The new BMW ActiveHybrid X6 xDrive50i: world’s most powerful hybrid!

BMW ActiveHybrid X6

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is truly mind-boggling. It’s an SUV, but the sloping roofline and two seats at the back kind of limit its utility and storage space. And it’s a hybrid which people usually associate with economy, yet its mated to a massive V8 twin turbocharged engine. There is not one but two electric motors, and the vehicle ends up having more torque than the BMW X6 M, a full 100Nm more to be exact.

The V8 motor puts out 407 horses, while the two electric motors make 91 horses and 86 horses respectively. All three propulsion devices running at the same time produces a peak 485 horses, with a massive peak torque of 780Nm.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6

This not only makes the X6 M the most powerful hybrid ever, but its also the most torquey BMW ever, beating the 760Li’s 750Nm by 30Nm. Only the upcoming BMW-built Rolls-Royce Ghost’s 6.6 liter V12 engine equals the ActiveHybrid X6′s 780Nm. 0 to 100km/h takes just 5.6 seconds, the car puts out 231g/km of CO2, while fuel consumption on the EU5 cycle is 9.9 liters per 100km.

Interestingly, BMW says this vehicle uses a 7-speed automatic transmission. Since when does BMW have a 7-speed automatic, other than the DCT and M DCT systems? This is not a conventional gearbox, as BMW says the transmission is “provided by the electric motors”.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6

It is an e-CVT, which is quite similiar to how the Prius’s e-CVT is also not a real transmission but instead is the result of the car’s two electric motors working together with various other components. Like the Prius too, one motor acts mostly as a generator while the other motor actually drives the vehicle. The two motors linked by three planetary gearsets are able to provide 7 different ratios.

The ActiveHybrid X6 can also run on an EV mode, which means on the motors only, at speeds of up to 60km/h for distances of up to 2.5km. Of course for EV mode the car must be driven gently – step on it abit more than the threshold and the V8 springs to life to provide you with the acceleration that the car thinks you need. Of course like any other hybrid it has a auto start-stop feature.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6

Unlike the ActiveHybrid 7-Series which uses lithium ion batteries, the ActiveHybrid X6 uses NiMH batteries and they are positioned beneath the floor of the luggage compartment. The batteries are liquid cooled with a heat exchanger that is cooled via outside air flow and also optionally through the air conditioning cooling circuits, depending on the cooling requirements needed.

New BMW ActiveHybrid 7 hybrid luxo-barge to face-off the S400 BlueHybrid

BMW ActiveHybrid 7

BMW now has a competitor for the S400 BlueHybrid – the new BMW ActiveHybrid 7. The ActiveHybrid 7 (available in both F01 and F02 longwheelbase bodies, with the long wheelbase called the BMW ActiveHybrid 7L) uses a mild hybrid system, also sometimes called a motor assist system.

Basically the V8 engine and 8-speed ZF automatic transmission is assisted by a three-phase synchronous electric motor weighing 23kg to give a peak output of 465 horses and 700Nm of torque. The electric motor (20 horses and 210Nm of torque) is positioned between the V8 and the 8-speeder’s torque converter, and receives power from a 35 cell 400wH lithium ion battery, which can also be recharged by the motor via brake energy regeneration.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7

This lithium ion battery measures 370mm by 220mm by 230mm and weighs 27kg, and is housed in the luggage compartment between the wheel arches, protected by a high-strength casing. Basically BMW had to remove the air-conditioning compressor for the rear aircond vents to make space for the battery.

0 to 100km/h takes 4.9 seconds, while EU test cycle fuel consumption is rated at 9.4 liters per 100km. CO2 emissions have been measured at 219g/km. Not exactly figures that will make greenheads drool but being an enthusiast I’m quite interested in experiencing the kind of pulling power that a high torque turbocharged engine and an inherently torquey electric motor can give.

BMW ActiveHybrid 7

The ActiveHybrid 7 also features automatic start-stop, which is said to be a first on a BMW equipped with an automatic transmission. Auto start-stop has been available for quite sometime now as part of their EfficientDynamics program but have previously been available only on manual transmission models.

