Mazda has announced that it has started production of its second-generation CX-5 at its Hofu Plant No. 2 in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The assembly at Hofu joins the current production of the C-segment crossover in Hiroshima, which began in November last year. Both the Hofu and Hiroshima plants also produce the CX-3.
The company says the additional production will enable it to meet the growing global demand for the vehicle. It’s also part of an expansion in volume for the automaker as it works to meet a global sales volume target of 1.65 million units by the end of its Structural Reform Stage 2 three-year business plan that was launched the last fiscal year.
The CX-5 is also assembled in China and Malaysia, the latter at Mazda Malaysia’s line at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah, with production currently for local consumption as well as export to Thailand, though there are plans to ramp things up and expand exports to Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar.
Officially introduced in Malaysia last week, the CX-5 is available in five variant forms (two diesel, three petrol) for the local market, priced from RM134k to RM175k.
