Hyundai Concept Genesis - D-segment competitor

These are sketches of Hyundai’s Concept Genesis, a D-segment vehicle that will make it’s public debut at the New York International Auto Show this year. Rumours are that the Concept Genesis will eventually graduate as a production model Hyundai i50, also code-named Hyundai Equus. The Equus is supposedly Hyundai’s first rear wheel drive platform car. This might be the successor to the Hyundai Sonata, and with rear wheel drive, it should please the Americans and Australians.
A little bit about Hyundai’s new model naming scheme. Hyundai seems to have emulated BMW’s number scheme somewhat, with the Hyundai i30 being in the same segment as the 3-series which is the C-segment, while this new i50 will be similiar in size to the 5-series, a D-segment car. Following this trend, we might see a future large Hyundai called the i70?
One more rear view sketch after the jump.

Now you said HYUNDAI copies….so and so design, copy someone shape and that, I believed in the near future EVERYBODY will say WOW! TOYOTA, LEXUS, HONDA…….VW…. COPYING Hyundai and Kia design.
Don’t play play YO, HYUNDAI & KIA designers were came from AUDI groups and European now. They admitted that, Korean Designer concept is not well accepted by the WORLD market.
I am not kidding you. Let’s see how!
Sigh!

Hi all, I ‘m new member to joint in this forum. Nice to meet u all.
By look at the sketches, I really like the design.
But I’m not agree that the design were copied from others different car.
Have to know that copy different car design, then combine it and finally have to modify the overall design to make sure all designs were tally to each other is a quite tough job rather than design the all new appearance.

As like what I said a number of times, where got pure ‘originality’ in car design nowadays? Hundreds of sketches and concepts are unveiled each year, and as time goes by, there will not be a pure original car design. Of course when a new car comes out, people would refer its design to some other cars.

The front really looks like the Aussie Camry but should be targetting a higher odels like Lexus GS or Toyota Crown. This is still a concept sketch, might take a year or 2 to materialise.
When will it come to Malaysia? maybe add another 3-5 years. We can’t even get the new Santa Fe which is already selling in Singapore and Brunei.

whats the big deal la.. everyone copies everyone to a certain extent. design is not re-inventing the wheel.. its using elements that are already in existence in the right combination to meet the demands of your target audience at that particular time.
a good example is SEAT, they all look like alfa romeos, coz the chief designer de silva was from alfa and is now heading design at audi, and lamborghini as well.

yeah, like camry wor the front!
March 14, 2007 @ 10:41 am
it looks good! bear in mind these are just sketches… i am sure the final car will have adjustments and by then it might not look like a camry front, lexus rear. one day the Koreans are going to be frontrunners in the automotive world! just look at how fast their electronic gadgets have conquered the world. now, if only Proton would attempt half of what the Koreans are doing… instead of giving us their half hearted ‘facelifts’ on their old tired models.

Copy copy copy, sienlah these koreans
March 14, 2007 @ 12:14 pm

March 14, 2007 @ 2:02 pm

March 14, 2007 @ 2:23 pm
those buggers never hav an original design , becoming like those chinse makers…
March 14, 2007 @ 2:24 pm
ok !this car reminds me of a lexus back, merc sides, toyota front…but simply fabulous!!!u know the designers always put in big a** wheels!
March 14, 2007 @ 2:28 pm
and from the back it’s obviously an aston DB8.
March 14, 2007 @ 4:39 pm
batter stick to one original design theme, all hunday stick to that theme,
just cant understand it??
and change that stupid italic H (honda wannabe) to a new logo,
March 14, 2007 @ 4:59 pm
Front of a Camry, side profile of a Lexus GS, and the rear of a Lexus IS. I guess the Koreans are good at copying car designs besides eating dogs.
March 14, 2007 @ 5:30 pm
Hyundai has pinched top people from various companies to compete. Another company, Kia is doing the same. So resemblance in design is incidental. After all this is still a concept.
March 14, 2007 @ 6:11 pm
Have you all noticed that all the Koreans did in auto shows were to showcase their daring and outwards design and nothing much on its cars’ engine etc?

Everyone copy Kia n Hyundai design? You gotta be kiddin, Europeans are very reserved you know, they will never ever come out with a Honda, Toyota-lookin car. It will forever be the other way round.
You said that Hyundai takin Audi n European, so doesn’t that mean Hyundai copied them? Too bad, they can’t come out somethin on their own, so they had to employ the Germans? What a pity, even we can come out something on our own!! Ugly n unreliable, bt still Msian. Wanna get better, oni one way: be the best (and take experties from the best)!!!
March 14, 2007 @ 6:37 pm
Hyundai designs are getting better these days. Kudos!
March 14, 2007 @ 9:12 pm
definately looks familiar…. have some kind of Toyota shapes!
anyway its seem like everyone had running out of idea as the motor industries had gone mature… so prudent design are more welcomed!
March 14, 2007 @ 9:16 pm
i second all of u guys…its a camry copycat
March 14, 2007 @ 9:17 pm
looks like toyota camry….
March 15, 2007 @ 8:36 am
Whatever it comes in the end. If it looks like this, powered with a V8 engine and priced the same as the camry, this could be a winner.
This is just a concept, from what I see, Hyundai will surely play safe and the final product will be a lot toned down from the original concept car. Just look at the FD concept which in the end turns out to be i30 with a lot of ganas styling removed.
I think this is the actual prototype in testing:

All this comments about how hyundai and kia have pinched people from well known auto industries to compete and will be better off in the future..
So let me ask this, why hasn’t all the companies they ‘talents’ were pinched from, slowing down in their designs but are in fact becoming better at it? Kinda makes you want to question who they actually pinched doesn’t it?
