SPYSHOTS: Geely Binyue B-segment SUV spotted testing in Malaysia – new Proton X50 on the way?

SPYSHOTS: Geely Binyue B-segment SUV spotted testing in Malaysia – new Proton X50 on the way?

Proton is set to expand its newly established SUV portfolio to include a new B-segment compact SUV based on the Geely Binyue (SX11), which many are tentatively calling the X50. Recently, camouflaged examples of the Binyue have been spotted in the country, as seen in these photos posted by The Ajerul Facebook page.

The vehicles seen here are all left-hand drive units, and are likely used for development purposes similar to what we’ve witnessed with the X70 prior to its debut.

According to the source, standard and “sports” versions of the Binyue are being tested; the latter is identified by its bumper design that features smaller fog lamp enclosures, quad exhausts and a prominent rear wing.

SPYSHOTS: Geely Binyue B-segment SUV spotted testing in Malaysia – new Proton X50 on the way?

If the X70 is any indication, the Binyue should get its fair share of personalised revisions in terms of design and equipment to better suit the local market before it goes on sale. However, just when that will take place, what it will actually be called, and more importantly, for how much, remains a mystery only Proton can answer.

The national carmaker is in the midst of upgrading its Tanjung Malim facility to cater to the manufacturing process of its X70, as well as next-generation Proton models, which should include the Binyue-based model. As the Binyue rides on Geely’s B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA), it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to assume Proton’s RM1.2 billion investment will include support for building the platform. Whether this extends to include the CMA used by Lynk & Co models is still unknown.

In China, the Binyue is available with a choice of two turbocharged, direct-injection three-cylinder petrol engines. The first is a Geely and Volvo co-developed 1.5 litre unit (174 hp and 255 Nm) paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, while the second option is a 1.0 litre unit (134 hp and 205 Nm) available only with a six-speed manual transmission.

SPYSHOTS: Geely Binyue B-segment SUV spotted testing in Malaysia – new Proton X50 on the way?

Available equipment for the Binyue in China includes Level 2 autonomous driving features (adaptive cruise control, parking assist), GKUI system, autonomous emergency braking, seven-inch LCD instrument panel and 10.25-inch main display, among others. Prices range from 78,800 yuan (RM47,858) to 118,800 yuan (RM71,151) there.

As a recap, the national carmaker has already secured the use of intellectual properties (IP) and the rights to manufacture and sell three Geely models – the Boyue, Binyue and Jiaji (VF11).

There goes our Proton cars. Our Proton did not know how China and Geely operated when they signed the merger.

Now, Geely will kill all Proton models completely. There goes 35 years of motoring history for Proton.

We now become just a rebadger and official distributor for Geely cars.

And all money we Malaysians spend, will make Geely China richer!

After September, Proton only gets 50.1% profits.

For now, all 15,000 orders – all profits go to China

Proton has such a big workforce of 10,000 people. But for 20 years they only produce 50,000 cars per year

Mitsubishi in Thailand only got 6000 workers, but they produce 320,000 per annum

So what did our Malaysian workers do past few years? Why never design and create our own car?

Is there a reason why they never review China cars?

They even review obscure cars like Seat from Spain etc. But never China cars.

I guess all UK and US auto magazines know they have dubious quality

By the way, Proton where is our Proton Iriz EV? You showcased the EV 6 years ago and asked gomen for more money to do more research on the car. Billions were given. Where is this Malaysian car?

Aruz is still a Japanese Toyota car. Toyota engines are sold in 200 countries. The engines are highly recognised in all first world countries and won so many awards in those countries.

Geely engines are 95% sold only in China. Geely tried to sell their engines in other countries. All First world countries rejected the engines completely due to low quality.

So that is the difference between Aruz and Geely

blame that only UMW. A Government GLC who never negotiated with Toyota for a good deal.

Even Honda also, another GLC, failed to negotiate with Honda Japan for a good deal ie more airbags and more safety spec.

Until 2 years ago, all our cars had no VSC and only 2 airbags. Even our Top Camry had only 2 airbags and no VSC until 2 years ago.

Whose fault? It is the lembap Government GLC who never negotiated a better deal for the rakyat of Malaysia.

they allowed the Japanese to give us under spec cars whilst all over the world, the same cars were sold with 9 airbags and VSC.

I like your engine. Wipe out Exora, Perdana, Saga, Preve, Persona and Iriz. Get all model from Geely and uses turbo engine. Because Malaysian really looking forward for turbo engine which is reliable (Geely and Volco joint tech). After that owner will install blow off, all car will have pssssszzzz pssssszzz sound during changing gear.

I would ever image I would say this. This looks good if they do slap a Proton badge on this beauty. I don’t care where it made nor if its own by who. I’m looking for quality and good product.

i think their cars are pretty reliable. the x70 for example.. has been on sale since 2016 in China as the boyue.. its still on sale today, and selling well with over 600,000 on the road today.. the chinese market consumer is well known as super complainers and are very very tough customers.. plus.. they are also huge social media users.. im sure if geely models, or the boyue have major problems.. there is no way anyone can hide the news.

Yesterday, I popped into my local car dealer in the UK. They used to sell Protons in the past. I said they may want to look at the new Proton X70. Hopefully, the Proton plant will be fully utilized one day. I know that the previous Protons were not homologated to UK standard.

Price range must be between Perodua Aruz(7seater) and Haval H4(5seater) if really want attract people to buy it. if not, make it 7 seater and give same price as Perodua Aruz.

    • Gud vendors stayed with P1 and took up Geelys challenge. Kroni ones just transfer over to Bapak new baby, PeroTiga with their overpriced parts.

    • Those vendors are fat cats with 30 years of easy money going into their pockets by supplying sub standard parts. About time they do business like the rest of the world by producing quality products, instead of relying to ‘connections’.

The reliability of this car and the X70 is a big question mark still. Too early to judge their cars.

Smart buyer will get the C-HR. A stylish car with good TNGA platform, proven reliability of the dual VVT-i engine and good RV.
