Subaru releases WRX STI 209 teaser, Detroit debut

The Subaru WRX STI S209 is set to debut in a week’s time at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, and official teasers are up. JDM watchers would be thinking that Detroit is a strange place for Subaru to wheel out the latest S20X special, and they’re right, but this time it’s different.

Usually a nice limited edition the Japanese keep for themselves, the upcoming S209 breaks with tradition and will be officially available in the US market. Hence “The S209. From Japan with Love.”

“All Subaru Tecnica International S-models share two traits in common: They have always represented the sum total of knowledge learned from Subaru motorsports and vehicle development, and they have never been available in the US,” Subaru says.

“This January in Detroit, that last part will change. You can be among the first to see the most powerful, best handling, and most exciting STI model ever created when we stream live from the 2019 NAIAS,” it added.

The previous S-model, the WRX STI S208, made its debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. It came with a an EJ20 2.0 litre turbo flat-four packing 329 PS and 432 Nm of torque from 3,200 to 4,800 rpm. Drive went to all wheels (of course) via a six-speed manual gearbox.

The S208’s NBR Challenge Package included front and rear spoiler lips, black 19-inch BBS alloys and side skirts. There was also a carbon-fibre roof and rear wing, the latter with ‘S208’ on the endplates.
