Malaysian vehicle sales data for June 2018 by brand – Toyota +466%, Lexus +3,166%, Volkswagen +677%

Vehicle sales figures shot through the roof last month compared to that in May, when the government announced that the goods and services tax (GST) rate would be set at 0% until the return of SST, resulting in customers holding back on purchases for the rest of that month.

With consumers taking advantage of the ‘tax holiday’ as well as Hari Raya festive season promotional campaigns and offers, a total of 64,502 units were registered last month, up 50% from the 42,983 units managed in May. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said the sales mark for the month was the second highest monthly TIV ever in local automotive history.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how most brands performed in June. As the chart shows, every passenger car player – with the exception of market leader Perodua, which registered a -10.8% drop – had a green arrow last month.

As mentioned, positive growth for every company, including Honda (+41.9%), Proton (+50.9%) and Nissan (+47.6%), but in some cases the percentage increase was quite staggering, as shown by gains made by Volkswagen (+676.8%) and Renault (+1,100%).

Other brands that did very well in a month of sterling sales included Toyota (+466.5%), Mazda (+145.8%), Mitsubishi (+380.6%), Subaru (+436.8%) and Hyundai (+258.7%).

Toyota’s performance meant that it outsold Honda last month (11,482 units to 11,418), but it still has a way to go before it can catch up in overall numbers – in terms of year-to-date figures, it’s at 31,709 units to Honda’s 51,354 units.

Sales of premium vehicles also increased – there’s really nothing better than paying less tax, and it doesn’t matter which part of the spectrum you’re in. Mercedes (+141.2%) and BMW (155.6%) continued on their merry way, but other brands had plenty to smile about.

Porsche (+477.8%) and Audi (+483.3%) vehicle sales went from single-digit to double-digits last month, and Volvo (+625.9%) sold six times the number of cars it did in May. The largest percentage gain in the premium segment was managed by Lexus (+3,166.7%), sales moving from six units in May to nearly 200 units last month.

On the commercial side , it is only Hilux and the body van that sells which is more than Vios. If Toyota commercial sales is down HABISLAH. Toyota.

The people had spoken the facts . It is not Toyota is good quality but still worried over New Takata air bags danger and issue again still.

Proton may have power window problem of the past but that had been rectified nowadays which is still safer with no issue air bags unlike all Japanese cars using and fixing with TAkata air bags.

Toyota is never the trusted brand when it comes to telling the truth.

Huge congrats to UMW Toyota on their spectacular sales last month. I cannot recall the last time UMWT surpassed Honda Malaysia’s monthly sales. Or when UMWT cracked the 10,000 monthly sales mark.

Special congrats to Bermaz Mazda, VPCM Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz Malaysia too. Most of the other companies also did reasonably well.

Unlike the rest, Perodua’s sales didn’t surge because they have limited stock for certain models, especially the new Myvi. But unlike certain companies, Perodua will not rush production and compromise quality control in favour of short term sales. Perodua is in it for the long-term. Unfortunately, that could mean a 3 or 4 month waiting list for new buyers. But as they say, good things come to those who wait.

      • If that was the case, given the best chance to buy a car in Malaysia history, all Toyota stocks would have been cleared in June, and YTD total would surpass Honda’s. Lexus’s would surpass Mers/BMW, etc.
Why don’t you call both Perodua and Honda SA now, check if they still have stock of popular models before the tax holiday ends?
By the way, these two brands do not offer commercial vehicles like Toyota does.

Everybody buys Perodua because it uses a Toyota engine inside. It is a trusted brand.

Between Daihatsu Terious (Perodua SUV) VS Geely Boyue……which do you think Malaysians trust more?

      1) Toyota is sold in over 200 countries worldwide so Perodua is safe here.
      2) Geely is sold mainly in China. Hardly sold anywhere in the world

Why should Ahmad Maslan apologize? A quick search of PT articles after GST was implemented did show a decrease in car prices. So in essence he was correct.

This increase is because you remove taxes but didn’t replace it. Psychologically people will buy now to beat the SST introduction. Just you watch when SST is introduced, the sales number will drop again.

Price dropped yet sales also dropped. Check TIV since 2015, it keeps dropping thanks to GST, people focus their resources elsewhere.

And don’t “but perodua, honda, merc, bmw pecah sales record”, yes they did, yet overall TIV still dropped. So the few who still buy are more conservative and stick to those brands only, the rest fell of the cliff.

Btw, price drop thanks to GST was a scam. Toyota even raised their price! Perodua meanwhile showed recently that if they sell rm60k car during GST, it will cost rm62k if SST. Yet I checked on 1 April 2015, the cloaest to such scenario was Alza 1.5 Adv which only dropped price by rm95 lel.

So perodua saved rm2k going SST to GST, pocketed rm1.9k into their pocket, then mudah puas hati people syukur harga turun less than rm100 lel.

Car price may increase during SST, but I’d expect sales will pick up from before tax holiday started. Since SST is narrow scope, people’s cost of living will not increase, or even drop as businesses replenish stocks, now cheaper with no GST, it will take time to adjust. As SST collects rm20bil less than GST, that’s rm20bil being circulated in the market for the people. So even if car price will get a bit pricier, people have more money and can spend more.

It’s quite easy. Those that top the sales chart monthly wouldn’t have much leftovers. Those that were struggling earlier can thank PH for reducing gst to 0%. If you’re going to save 6~10K, you’ll have much more choice, even going for cold brands like VW, Renault, Mazda or Koreans that have unsold older stocks.
