The Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept combines the design language from the Aero X in this revival of the old Saab 9X Concept, Saab’s earlier concept hatchback back at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show. Read more on the concept after the jump.

It features GM’s new 1.4 liter BioPower turbocharged (1.6 bar of boost) engine mated to GM’s next generation Hybrid system. The engine features direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. The combined hybrid drive produces a total of 200 horsepower, and CO2 emissions of 105g/km on E85 bioethanol. Torque output is a total of 280Nm, and this gets channeled through a six-speed automated clutch manual.

The next generation GM Hybrid system uses lithium ion batteries located under the cargo floor to store energy. An electric motor/generator driven with a belt from the crank replaces a conventional alternator. Engine braking and other deceleration recharges the batteries, and the engine also supports automatic start-stop during traffic. The batteries can also be charged by the large solar cell in the glass roof.

The Saab 9-X BioHybrid features a variable rear bodywork - this means the upper and lower bodywork is reshaped at speeds above 70km/h with an extended roof spoiler and underbody diffuser. This enhances aerodynamics by reducing drag. The suspension setup uses a MacPherson strut setup at the front, and a torsion beam with coil spring setup typical of a hatchback at the rear.

The interior seats 4, and features a driver-focused main instrument panel that sweeps out from teh top of the door moulding, arching across the driver. The in-car connectivity interface was developed by Sony Ericsson, and features a wireless interface for streaming data, entertainment and satellite navigation functions for display and use.
