Peugeot 508 plug-in hybrid arriving next year – report

The radically revamped Peugeot 508 will be available as a plug-in hybrid version in 2019, according to a report by Autocar UK. First revealed back in February, the sedan debuted with conventional petrol and diesel internal combustion engines only.

The 508 PHEV is said to employ a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine that boasts mild hybrid capability thanks to an integrated starter-generator motor. The mill, which is claimed to provide about 200 PS, will drive the front wheels with the help of an eight-speed automatic, and help recharge a lithium-ion battery located beneath the boot floor.

Said battery juices up another electric motor driving the rear axle for an additional 100 PS, and is good for an all-electric driving range of about 50 km. This “dual propulsion” approach is similar to what Volvo does with its “Twin Engine” setup, although the Swedish carmaker places its batteries in the transmission tunnel instead.

The only trade-off here is the spare wheel has to make way to accommodate the battery, but a company insider told the publication that there will be no impact on boot space or cabin practicality. This is because the decision to place the battery under the boot floor was already made during development of the EMP2 platform on which the latest 508 rides on.

Other models that use the EMP2 platform include the DS 7 Crossback, which is said to be the first Peugeot model to receive the plug-in hybrid powertrain as the E-Tense. The 3008 and 5008, both also EMP2-based, are said to be other recipients as well.
