GALLERY: 2020 Honda City 1.0L Turbo RS in Thailand

To say that the 2020 Honda City has garnered much fanfare would be quite understating it, seeing as it was one of the hottest launch stories of 2019, at least as non-national models go. Its closest rival for the time being would be the 2020 Nissan Almera, a completely revamped B-segment sedan that also comes with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

Just to recap, the City Turbo RS is powered by a 1.0 litre (998 cc) VTEC Turbo engine, delivering a healthy 122 PS at 5,500 rpm and 173 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm. It’s front-wheel drive only, and in Thailand a CVT gearbox with seven virtual speeds is the only transmission on offer.

The suspension setup remains the same as before, with MacPherson struts being used at the front, while a torsion beam is found in the rear axle. The same applies to the brake system, with ventilated discs up front, while drums are used for the rear.

Dimensions-wise, the new City is 113 mm longer (4,553 mm) and 53 mm wider (1,748 mm) than its predecessor, but gets a 10 mm decrease in height (1,467 mm) and a wheelbase that is 11 mm shorter (2,589 mm). Despite the shorter wheelbase, there’s actually more leg room and knee clearance, thanks to the reprofiled rear seats.

The car’s design remains a subjective topic, but most of us writers seem to find it visually appealing, though perhaps not quite as sleek as the Almera. Honda says NVH has been improved, thanks to polyurethane spray foam insulation and a thicker engine under cover insulator.

The cabin features an entirely new dashboard design, with slight hints of the new Jazz (not such a bad thing, really). There’s an off-centred infotainment display, vertical-style air vents, new steering wheel design with a smaller centre boss, as well as a generally tidier cockpit that’s more pleasant to the eyes.

Further down the centre console is where it starts feel somewhat similar, although there are now additional buttons beside the gear lever for enabling or disabling the car’s Econ mode and engine idling function.

Things get a little less rosy on the safety side of things. For one, there’s no autonomous emergency braking (AEB), but Thai rules mandate the fitment of ABS, EBD, BA and VSA as standard, so all variants sold in the Kingdom will get those at the very least.

The 2020 Honda City is currently being test driven by the Thai media in Chiang Rai, where this batch of photos were taken. Prices for the B-segment sedan starts from 579,500 baht (RM77,534), with four variants – S, V, SV and RS – offered to customers there. Anyone still excited for this?

Finish Honda Malaysia and their arrogant salesmen. This upcoming City Turbo cost RM73K but without AEB, land departure warning and blind spot monitor. Alamak!!!!!! Nobody will touch this brand. Salesman will start crying. So called as “Power of Nightmare Cars”

As majority in Malaysia fed up of driving honda cars because too many quality issues on newer Honda models after bought for less than 1 year. When go to aftersales service, people also complaining most of the aftersales service dealer. Cannot solve. Shows that technicians are having half past six, lying, didn’t repair at all, never repair other peoples car at all.

Yet, some of them are still buying Honda cars with brainless. Also, come here hating kimchi cars with low resale value and hating mazda. Just look at safety specs, most of Honda models are really kosong spec. Compare to Mazda, Toyota and Hyundai Ioniq comes with blind spot monitor, AEB, land departure warning and others. No wonder, many mazda CX-5 and Proton X70 everywhere than looking Honda CRV is now rare.

Malaysians rather buy mazda. This comes with 5 years warranty as Honda. Bermaz service is better and they already improved their service than honda. Even CKD Mazda CX-5 looks so so but better than most Honda models. So Honda Malaysia is dead.

The best engines and cars are always launched in Thailand.

they scared to launch 1.0 in Malaysia because tax would be less and they will have to sell the City for RM50k

This is best way for DRB, the lazy GLC to perah money from Malaysians by selling the 1.5

    • Message to Jealous Honda Salesman on Jan 29, 2020 at 8:03 pm

I hope Honda salesman will know about many defects about Honda especially service quality before badmouthing about Mazda.

