Mercedes-Benz releases CLC-Class Coupe teaser

CLC Class TeaserMercedes Benz has released a teaser visual of the new Mercedes-Benz CLC-Class coupe that shows quite clearly the front design of the car.

The Mercedes-Benz CLC-Class itself will be unveiled at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, which takes place from the 27th to 31st of January 2008.

The teaser photo shows a black Mercedes-Benz CLC-Coupe equipped with the sports package and 18 inch alloy wheels. Click the photo on the left to reveal a higher resolution image.

The baseline model will be the Mercedes-Benz CLC200K, putting out 184 horsepower from its supercharged 1.8 liter.

When Mercedes-Benz first registered the CLC trademark back in May 2006, some speculated it could be a convertible version of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. Now it is clear that the CLC is more like a C-Class coupe instead.

For those who want to know, the beautiful lady in the image is Eva Padberg, a Mercedes-Benz fashion brand ambassador. The photographer is Ellen von Unwerth.

Tata 1-Lakh Car to use Bosch Value Motronic

Artist’s Impression - Click to enlarge

Bosch’s new Value Motronic is a new engine management platform for gasoline-powered engines, aimed to provide maximum functionality at minimum cost. What Bosch has done is cut down the use of sensors, injectors, and other hardware, instead using more intelligent software to make up for the reduction in sensors.

The Bosch Value Motronic is one of the key items to scale down the cost of the new Tata 1 Lakh car, which Tata calls the People’s Car. The cheap, no-nonsense car will be built using re-engineered plastics and modern adhesives, and is aimed at converting India’s many motorcycle users to something with 4 wheels and a roof, which will ultimately benefit them as it is much safer.

The car’s 660cc engine (expect to produce 30 to 35hp) will not only use Bosch’s Value Motronic ECU but sources say the engine itself will be built by Bosch, who has just setup Bosch India by investing Rs 850 crore (RM 710 million) into its Indian operations previously known as Mico Bosch. Total investment in India by the German automotive technology company will reach Rs 2,650 crore (RM 2.2 billion) by 2010.

Those who have seen the 4-seater car describe it as a small jellybean shaped car, and our very own talented Theophilus Chin has whipped up a very nice artist’s impression (shown above) which will have to do until the car is unveiled at the Delhi Motor Show on Thursday!

Triple rotor Mazda Furai Concept

Mazda Furai

The Mazda Furai Concept unveiled at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show recently was basically a rebodied 2005 Courage C65 racecar chassis, given a closed-cockpit fiberglass body that complies with 2008 American Le Mans Series rules.

The new body can generate 80% of the original race-spec body’s downforce, a respectable feat considering it was designed without the use of a wind tunnel. The Mazda Furai Concept is powered by a three-rotor Mazda 20B rotary fueled by E100, which is basically ethanol. Normally aspirated, it puts out 450 horsepower.

Tata invests in car powered by compressed air

MDI Air Car

Guy Negre was a Formula One motor racing engineer. The Frenchman has been looking for 15 years for backers for his invention - a car that runs on air - and he now has the backing of Tata, who have invested 20 million Euros in his project.

Negre’s car uses compressed air to move pistons, which in turn also helps compress the air again in a reservoir. The car also has an electric motor, which also compresses air. This electric motor uses batteries that need to be charged. The compressed air can also be filled up at service stations in a matter of minutes.

His company Motor Development International based in France has developed an entire series of engine and car prototypes, some of which include fuel engine options together with the compressed air system. The fuel engine is used to extend the car’s range when not in reach of a special power point or a service station.

The car will be built in India and pre-production will start this year. It is protected by 50 patents, and the car will cost between 3,500 to 4,000 euros (RM17,000 to RM19,400). It weighs not more than 330kg and goes up to a top speed of 150km/h. Projected range is about between 160 to 320 km, depending on traffic conditions.

“It is clear that with oil at $100 a barrel this will force people to change their use of fuel and pollute less. My car is zero pollution in town and almost no pollution on the highways,” said Negre.

Look after the jump for a video on how the engine works.

Toyota A-BAT Concept pickup truck

Toyota A-BAT Concept

Toyota’s A-BAT Concept (Advanced Breakthrough Aero Truck) could preview the upcoming rumoured Scion light pickup truck in the US market. It was developed by the TMS Advanced Product Strategy group and Calty, Toyota’s North American-based, research and design center located in Newport Beach, California. The A-BAT Concept was designed for a buyer group with a unique combination of lifestyle activities.

The Toyota A-BAT Concept is built on a monocoque platform and is powered by Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, paired with an inline-4 gasoline engine. The rear has a 4 feet long bed, with a translucent roof panel that slides open to allow for tall cargo in the cab. A pass-through midgate can be folded down to lengthen the bed by an extra 2 feet.

The bed includes tailgate lighting for illuminating the load in the bed, a first aid kit and flashlight integrated into the tailgate, sliding tie downs, and an AC power outlet. The bed walls have lockable storage drawers. There is also a large sliding drawer beneath the bed, accessible without opening the tailgate.

The Toyota A-BAT’s monocoque chassis should provide for a more comfortable car-like driving experience, making the A-BAT a real urban warrior instead of an offroader.

