Rover/Range Rover in the mould of the Evoque. Go-anywhere ability is also a Discovery strength, and Solihull says that the new one – despite its polished appearance – is still in a class of its own off the tarmac.
The Range Rover Velar, seen this morning in a stomach-churning green and a widebody kit, is the more desirable machine here, if not the most desirable Range Rover on sale. The all-new design-led model fills in the gap between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. It’s a “new type of Range Rover for a new type of customer,” with the words “glamour” and “elegance” used liberally.
Road-biased by the brand’s standards, the Velar is all about style. The “visually reductive approach” and attention to detail is stunning, and results in a strikingly clean design that’s also very bold. That “reduction” approach is even clearer inside, with switches being kept to an absolute minimum – two 10-inch touchscreens integrated seamlessly behind “secret-until-lit” surfaces for the centre console. Spectacular.
Both the new Disco and the RR Velar will be great additions to the local luxury SUV scene. One carries traditional Land Rover values while the other appeals to moneyed new customers looking to stand out. We’re predicting a late 2017 or early 2018 local debut for the Discovery, and the Velar to eventually reach our shores after that.

Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Junk of a car. In the UK Range Rover is the No 1 most breakdowns according to top warranty provider, Warranty Direct. Silly to buy a junk that breaksdown so often.
Better buy a Volvo XC90 for RM390k or a BMW X5 hybrid for RM388k. Both cars far far far cheaper than this kaki breakdown junk. And Sime Darby service stinks….we know that from Ford 3 month wait for parts.
Range Rover would probably be 6 months wait.
The reason why people buy range rovers is simply because they are range rovers. Period hahaha
Not because of reliability or value…just because it’s that charismatic brit car that never seem to age
A prestige car with character.
1 million ringgit for a junkyard?
If Audi people claim as Glorified VW.. Why this people did not call Range Rover as Glorified TATA… Hee hee
It all depends. The people who call Lexus a glorified Toyota dislike Jepunis.
The people who call a Range Rover a glorified Tata dislike Brits/Indian.
Most of them dislike bcos they basically dislike anything & everything they don’t own. Just ask john if U want any confirmation. Hehehe. Cheers…
FYI my 2011 Disco 4 has ticked over 175,000km without a single problem (other than front suspension bush replacement but that was after hitting a massive pothole one night which actually broke the alloy wheel of another car that also hit it)- Im happy with that as far as reliability goes…
I have tried the XC90 and X5 but neither ride as serenely, go as many places, or tow as much as the Disco
Right you are……
But the Volvo and BMW are pretty much as terrible in reliability. Land Cruiser is pretty much the only reliable usable SUV.
Anyone who could afford the velar would be insane not to buy it.
That Sabah water guy had a few Range rovers
implying that the majority of range rover owners are corrupt cronies linked to the gov
I-Say-Man. Don’t la like that. U should say – Anyone who LIKE a Land Rover should OWN one. Hehehe.
All the vehicles look the same…even discovery nameplate…since they wanted to create another sub brand why not separate range rover and discovery into two distinctive designs…each has its own identity…
I can’t be the one who’s digging the Discover 4 with the beefy and chunky look. Especially the ones with covered spare tire at the back.
I like the Discovery design since it’s third generation, no doubt the Discovery 4 looks sexy af. The new 5, imo, is a bit too rounded up for a Discovery. The asymmetrical rear of the 3 and 4 also looks better than the 5.
Lets not kid our-self that the Disco or even the new Velar will sell in large numbers in M’sia. People who buy a LR/RR are guys who have Deep pocket.
The New Velar is slot above the Evoque & that will make it nearer to 500 grand. With that kind of $$$, the guy who buy the Disco or Velar is simply telling us that he does not care too hoot about $$$.
All he care is where/when is he going to play golf or an important meeting so that he will drive the car to park beside the other common BMW or Mercedes.
When a Guy drive a LR/RR, he is making a STATEMENT that he is willing to write off the whole amount in 5 years while the others who drive the BMW or Mercedes will think of how much he needs to top up when he change to a new model in 5 years.
In short, the LR/RR is telling the others that he Has ARRIVED while the others are only Arriving. Hehehe. Just an Opinion. Nothing cynical, just being clinical. Cheers…
No wonder its getting easier for public servants to own one
bravo mikey!!!
you are indeed the Man!!!!
Sorry kalimanjaro, may i ask that 3(!!!) exclamation mark. Is it a sign of WARNING or Compliment ?!
Simply stunning car. The interior and exterior is just perfect. Just that most Malaysians can’t afford it. Expect it to be around 450k-600k mark.
soon coming…Range Rover Verydulan cos my evoque hari hari masuk workshop
Wow the buyers (not many I’ve seen) of the updated Disco the last few years are going to be angry. Never liked the Disco anyhow for MY. The cost to run RR is high and entry point also high but residual value softens the blow at trade time.