The air conditioning and other systems remain fully operational whenever the engine is off, however being a mild hybrid system the car will not move with the V8 engine turned off – it will only turn off when you come to a stop. The air conditioning system can also be activated remotely via the remote control to cool down the car sufficiently before you get into the car.

Look after the jump for a full hi-res gallery and a video of the new BMW ActiveHybrid 7.

Accord Crosstour to arrive early next month!

Honda Accord Crosstour

Honda USA has put up a teaser on their website of the new Accord Crosstour (they’re officially spelling it that way without the capital T in tour) together with a countdown timer that indicates the new crossover D-segment car will be unveiled in less than 20 days. The Accord Crosstour will likely be some kind of competitor to the Toyota Venza – the utility of an SUV combined with whatever they think they’re combining it with – just removing the all-wheel drive system is only going to be a marginal improvement and Honda’s all-wheel drive systems already run in front wheel drive most of the time in the first place. These new crossovers are a plot to push hatchbacks to the traditionally hatchback-hating American customers. More details to be unveiled in under 20 days, but in the meantime visit our previous posts for some spyshots of the Crosstour.

Proton R3 Malaysia Rally Team with Neo S2000 and Karamjit/Jagdev officially launched!

Proton Satria Neo Super 2000
Click for enlarged image

Proton officially launched its new Proton R3 Malaysia Rally Team yesterday. The team will run one of those new Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 rally cars and it will be piloted by a team that needs no introduction: Karamjit Singh and Jagdev Singh as driver and navigator respectively. The Neo recently finished 4th place at the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in Russia, driven by Guy Wilks.

“It has been quite a while but we’re now ready to return to the rally motorsports arena. With the Neo S2000 and our long time associate Karamjit, we are sure that we will put up a strong challenge in this championship. What the car has achieved thus far while still in the developmental stage has been extraordinary,” said Proton chairman Dato Mohd Nadzmi.

When asked about his thoughts on the race, Karamjit said he was concerned that his left-hand drive Proton Satria Neo S2000 has him at a disadvantage. “If the car was right-hand-drive I would be confident and able to attack. It’s a fabulous car and the tricky Stages I can handle. I just don’t feel comfortable so I’ll be taking it easy to ensure we finish,” Karamjit said after completing the reconnaissance earlier today.

Rallying has done wonders for Subaru and Mitsubishi in their brand building efforts and Proton is also using the rally scene as a platform to showcase their cars, namely the Satria Neo Super 2000. The Neo will race at the Rally of Malaysia this weekend, and will move on to Indonesia on the 3rd to 4th October and then the China Rally on the 14-15 November.

Look after the jump for some photos of the Neo S2000 on test on Malaysian soil before the official launch, and also read up my previous stories on the Neo S2000 to find out more about the rally car.

Initial details on BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and BMW X6 ActiveHybrid unveiled!

BMW ActiveHybrid

Some initial details and low-res photos of the upcoming hybrid versions of the 7-Series and X6 scheduled for public debut at the Frankfurt show this year have appeared on the internet. Both vehicles will be based on the 4.4 liter V8 engine but the 7-Series will have an electric motor, while the X6 will have two motors.

BMW ActiveHybrid

The turbocharged V8 and the two motors allow the X6 ActiveHybrid to produce a combined total of 478 horsepower and a massive 780Nm of torque, which is a full 100Nm more than the X6-M! Though its likely that none of the extra equipment require more space in terms of height in the engine bay, BMW has gone and added a powerdome to the X6′s bonnet anyway.

BMW ActiveHybrid

The 7-Series ActiveHybrid features a 459 horsepower and 760Nm combined total output. There is a fundamental difference between how these two hybrid systems work. The X6 can run on EV mode, which means it can move propelled by the electric motors alone with the V8 engine shut off (though only for 2.5km at speeds of up to 60km/h), while the 7-Series uses a motor assist setup which means the electric motor cannot be used standalone. Clearly not exactly positioned for those who really want to do their bit to save the earth or even save fuel, otherwise they would have based these babys on the 3.0 liter turbo six instead of the turbo V8.

New video on the Ferrari 458 Italia

Ferrari 458 Italia

Ferrari has released a new video on the Ferrari 458 Italia and the video gives us a new view angle on the 458 Italia that I don’t think we’ve seen before. It’s a view of the car’s tail lamps, which are lit up with LEDs.

