Naza to Sell Rebranded Peugeot 206

Naza signed an agreement with French automobile company Peugeot S.A. yesterday (29/6/2005) for the rights to assemble and distribute the Peugeot 206 model in Malaysia and possibly South-east Asia.

Update: Naza has launched the Naza 206 Bestari. Click here for an in-depth coverage.

The Peugeot 206

Production is expected to begin in early 2006 at Naza’s plant up north in Gurun.

The car will be relabelled as a Naza. Will it be called Naza 206, or will it have a Malay name like the Ria and Citra?

Cycle and Carriage Automobiles has been appointed to provide the after-sales support.

Currently Nasim Sdn. Bhd., a company under the Naza group is one of the dealers and sole importer of Peugeot cars in Malaysia is. Nasim Sdn. Bhd. distributes the Peugeot 206 1.4 and 1.6 16v models.

Is Mahaleel going to bitch about more money flowing out of Malaysia? Possibly as a countermeasure to any potential bitching, the spokesperson has quoted “possible export to South-east Asia”.

This translates into more money for Naza tycoon Nasimuddin Amin. Is Nasimuddin trying to establish as many alternative income channels as possible before he loses his priviledges as the AP King?

Oh, and Rafidah Aziz says she has no connections to him, I repeat, Radifah Aziz says she has no connections to him! :P

  • At least SOMEONE is trying to do something and give better cars to the Malaysian public. In this day and age, rebadging isn't a big deal. Look at the Daewoo Nubira/Lacetti. It's also sold as Chevrolet Lacetti/Optra, Suzuki Forenza, Buick Excelle, Holden Viva. So many identities for the same car.

As long as Tan Sri Nasimuddin can give the Malaysian public what they want, and can afford … I'm all for it. Don't forget he started out as a used car salesman, and car salesmen pretty much are in touch with what people want (good stuff, affordable price). Also, being a family controlled business isn't a bad thing. At least you won't find mini emperors building little empires within. They usually won't tolerate dirtbags skimming off their earnings.

End result in certain huge companies – RM80 for an oil filter on a RM65k car?? To put things into perspective even an imported Japanese blue filter is RM22. An exotic K&N white body, or green Mugen one RM90~100.

"Is Mahaleel going to bitch about more money flowing out of Malaysia?"

”The cars will have local component content of 40%,” Nasimuddin said, adding that Naza was considering sourcing the balance of the parts from China, among other countries.

Translates: 60% components from China and other countries, guess who's raking in the cash from Malaysian consumers?

Are you trying to say Peugeot parts come from China? At the end of the day Malaysian consumers buy the best product, best features, best price. Everyone who sells anything is making money so what's new?

I totally agree with what K&N have to say.Rebadging is not a bad idea after all since it can at least provide our local car market with more varieties rather than just P1 or P2. Even though it is an old Peugeot model, as long as it looks good and looks even better on our pockets, why not? I would seriously considering in getting the car if it is really within anything from 60-70K. The sportivo version looks really good to resist. The only question that remains is reliability which is one of the most important aspect of a car. 20++ years of lead time and 'they' still cannot get the smallest of problems right.

Hmmm… macam ni senanglah nak buat keta. x payah buat prototype. ambik sebijik design mana-mana keta yg suka. beli mould dari pengeluar asal. pasang kat malaysia. tuko logo aje lah. jadiklah. kalo aku beli naza 206 ni aku tukor logo dia je… jadikkan peugeot balik. tipah tertipu le jadinye. :)
