Honda Malaysia (HM) has reached yet another milestone; this time, it’s 10,000 units of locally assembled hybrid models. Hybrid CKD number 10,000 – a Honda City Hybrid – was delivered yesterday to Saddam Hassan Bin Abdul Salim at Macinda Auto in Kuantan.
Honda’s hybrid story in Malaysia started in 2004, when HM brought in the Civic Hybrid, the first hybrid car to be sold here. That, and the Insight and CR-Z that followed, were CBU imports from Japan. In 2012, the GE Jazz Hybrid became the first CKD hybrid to roll out of Honda’s Pegoh plant. HM’s Melaka factory was the first to produce hybrid cars in Malaysia, and we were the third country after Japan and the United States to manufacture a Honda hybrid car.
Of the 10k CKD hybrids sold here, it’s no surprise that the Jazz Hybrid is the biggest contributor with over 6,000 units, followed by the City Hybrid with over 3,400 units delivered. HM’s latest hybrid addition – the HR-V Hybrid – has found over 670 homes as of June 2019.

Malaysia is the only country outside of Japan to officially offer the Sport Hybrid i-DCD system, which powers the hybrid Jazz, City and HR-V. It combines an Atkinson-cycle 1.5 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine with a 30 PS/160 Nm electric motor, a lithium-ion traction battery pack and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. As the lucky owner of the 10k milestone car, Saddam received the Protection Package, which includes Ultra Body Coating, Ultra Window Coating and wheel lock nuts. He was also given a free Modulo package by HM.

Too bad the majority of hybrids sold were during tax incentives era up to middle of last year. Hybrid sales for Honda & other brands have been rapidly dropping ever since the Government retracted the hybrid CKD assembly incentives.

Many patriotic Malaysians are not interested in Honda’s EV or Hybrids. We are waiting for the Iriz EV. 6 years now we have been waiting!
