Honda to develop Honda Fit Hybrid?

honda_fit_blue_red.jpg

Rumours are that Honda is developing a hybrid version of it’s Honda Fit (Honda Jazz on our shores) for worldwide release as early as Q2 2008. It is intended to be the first budget hybrid, priced at less than USD$ 12,000. The cheapest hybrid around so far costs US$ 16,840. This rumour was reported by Nihon Keizai, one of the big financial dailies in Japan.

Honda spokespeople neither confirmed nor denied this rumour, but remarked that Honda had the technological ability to mount it’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system onto most of it’s vehicles, including the Honda Fit. The report by Nihon Keizai says Honda is developing a new 1.0 liter engine to twin with an electric motor for the Honda Fit’s Integrated Motor Assist system.

Now this is a hybrid that would really sell, unlike that ugly thing of a car we call the Prius. One question still puzzles me, will cars like this work well in other parts in the world like Germany??

Considering alot of people there use the autobahn, the electrical motor in the car would be rendered useless as it switches to the petrol motor when travelling at higher speeds. What should be concentrated on if enviromentalists were to become even more persistent is the development of the purely electric run motor.

Hybrids are mostly used in city environment, and it’s the best it stays there… Autobahn? i guess it’d be rare to see a 1.0 car on it even if this hybrid Aria is not introduced there…

Diesels are more suited to long range driving. Hybrids is best for city driving. Whatever you dreaming these are not for us common people in malaysia here.

Dreaming for a economy small diesel kereta in malaysia here…
