Chery A520

Visionary Vehicles has brought in Chery’s first sedan for the US market - the Chery A520. The Chery A520 is part of the Chery A5 series, with the number 20 indicating a 2.0 liter engine. It is said that it’s based on an extended Volkswagen Golf Mk3 platform, something like an older Seat Toledo.

The 2.0 liter 4-cylinder ACTECO engine is Chery’s own engine, developed for them by an Austrian firm called AVL. Bodyworks have been designed by Italian design firm Bertone. Bertone is the design firm responsible for nearly all of Lamborghini’s designs, including the latest Miura concept.

Visionary Vehicles positions the Chery A520 sedan against the BMW 3-series and the Audi A4, although it is more realistic for it to go against the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata. It has a price tag of USD$19,000.

I don’t think Bertone specifically design this car for Chery. They probably took it out from their archive or design library. It looks old. They probably design it back in 1974. Hehehe…

The rear is a copy of the Ford Mondeo… hehe… The interior looks surprisingly nice. But how’s the quality? Made-in-China plastic? :P

interior looks surprisingly better than all toyotas we had here! i’m sure the quality is better than potong. At least chinese makers knew where were they heading and what they wanted too. Proton is still daring to change….. hahaha

This new Chery may look like a cross between the rear of a toyota crown comfort (hkg taxi) and a chevy front face but i think i have to give credit to the interior dash appearance- it looks very professionally done. As to Chery’s marketing gig, i strongly suggest to Wuhu Chery Industrial to start applying for international trademark of IPO’s as someday, they will come up with a design other high-end automakers would copy. They should not position or mention themselves as competitors of BMW or Audi but instead, set the pace in its own class because the factors that make chery cars cheaper than well-established cars are the name and the level of profit required by the manufacturer. Why do you think would make Mercedes Benz/Maclaren compete in the F1 if not for the prestige but isn’t it the V and A class are made in Spain while the C and E classes are made in S.Africa instead of Zindelfigen or Stuttgard?
