The all-new G20 BMW 3 Series has been spotted out in the open yet again, with our spies capturing two test mules roaming around the streets of Munich. Both cars are still wearing quite a substantial amount of camouflage on them, but it isn’t straining to spot the cues.
At first glance, the new 3er appears to mimic the larger G30 5 Series, with wider kidney grilles and LED headlamps at the front. As before, different styling packages will be made available, and both appear to be represented here.
The car wearing the ‘3532’ plate is likely fitted with the M Sport package, as identified by the dynamic-looking front and rear bumpers. Meanwhile, the ‘3489’ car features a more reserved look by comparison, with less gaping intakes and sizeable exhaust cutouts.
Other details on show are the new L-shaped taillights, first seen on the G02 X4, which are comparatively smaller than those on the current F30. You’ll also notice a more streamlined and tapered bootlid, wider rear wheelarches, as well as a less pronounced Hofmeister kink at the C-pillars.
No interior photos were included in these set of photos, but based on previous spyshots, the 3 Series will receive a significant upgrade to its cabin. A digital instrument cluster (also seen in the upcoming G11/G12 7 Series facelift), new steering wheel design, large infotainment display, latest iDrive system and a revised dashboard layout are elements to help further elevate the sedan’s premium status.
Underpinning the new 3 Series will be BMW’s modular Cluster Architecture (CLAR), which is already being used in the 5 Series and 7 Series. The usual mix of petrol and diesel engines will be made available, along with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The facelifted W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and B9 Audi A4 are the obvious models the new 3 Series will have to contend with, but which one do you prefer?
