Brilliance BL18T wins BorgWarner China Heart award
BorgWarner has announced the winners of the 2007 China Heart awards - an annual event which picks China’s top 10 engines.
The 2007 China Heart awards are selected by an independant evaluation committee comprising of 14 members from research agencies, universities, and media. An engine must be manufactured in China, equipped for vehicles made in China, and in mass production in China for the current year to quality for the awards. 59 engines by 34 OEMs and engine manufacturers were rated based on performance, technology, market performance, and environmental-friendliness. The winners are:
- Mazda 6 2.3L engine from FAW Car Company
- Audi 3.2L FSI engine from FAW-VW
- BMW 3.0L engine from Brilliance BMW
- Roewe 2.5L engine from Shanghai Motor Company
- Buick 2.4L engine from Shanghai General Motors
- Magotan & Skoda 1.8 TSI engine from FAW-VW
- Zun Chi 1.8T engine from Brilliance Auto
- Corolla 1.8L engine from FAW-Toyota
- Brilliance Jun Jie 1.8L engine from Dong’an Engine Company
- SX 4 1.6L engine from Chang’an Suzuki
It would be interesting to note that the only actual Chinese engine there is Brilliance Auto’s Zun Chi 1.8T engine. The rest are all global engines in global cars, perhaps with minor localization for the Chinese market.
Some of you who have been following my blog for more of the year should be able to remember the Brilliance Zun Chi - it was featured back in April 2006 but I spelled the name “Junjie” instead of Zun Chi. Its a rather decent looking car, and this particular engine that won the top 10 award powers the top of the range variant of the car.
The engine is codenamed the BL18T, and it is a turbocharged 1.8 liter engine making 167 horsepower at 5,500rpm and 235Nm of torque constantly from 2,000rpm to 4,500rpm. It has a bore and stroke of 81×87mm.
Quite a decent effort from a Chinese car manufacturer, isn’t it? The Brilliance Zun Chi/Junjie itself is not too bad looking - you can view it by clicking the link below.

How about our Petronas E01 engine? It is not listed in the top ten ‘Chinese’ ? Dear Paul, NBC just released the new Knight Rider a.k.a. the black Ford Mustang just like the bullit edition. Can you blog on this. It is different from the famous KITT Corvette.

KITT was a F-body Firebird.
As for the P01, I dont think they have started production yet, hence its not on the list.

why am i not surprised?
if malaysia has this award, for sure proton will grab a piece of the cake too.

The Chinese have turbocharge 1.8T engine… We only have CPS+VIM.. If compare output i think the Chinese will win us in performance…
Anyway the engine award above must be manufacture in China, but in Malaysia we only see the Campro engine… That why i foreseen China is going to be greater & greater thx to the foreign who invest so heavily on China. If Petronas P01 is manufactured in China maybe got laa..

Even China has an engine that rivals the 4B11T from Mitsubishi… it is turbo-charged and chain-driven. What do we have? An exact replica of 4G92 that cracks under high RPMs.

also having intake and exhaust has variable valve timing actuator at the pulley..?

aaron, i think you meant to say we have an exact replica of the 4g18 block (although it does have lots of differences and now having the CPS and VIM)…
By the way the brilliance 1.8 turbo is actually loosely based on the 4g93 turbo engine.

Engine aspiration is not about tech advance, its all about option. and i believe that out humble Campro and Petronas e01 can be competitive…of course if its made in china. Hey why not if it can make our Persona cost 30k OTR