Honda Civic Type R Modulo Kit

Honda Civic Type R Modulo

Believe it or not, this overly busy looking ricey design is a kit from Modulo! Set to debut at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Salon, Honda has stripped the Civic Type-R Modulo down even more, with the entire interior replaced with carbon fiber wherever possible. Even the power window switches have been moved to the center area because the door panel has been replaced with a simple carbon fiber panel.

The famous double-tiered dashboard has been redesigned, with the rev counter now on the top deck and the speedo on the lower deck - basically they’ve swapped positions to suit a race track environment.

No other technical details on the car are available at the moment, but these product photos seem to reveal electronically adjustable dampers of which status is shown in an LCD display where the normal 2-DIN head unit is.

New Knight Rider Movie 30 second spot

Knight Rider Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR

In a world of product placements where Bumblebee ends up as a concept Chevrolet Camaro instead of a Volkswagen Beetle, it’s no surprise that the new Knight Rider movie will star a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR as K.I.T.T. NBC has released a teaser trailer on the new Knight Rider movie, which you will find after the jump.

Ford’s turbocharged direct injection EcoBoost

EcoBoostThe brand name TwinForce has been dropped for a new name called EcoBoost, which encompasses a far wider range of engines than just the twin turbocharged V6 we knew as the TwinForce. (click image to enlarge)

The EcoBoost family includes inline-4 and V6 engines. It uses a combination of direct injection and turbocharging to improve fuel efficiency. Ford group vice president of Global Product Development says customers can expect to recoup their initial investment in a 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine through fuel savings in approximately 30 months. A diesel will take an average of seven and one-half years, while the cost of a hybrid will take nearly 12 years to recoup. This is based on costs in the US.

The first EcoBoost product will be introduced in the Lincoln MKS, and this will be the 3.5 liter twin turbocharged V6 unveiled earlier. The force inducted V6 produces the same amount of power as a V8 engine, but it has a much nicer torque curve - 461Nm of torque from 2,000rpm to 5,000rpm, compared to a normally aspirated 4.6 liter V8 that only makes between 366Nm to 420Nm over the same rev range.

Ford picked the EcoBoost brand over TwinForce because the primary use of the technology is for fuel economy and emissions. It was worried consumers would associate the brand TwinForce with power instead.

Proton BLM Step-by-Step Build Up Teaser

Proton BLM Build Teaser

I was at the entrance of Cineleisure Mutiara Damansara this evening to watch Proton’s step by step build up teaser for the new Proton Saga replacement model, codenamed the Proton BLM. It was quite an interesting experience.

By the time I arrived the build up had already begun. There was a huge crowd around the demonstration area even though it was raining. I am guessing a baseline car such as the BLM is truly a car everyone has an interest or “stake” in, as potential owners could be any one of us - either for ourselves, our spouses or our children, etc.

The frame you see in these photos is not the actual frame of a car but a special frame prepared by the prototype shop for this teaser demonstration purpose - hence it does not have a roof. The real full monocoque frame will have the roof structure attached to it. The segments painted with yellow in the frame are specific to the crash performance of the car - these were either crumple zones or areas that absorb most of the collision energy.

The Proton assembly engineers did some work on the bare frame, starting off with things like the wheels and the handbrake lever. By the end of the day the result is what you see in these photos. The next build up date is on the 11th of January 2008 at 8pm where more stuff will be added on to the car.

Some details on the specifications of the car is revealed from the frame. We can see the design of the 14 inch alloy wheels which have Silverstone 185/60R14 tyres wrapping them. We can also see the design of the rear suspension which is of a torsion beam setup, similiar to the Proton Savvy. This is natural as the Proton BLM is essentially built on a stretched Proton Savvy platform. The compact design of a torsion beam rear suspension will benefit the boot space - a Proton staff at the teaser demo told me the boot capacity will be in the regions of more than 400 liters.

The Proton BLM will have a wheelbase of 2465mm, which is 70mm longer than the Proton Savvy’s because of the extended platform. The car is 4257mm long. Width has also been increased to 1680mm not inclusive of wing mirrors, compared to the Perodua Myvi’s 1665mm and the Viva’s 1475mm. Front and rear track is 1446mm, 26mm wider than the Savvy’s.

We also got to see the new 1.3 liter Campro engine with the IAFM module in the engine bay of the frame - in this car it was mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, but the driveshafts were not connected to the front wheels. The IAFM module is essentially a variable intake geometry system.

No official specs on the engine at the moment, but Proton managing director Syed Zainal himself noted that he had personally test driven the car and throttle response was quite spritely, unlike the lethargic feeling you get at low revs with the original Campro engine.

With all the leaked information, photos and spyshots of the Proton BLM all over the internet, how the new IAFM-equipped Campro engine drives is perhaps the car’s best guarded secret, and one of the most important things about the car.

Proton also aims to sell between 4,500 to 5,000 units of the new Proton BLM every month. The Proton BLM will be launched on the 18th of January 2007. 3,000 bookings for the car have been made since bookings opened on the 1st this month.

More parts will be added to the build-up demo frame on the 11th of January 2008 at 8pm, so expect another update after that time!
