Lexus studying possibility of compact SUV

lexuslogo.jpgToyota is currently evaluating the possibility of a small Lexus SUV-like vehicle, despite earlier stands that a compact vehicle would diminish the Lexus brand and overlap with Toyota-badged vehicles.

“A small Lexus SUV could be a response to the urbanization of Gen Y buyers and empty-nest boomers. Toyota’s advanced product strategy group is studying a demographic trend - people who are sick of the suburbs, but who don’t want to give up the utility of their SUV. A small luxury SUV might be the right product for that environment,” says Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. president.

If a compact SUV is built, Lentz says it would most likely be priced in the upper half of the US$30,000 price range, as if the car is priced in the low 30s it would sacrifice too many luxury features to hit the price. This is tricky as the mid-sized Lexus RX350 is already priced at about US$38,000 in the US market.

Proton Waja CPS 1.6 now in showrooms!

Waja CPS

I have just returned from a Proton Edar showroom in the neighbourhood and snapped photos of the new Proton Waja CPS to share with you.

The showroom I visited only had the manual version on display, so you will not be able to see the new gated shifter in detail but then again you’ve already seen it in my previous spyshot post, so not too much of a loss there. Showrooms have started taking bookings for the new Proton Waja CPS beginning today, and prices are supposed to top out at about RM65K for the automatic version.

Let’s have a look at the Waja CPS photos after the jump.

BMW: “Don’t trust advertising. Only trust yourself.”

BMW Trust Yourself

BMW recently saw the switch from Jung von Matt (which left the BMW account for Mercedes-Benz) to Media Audience Beratung, and MAB’s first ad campaign for BMW carries the tagline: “Don’t trust advertising. Only trust yourself.”

The campaign consists of a series of print ads and TV commercials, of which the print ad is shown above (in German), and the TV commercial is viewable after the jump. The cleverly done ad campaign tells consumers not to trust advertising and instead test drive the 3-Series themselves to find out what a great drive it is.

The TV commercial starts off with beautiful and exaggerated scenes of the BMW 3-Series driving through the countryside, but slowly everything including the background music disappears and you are only left with the car.

View the video after the jump.

Bosch to start turbocharger business with Mahle

vtg_1.jpgWith the trend of engines moving towards smaller displacement engines with forced induction, we are looking at more companies entering the turbocharger business currently dominated by Garrett (Honeywell), Borgwarner, and IHI, of whom in total control a total of 88% of the market, with Garrett holding more than half at 56%.

Joining new competitor Daimler as newbies in the turbocharging market is Robert Bosch, who will be setting up a 50:50 joint venture with German company Mahle to develop and sell turbochargers. The companies will invest an unknown three-digit million Euros into Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems, and the first Bosch Mahle turbochargers will roll off the production line in 2010.

Nissan Latio Test Drive

The new Nissan Latio has arrived on our local shores a few months ago, and has redefined the B-class economy sedan segment somewhat. We are very used to the baseline Japanese models having 1.5 liter engines as with the Vios and the City, but the Nissan Latio comes with 1.6 liter and 1.8 liter, the same engine displacements that the Nissan Sentra previously was offered with.

Suzuki has released an official front three quarter photo of the new Suzuki Equator pick-up truck, a badge reengineered version of the US market mid-sized second generation Nissan Frontier, built on the Nissan F-Alpha platform.

The F-Alpha ladder frame platform can be configured with either a fully independent suspension or with a rear solid axle, but as with the Frontier, the Suzuki Equator will go the solid axle way. Expect it to be powered by the same 265 horsepower 4.0 liter V6 in the Frontier.
