Kia Stinger displayed at distributor meet in Malaysia

There’s been a lot of hype surrounding the Kia Stinger in Malaysia lately, and whether or not it will officially go on sale here. Well, get ready to be excited again as the rear-wheel drive sports sedan was recently put on display during Kia’s 2017 Asia Distributors Convention event in Sabah.

These photos were posted on the official Instagram accounts of Kia Malaysia as well as SM Nasarudin, executive chairman of Naza Group of Companies. The red Stinger seen here appears to be the high-spec GT variant, which should be packing a 3.3 litre Lambda II twin-turbo V6 engine with 365 hp and 510 Nm of torque. The most powerful Stinger variant will complete the zero to 100 km/h sprint in just 4.9 seconds.

Other engine options include a 2.0 litre Theta II turbo four-cylinder petrol unit (255 hp and 353 Nm) and a 2.2 litre CRDi turbo four-cylinder diesel (197 hp and 440 Nm), the latter for the European market. All are paired with an eight-speed auto transmission from the K9.

Of course, the appearance of the Stinger in Malaysia doesn’t equate to a definite launch, so keep that in mind. However, Naza Kia Malaysia chief operating officer, Datuk Samson Anand George, revealed back in February it was confident that it would be able to bring in the Stinger “soon.” We’re keeping our fingers crossed for this one.

Comfortable GT cruiser with 4.9secs 0-100kmh for under 250k? Sounds plausible if it comes with all the bells n whistles but Malaysian mentality equates that its insane to spend quarter a million on a KIA.

I loike! It looks like Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
Definitely more exciting than those Japanese and German turbocharged four cylinder engine. Problem is non-car people will think it is a RM75k new Kia Forte. Buy the car and take out the Kia logo.

See how the Koreans have progressed. Once upon a time, Kia and hyundai were known as pariah brands. If you drove a Hyundai or a Kia, people would laugh at you.

Look at them today. Totally transformed. Hyundai and Kia sell about 8 million cars per annum. And in US and Australia, they are now TOP No 1 brands.

Hyundai just started 10 years before Proton started. And yet, one sells 10 million cars worldwide and the other sells 70,000 cars locally only.

We need to work hard like the Koreans. Bravo to the Stinger!

All of the above does not mean anything if Kia and hyundai cars is not selling at even 20% of what honda and toyota is selling. Where shall we start inorder to explain the contradicting suituation, or shall we say, their contradicting fortune Malaysia?.

Yes, its only a KIA, but this particular KIA is the mother of all KIA. This is a proper car, aimed specifically at enthusiasts. It will challenge the BMW 4-Coupe, Audi-S5 & Merc C-43.

With a top model packing a 360bhp V6, a 5.1sec 0-62mph sprint time & a 160mph top speed, this Stinger will sit just below Europe’s most hardcore saloons, such as the BMW M3/4, Audi RS-4 & Mercedes-AMG C63, but not by much.

A decade ago kia was pretty much a lemon but now it is at least at par with other top manufacturer if not better. A real motorhead always look for whats under the hood rather than just the name like most shallow wannabes.

  • Hmm if that is high spec 3.3V6 variant. I’m disappointed caused head lamps not full LED (only projector for high & low beam) & 18 inch alloy rims (rims looking nice but look smaller unlike other countries will get 19 inch rims).

    • Buddy.

I remember one key note that has served many people well over the years. If you have nothing better to say, usually it is better to say nothing.

Anyway, since this is a car blog, goodness gracious Stinger. Price it right and i’m sure you will move some out the showroom. Don’t be too ambitious. It will be hard to position this car in the market. If they priced it at about 200k, it will be too close to the established German Sports Sedan. So it has to be lower than that. I’m thinking if it drives well, you will find buyer in the 130-140k range for the 2.0. The 3.3V6 can be the premium product but please bring it in. Even if it does not sell well due to roadtax and high import tax, it will be your halo model.

You have the power to rattle the market like you did with Kia Forte back in 2010-2011, C segment car-B segment price. Don’t waste it. Most automatic mainstream cars below 200k in Malaysia are rather underpowered. Civic Turbo was an exception and it is selling quite well i think. Mk6 Golf Tsi sold very well at first too.

      • They still can’t beat Proton’s price.

B segment selling for A segment price
C segment selling for B segment price
D segment selling for C segment price

According to ur logik, Proton can dominate the market

I think it will be difficult to convince average Malaysians to fork out circa 3.5k roadtax p.a on a KIA. And those rich enough to afford 3.5k RT would probably not looking at KIA.