Anyway, the video basically features Ferrari Senior VP of Commercial and Brand Dany Bahar and Ferrari Technical Director Roberto Fedeli talking about how awesome and Ferrari-like they think the new Ferrari 458 Italia is. We also learn that the aerodynamics generates 55kg of downforce at 125km/h, and up to 365kg of downforce at 325km/h.

Still not much footage of the actual car in action. More sights and sounds of the car please! For now, watch the video after the jump.

Ford Ranger XL gets facelift too with price bump

Ford Ranger XL

The Ranger XL now gets the same facelift as the Ranger XLT and RM3k bump in price to RM72,888 and RM76,388 in the Peninsular and East Malaysia respectively, up from the previous prices of RM69,888 and RM73,388. These prices do not include road tax, registration and insurance.

The new facelifted Ranger XL has an MP3-capable CD player, 16 inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, electronically controlled side mirrors, an immobiliser and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. The XL’s front grille is made of plastic. Just like the promotion that Sime Darby had when the Ranger XL was first launched as the pre-facelift model, they are giving out a free bedliner and sidesteps during the introductory period.

Ford Ranger XL

Not much changes in the engine bay – the same 2.5 liter 12 valve SOHC indirect injection turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS at 3,500rpm and 257Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. This is a less sophisticated engine compared to the XLT’s twin cam direct injection engine with a VGT turbo that makes 143 PS. It comes with a 5-speed manual transmission only.

There are no airbags and I don’t think I see ABS anywhere on the spec sheet. 6 colours are available – Winning Blue, Cool White, Arizona Gold, Titanium Gray, Black Mica and Silver Metallic. If you’re looking for cheap trucks for work purposes only thus want to save some money by removing some equipment and having an older and less complicated engine, you can consider this Ranger XL.

An alternative would be the Triton Lite which has an even simpler diesel engine (with no turbocharger) but costs much less at under RM60k.

Jaguar XFR launched with RM888,888 pricetag

Jaguar XFR

The Jaguar XFR is now here in Malaysia, featuring the new AJ-V8 Gen III (AJ133) engine that produces 510 PS and 625Nm of torque. Jaguar did alot of shouting when the XFR was first released, claiming it was the fastest Jaguar ever based on the top speed of 363.188km/h recorded at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats.

And how much would you have to pay for one of these? RM888,888 OTR without insurance. Now what else can you get in Malaysia for that money? Two cars come to mind – the BMW M5, and the Brabus S B7 which is a tuned up W221 S350 S-Class. The XFR is definitely a looker in the metal and in photos as well, and the engine sound even at idle really stirs up some adrenaline.

That exhaust system is really some good work on Jaguar’s part, and even just teasing the engine with some light revs produce a real beautiful induction and exhaust sound, which I’m sure everyone at the Pavilion tonight enjoyed. Supercharged V8s seem to maintain that amazing way they sound, while a turbocharger in the middle of the exhaust stream seem to screw around with the engine note a little.

Jaguar XKR

SISMA Auto also unveiled the latest Jaguar XKR today, which gets the Jaguar Drive Selector knob from the XJ and the same 510 PS and 625Nm engine as the XFR. The XKR goes for RM1,088,888 for the coupe and for the convertible there is a premium of RM150k, so it retails at RM1,158,888.

For now these figures definitely beat the BMW M5′s but I have a feeling they might fall short once the F10 M5 is out, since the X5-M and X6-M already have a 555 PS engine. But with both BMW and Jaguar’s monster engines featuring forced induction it should be much easier to wring more power out of them anytime.

Look after the jump for more photos I snapped at the launch event.

How do differentials work: old-school video

Differential

The rear axles of a rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive car have come a really long way, with the latest systems featuring advanced torque vectoring systems such as the Vector-Drive system BMW uses (they call it Dynamic Performance Control) supplied by GKN Driveline. But still, do you know how a basic differential works? Reader Zali sent in this really cool video that makes understanding how a differential works so simple! It’s about 8 minutes long and great if you like “how stuff works” kinds of content.

Watch the video after the jump.
