International Engine of the Year Awards 2008 results coming in May!
The results for the 2008 International Engine the Year Awards 2008 will be announced on the 7th of May 2008.
Personally I can’t wait to see if BMW retains its engine throne or not. BMW has scooped more trophies for engine excellence than any other company in the Awards 10-year history, and if you drive a car with one of their old 1990s engines today, you’ll be amazed at how much torque their “outdated” normally aspirated engines put out across the rev range compared to current generation engines from many manufacturers. It’s no wonder they’ve only recently resorted to turbocharging.
This year’s International Engine of the Year Awards should be an interesting one as there are many new entries this year. Here are some of the new engines that will be considered for the trophies:
- Subaru’s new turbodiesel engine
- Nissan’s VR38DETT in the new Nissan GT-R
- Audi’s new twin turbocharged V10 in the RS6
- BMW’s new 4.0 liter V8 in the new BMW M3
- BMW’s new twin turbocharged turbodiesel in the BMW 123d
- BMW’s new 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8
- Mitsubishi’s turbocharged 2.0 liter 4B11T in the Evo X
The following are the categories for the awards: Best New Engine of the Year, Best Fuel Economy, Best Performance Engine, sub 1 liter engine, 1.0 to 1.4 liter engine, 1.4 to 1.8 liter engine, 1.8 to 2.0 liter engine, 2.0 to 2.5 liter engine, 2.5 to 3.0 liter engine, 3.0 to 4.0 liter engine, above 4.0 liter engine.

AFAIK Toyota doesn’t have an active displacement engine, more so an 8 cyc that runs on 3 and 5.
Looks like everyone has gone direct injection-variable everything-turbocharging…and diesel for that matter. I wonder we are like what, 10 years behind, no make that 15?

Well, when it comes to engineering an engine, the sky’d the limit they say. I mean look at what companies like BMW, VW, Merc and Honda have given us, and let’s not forget Felix Wankel’s rotary engines since the NSU days.
From the list, nothing stands out more than Nissan’s new heart in the R35 GT-R, but i secretly feel that BMW will take the throne again.
The GT-R engine has heaps of performance, so much that it could propel Jap’s new Godzilla past the lighter 997 911 turbo. With more emphasis being placed into the engine’s dynamics and efficiency, i guess Munich may just celebrate again.

My vote is for the GT-R’s VR38DETT and Audi’s new twin turbocharged V10 in the RS6. The rest just don’t seem innovative enough.
The VR38 because of it’s stonking performance figures for a V6 and the V10 for massive power.
I wonder, how come Audi’s twin turbo V10 diesel with the crazy torque figures isn’t in the list, not yet produced perhaps.

i vote for any diesel that are GREEN!
less CO2 and other toxic properties but yet provide good torque figure where almost most user needs!
hate those huge petrol sucker that suck cats, dogs, rabbits, birds along its ways… suck animal into intake manifold and incinerate them in combustion chamber! Care for animals please!

They sell better CBU models in Malaysia but their sale personales particularly at VW Cars are mostly unprofessional and not trutworty.
