Vehicles sales drop again in February 2007

February 2007 automobile sales dropped once again, falling 14.1% to 31,284, of which 28,430 units are passenger cars while the remaining are commercial vehicles. MAA blames this on a short working month, rumours of lower duties on car prices, no new models among the basic segment, and stringent credit approval.

Overall sales for the year are down, with 66,331 cars sold so far compared to 77,646 for the same period of time in 2006. Production for February 2007 also dropped from 47,647 in February 2006 to only 25,686 units!

MAA expects sales will pick up in the second half of the year, which could possibly happen as one of the most awaited bread-and-butter basic segment cars will be launched, the Perodua Kancil Replacement Model.

Yes…MAA and all thier wisdom….. ever think that the general (share) market was good in February meaning people’s income was channeled into investments instead of a car?

Cars are far from commodities here. When will they ever figure out that even a basic car (read Kancil) cost more than most of the population’s annual salary. Even as middle management, I still have to think twice about plonking down 60k for a car. I have better ways of spending 60k than buying a highly depreciative car.

Blame on short working month for Feb 2007? Can somebody remind me if in previous years February has a full 30/31 day period?

With Proton slashing its Saga price, 2nd hand value would be too low. Making it not a right move to trade in their Proton for new. I heard even 2nd hand Kancil price drop 3-5K in the past few weeks.

    LoL… Superb comment.. :p
Anyway, the main reason is the pricing.. Even car exported to Indonesia is cheaper than being sold here.. I dunno wut to say anymore..

Another politically-correct although less creative this time statement by the MAA. Festivities has always been the time when sales numbers escalate and reach their peaks. Why don’t they say because of the BURSA 3% slide or late bonuses from companies or anything else less obvious?