Why people buy CX5 instead of CRV? Because they are smart. They know that CRV quality is rubbish including other Honda models. Even when they also have to go to service center for many times by replacing many parts, at the end of the day nothing can be resolved.

Just compare to Mazda, why owners are now satisfying for continuing driving CX5 than last year. Because they have already improve their Bermaz management had lots of major improvements by checking quality control and service quality.

Moreover, even bermaz management gives lots of safety features to most of Mazda models for both CKD and CBU. Unlike DRB Honda sell performance car without AEB, land departure warning and etc.

That’s why Mazda are really successful than Honda. Even right now, Nissan, Toyota and Proton are doing much better than Honda too. Plus, BMW and Mercedes Benz service can also do it better than Honda too.

So, I hope you understand. And please lah to all Honda salesmen, don’t comment and said that Mazda pricing is very high and forcing people to buy Honda.

If the Almera comes here with AEB, there is no comparison.

It is a big mistake Honda is making for not having AEB at least as an option for the higher trims of the City. They will have to wait for another model change if not a facelift before having it available. It is a missed opportunity.

  • Safety Comes First! on Jan 29, 2020 at 3:00 pm

If some think about the performance, I don’t think performance is very important. Even many also said as well. You all should know why?

Malaysian wants a car with more safety features instead of buying Honda that doesn’t have no advanced safety features. It is because by having more safety features in your car like AEB, it makes you more safer and more comfort, even though you drive fast.

Obviously in Malaysia, some of them said that some Honda has lack of advanced safety features but giving more performance. This all causes that many people causes accidents on the road? Probably could see Honda cars stopping on highway/road during the accident. Moreover, this also could causes injuries to the drivers and passengers in the car. Yet, Some Malaysians are so brainless of buying Honda with no advanced safety features

So anyway, that’s the reason why the safety is very very important to all of you before you buy cars.

Before 2014 Toyota would not provide VSC for any of its Vios model. Then comes Honda City which provide VSA in their E model and above. By 2017 Toyota sales had dipped badly while Honda sales soar. Now Toyota had upgrade all Vios model with VSC and other model with much much more like dashcam, panorama camera etc etc. What if Honda quickly respond with better spec for Honda City?. What if Honda make available 1.2 litre turbo for Honda City V spec. 1.0litre turbo for E spec and current normal 1.5 i-vtec for S spec?.

How about no? The design isn’t refreshing or unique as the current gen FL gets the Civic-winged look ady. The front really apes the Civic FC but w/o the squat, muscular stance. The top half apes the Civic FB and placing the wing mirrors at the doors has no function as the A-pillars doesn’t have viewing glass unlike Civic FD and Jazz GK. And did I see the new Saga in the rear? They look so alike. Interior-wise is old school central stacking unlike the more driver focus dashboard of current City, worse it screams cheap. Take a look at the A/C controls with the obviously LHD biased controls; On-Off button to the left?! WTF! And another feature they copied new Saga is the exposed USB ports. On a Saga this is excusable that its cheap but not on a car costing you double.

That seemed obvious and people should accept that it’s the truth. Many drivers are conscious about their engine and other cars` engine. That’s why when a 1.6 Iriz driver sees a 1.0 Axia driver speeding beside him, he will instantly think my engine is bigger so I should be faster. So he smoked the Axia. Now with this car being merely 1.0 but with a turbo, don’t be surprised if I think that I’m faster than a bullet train. lol

Disappointing features on safety and design, looks the same as current version and the dashboard infotainment looks a bit odd. The engine is probably the better aspect, as it should be economical. Almera design is more modern in my opinion. But City is strong brand in Malaysia, i think it will still sell.

If City Turbo comes to Malaysia, two things will guaranteed to happened:

    1) Super price hike.
    2) The car will be “K” spec, meaning “Kosong”

The bonus is “poor service and repair”, when you send your car to the dealers.

    Nightmare or Dream? You decide.
