Volvo XC90 PUV V8 Concept

The Volvo XC90 PUV was a concept introduced back in 2004 at the Paris International Auto Show to showcase it’s newly launched V8 engine. Volvo’s 4.4 liter V8 engine was developed to go against BMW’s X5 4.4 liter V8 engine, BMW’s upmarket high trim luxury SUV. It is a normally aspirated engine making 331 horsepower at 5850rpm and 325Nm of torque at 3900rpm. However this Volvo XC90 PUV concept has a slightly tweaked version under the hood. Let’s have a look.

The Volvo XC90 PUV has a supercharged version of the 4.4 liter V8, designed to make a ridiculous 650 horsepower channeled through a modified Volvo Haldex all-wheel drive. The V8 is a 60 degree V8, narrower than the normal 90 degree designs for V8 engines. Both block and cylinder head are cast in aluminium.

Let’s talk about differences other than the engine. The Volvo XC90 PUV is 2 inches closer to the ground than the standard Volvo XC90. Tyres are massive 275/40-ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero Assimetrico rubber wrapped around nice 20″ wheels. The bodykit is fabricated by Aria Group, based in South California. The Volvo XC90 PUV has a new front bumper featuring a big air dam so that the V8’s supercharger’s intercooler can get sufficient airflow. Intercoolers are always sexy.

Brakes are 15 inch discs with 8-piston calipers at the front and 13 inch discs with 4 piston calipers at the back.

Paul, if Im not mistaken, Volvo America did this machine back in 2004, is it? Along with the S40 Evolution as their attempt to capture the younger market. What happen to these Volvos anyway? Did they ever make it to production? Or is it just available from private custom garage? Nevertheless, the specification are quite yummy….I believe they could give BMW and Mercedes a run for their money. =)
