Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet – two petrol variants

The Volkswagen T-Roc has now gone topless in T-Roc Cabriolet guise, almost two years after the debut of the MQB platform-based crossover. Slotting in beneath the Tiguan as with the conventional T-Roc, the T-Roc Cabriolet will be on display at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show happening next month.

Measuring 4,268 mm long with a 2,630 mm wheelbase, 1,811 mm wide and 1,522 mm tall, this makes the T-Roc Cabriolet 34 mm longer with a 27 mm longer wheelbase, 8 mm narrower and 51 mm lower than the five-door T-Roc, and employs a fabric soft-top that can be fully opened in nine seconds and at speed of up to 30 km/h; this is fully automated with no additional manual intervention required, says Volkswagen.

The T-Roc Cabriolet’s front seats are mounted at 599 mm above the road surface with the rear seats at 616 mm, 27 mm higher and 2 mm lower than in the standard T-Roc, respectively, and comes with a 284-litre luggage compartment and an optional towing bracket.

Pop-up roll-over protection has been designed into the T-Roc Cabriolet, which deploys from behind the rear head rests within fractions of a second when the vehicle detects is has exceeded a pre-determined limit of tilt or lateral acceleration. This is complemented by added structural reinforcements applied to the underbody, side panels, cross members and doors.

There will be two exterior trim packages to choose from – Style and R-Line. Both options give the buyer the choice of either 17-inch or 19-inch wheels. The Style pack offers four different decor options and optional leather packages in two colours, while the sportier R-Line pack brings sports seats with integrated head restraints, and upholstery in a fabric/leatherette combination.

Inside, the T-Roc Cabriolet features a dashboard that is essentially identical to that of the fixed-roof SUV, where a Composition infotainment setup is standard, and the optional 11.7-inch Active Info Display is paired to a eight-inch infotainment touchscreen for a setup Volkswagen calls the Digital Cockpit.

The German automaker’s MIB3 infotainment system with online connectivity is also optionally available, featuring an integrated eSIM for permanent data connection that is activated as soon as the vehicle is registered in the Volkswagen network.

Powertrain for the T-Roc Cabriolet is comprised of a choice of two petrol engines, a 115 PS/200 Nm 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine or a 150 PS/250 Nm 1.5 litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Both drive the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. while the 1.5 litre four-pot can be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The five-door T-Roc is offered with three petrols and three diesels.

In terms of active safety, both variants of the T-Roc Cabriolet come with Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System and pedestrian detection, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and the Lane Assist System.

The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet is set to make its market debut in the first half of next year; further details such as performance fuel consumption and emissions will likely be known by then. The soft-top crossover will be made at Volkswagen’s Osnabrück plant, where the Beetle and Golf cabriolets were also produced.

No chance of seeing it coming here. The TROC isn’t even here yet with no rumours either but would be cool to bring in a few units for people who want them.
