Volvo Multi-Fuel V70 Car

Volvo’s Multi-Fuel is basically a Volvo V70 equipped with a prototype 2.0 liter 5-cylinder turbo-charged engine that can accept five different fuels - hythane, biomethane, natural gas, bioethanol E85 and petrol. It was introduced at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum 2006, and achieves high performance on any of the 5 fuels.

The engine runs best on hythane, a blend of 10% hydrogen and 90% methane. Bioethanol E85 is a blend of 85% bioethanol and 15% petrol. It makes 200 horsepower and takes the Volvo Multi-Fuel V70 from 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds.
The Volvo Multi-Fuel V70 has one large tank and two smaller tanks for a total of 98 liters of gaseous fuels (hythane, biomethane, and natural gas), as well as a 29-liter tank for liquid fuels like bioethanol E85 and petrol. The small gaseous tanks are made of steel while the large tank is made of a gas tight aluminium liner reinforced with high performance carbon fibre composite and an exterior layer of hardened fibre-glass composite. They are stored below the luggage compartment floor. To switch between types of fuels, the driver simply needs to press a button.

Seems complicated design there, but it really saves lots of petrol. Wondering when will it be popular in the future. hv to go energy station to fill in 3 tanks before it can run though… there’s still room for improvement. bravo for Volvo.

Proton should consider making some bi-fuel first, just add in a NGV tank, its not that hard. Can make some PR feel good demo too.
Ok heres some details of the fuels:
- Hythene: means hydrogen methane, is hydrogen gas mixed with natural gas(methane), the purpose of mixing them is to improve flammability of the gas fuel becoz hydrogen burns faster.
- biomethane: or known as biogas, one of the waste product of organic matters decaying without the present of oxygen. This is a green fuel that made of waste material.
- natural gas: you can get this at petronas NGV pump.
- E85: 85% ethanol mixed with 15% petrol, the ethanol can be made of jagung, tebu, ubi kayu, etc, it is renewable and cleaner then petrol. The 15% petrol is for easy cold starting.
- petrol: dinosaur died 100s millions years ago and buried deed underground, they are too fat and their fat and body become the raw material to make petrol…

the last time i read an article about using hydrogen as a fuel had this “minor” prob.. in a bad car crash they become mini bombs…. and considering malaysians are wana be f1 drivers i can imagine hearing explosions from my apartment

What wrong with you guys? Is there no stop of this anti-proton runs? I guess some do not know what soil that we’ve been staying on and origins, in your IC its stated “Malaysian” unless your illegals.
Take it easy on the comparing with proton, how do you expect to change when you dont give a chance for our country to at least try to upgrade slowly? But when we manage to have a breakthrough in technology, everybody shuts up. Its very easy to complain, but its very tough to give compliments.

Whats wrong with you? Looking at others people product easily we will think about “can we make this too?” “do we have anything come close to this?”, and as a Malaysian, what else we could though of? Perodua? Will a british or aussy will immediately talk proton built quality when they looking at a BMW/Volvo/Merc? LOL
We are just asking proton to improve quality, is that so hard to listen to us?
I open restaurant, food not delicious, friends will warn me, this not fresh that not cook, strangers will just walk away and tell 100 more strangers that my food sucks. But if I am so stuborn and refuse to listen to my friends, I am soon close shop.

Ohh i left out something in the petrol definition:
- petrol: dinosaur died 100s millions years ago and buried deed underground, they are too fat and their fat and body become the raw material to make petrol. If they are depleted, we will have to wait for another 100millions years to pump from paul’s grave yard that looks like a petrol station. So dont waste petrol.

Not really using pure hydrogen la, in hythene, hydrogen is like an addictive to improve flamability. So the car is no different then NGV, maybe a bit more powerful or a bit save fuel coz you dont have to inject so much hythene to enable burning.
Mini bomb? Not really, if the gas tank leaked, the hydrogen+methane gas will escape to high ground immediately due to that it is lighter then air. Unlike petrol, which will pool on the road surface and if theres a spark, you will see a big fire. Also, the high pressure gas cylinders is many times much more stronger then petrol fuel tank.
