Llumar introduces tint film replacement programme

If you think your car’s window film is getting a bit tired from too much exposure, well, here’s some cheery news – Llumar Malaysia has introduced a Llumar Film Replacement Programme, which has the company offering its range of films as a replacement for your existing one, at marked down prices.

The programme, which began its run at KLIMS, is specifically aimed at existing car owners who are looking to replace their ride’s defective, faulty or old window film, and is set to run as demand dictates.

Effectively, you can expect to get 40% off the retail price in a package at KLIMS, with every product in the Llumar range offered in the deal. As is the case, a package is made up of a full car installation as well as a windscreen film, which is separately priced. After KLIMS, the discount for the FRP will be 30%.

It’s definitely competitive, the pricing with the 40% off – for example, in a package made up of Diamond 6 film (RM2,320) and Gold windscreen film (RM580) for a medium-sized car, With the replacement programme the cost goes down to RM1,740 from the original RM2,900 of the combination.

To reinforce things, Llumar Malaysia has also what it calls a Llumar Performance Guarantee, in which a film is guaranteed to perform and not deteriorate more than 3% in Total Solar Energy Rejection yearly (essentially, the total heat rejected, inclusive of IR, UV and visible light). The five-year guarantee works alongside the factory-backed 10 year warranty. If you’re visiting KLIMS, you can find out more about the programme at the company’s display booth there.

Team Lotus chiefs respond to Lotus-Renault formation

Yes, Lotus Racing is now Team Lotus, at least according to FIA’s 2011 official entry list that was released at the end of last month. What does team boss Tony Fernandes have to say about yesterday’s announcement that Group Lotus has bought over Renault’s shares in the Renault F1 Team to form Lotus-Renault?

“Dany Bahar has done us a favour. Never felt better about our future and Team Lotus. Looks like they’re trying to hijack our black and gold idea,” Fernandes wrote on his Twitter page, referring to Group Lotus’ CEO. Last month, Lotus Racing said that they will be ditching their green/yellow for the famous black/gold livery.

Technical chief Mike Gascoyne also had something to say. “Thanks for all the messages of support from our fans,” he wrote on Twitter. “Rest assured, we are Team Lotus and we are here to stay and we at Team Lotus are in F1 to design, build and race F1 cars from our home in Norfolk, and in the future to win as a Team, bring it on.”

Even as this camp is in defiant mood, Group Lotus boss Dany Bahar isn’t wishing for his opponents to fade away. He told BBC Radio Norfolk: “Not at all (a problem) – for me, four (cars on the grid) are better than two. The controversy, that is something that has mainly been pushed up by media I would say, has been dealt with directly by our shareholders in Malaysia and with the owners of the 1Malaysia Racing Team and doesn’t really touch us.

“However, my personal opinion is that four Lotus brands out there is better than two. I have nothing against that.”

Both Lotus Renault GP and Team Lotus for 2011?

Lotus Renault GP

So the announcement has been made that Group Lotus is officially in F1, in partnership with Genii Capital – the owner of the current Renault F1 team – beginning from the start of the 2011 season, and that it will be competing under the Lotus Renault GP name.

Group Lotus’ purchase of all the remaining shares held by Renault in the team makes the former the major equity partner, though Renault remains as the engine supplier, hence the retention of its name in the scheme of things.

The resulting formation of the team is no surprise, but the choice of livery colours might be – the combination of black and gold heralds back to those JPS-sponsored glory days, and is an inspired choice. Only, it’s identical to that chosen by Lotus Racing, which earlier announced that it would be competing in 2011 in black and gold.

To add to the confusion, Lotus Racing (or Team Lotus, if you will) is also being supplied with engines by Renault. So, it remains possible that we could see two teams competing under the Lotus name, both in the same colours, with the same engine supplier, the first of course dependent on how the court decides early next year.

When contacted, 1Malaysia Racing Team’s CEO Riad Asmat had this to say: “We will be called Team Lotus next year and we’re making great progress in the development of our car. We’re focused on what we need to do next year. On them, its truly their choice since they seem to have the means to do it – it’s a huge investment having seen things first-hand over here, but a niggling question remains in my mind though; do we really need another Malaysian-backed team?”

Lotus Racing

Whatever the final outcome may be, Proton’s decision to venture into F1 is purely as a business opportunity to take the Lotus brand to a higher plane, and that because of the historical significance, motorsports was selected as a key communication tool to enhance the brand’s image and awareness as well as helping to support sales of its road cars further afield, something it had planned from 2009 before the ongoing dispute came about.

That was the underlying message that was conveyed during an informal session between Proton’s management and the media earlier today, in which questions about the current situation naturally cropped up.

The point was made that Group Lotus had extremely limited involvement in the Lotus Racing team – there was no management involvement, no technology exchange/contribution or staff exchange. The overview is that the collaboration with Lotus Racing did not bring the desired results – performance wise, while Lotus Racing was unarguably the best of the new teams in the 2010 season, the percentage of overall exposure was considered to be negligible.

Additionally, the reasons for the parting of ways have also been because of breaches – many ongoing – in the licensing agreement with Group Lotus. These include use of the Lotus roundel without consent from Group Lotus, wrongful sub-licensing of the “Lotus Racing” name and trademarks to third parties and selling “Lotus Racing” F1 merchandise excluded by the agreement.

Further breaches are in using the word “Lotus” in conjunction with “Team” on LR’s website and in marketing materials, the use of the Lotus Roundel and the word “Lotus” on its own on its premises, promotional materials and clothing without GL’s consent and the use of “Lotus Racing” outside the sphere of Formula 1, in British Formula 3 and Formula Renault.

Renault F1

And yes, seeking to obtain the right to use the name Team Lotus with the intention of using the name in the 2011 F1 season in contravention of the ‘Lotus Racing’ licence agreement contractually is part of it too.

Enough reminders were given to LR, with a final reminder issued on August 31 demanding full remedy/ rectification of these breaches, failing which termination would ensue. Instead of compliance, 1Malaysia Racing Team confirmed the termination of the licensing agreement. In essence, Lotus Racing invariably agreed to an end to things.

While the effects brought about by the dispute will definitely linger, Group Lotus is looking to move forward with its own F1 plans. It will provide Lotus access to a global branding platform that can showcase the brand’s engineering talent and ultimately, transform Lotus. Then there’s the access to technological advances that can be potentially incorporated into new Lotus vehicles. It’s all part of a big plan to bring Lotus to higher levels. Lotus in its current form has been unprofitable – so it seems it’s time for a new plan, a gamble no doubt, but the Lotus board members seem to be convinced by Dany Bahar’s turnaround plan.

In addition to this, it seems the deal with Genii also offers Proton the ability to leverage on its existing business relationships in Russia and other parts of the world, as a means to expand Proton’s global reach. It’ll be interesting to watch that unfold.

So, while this one will run and run, at least some facts are on the table. The battle of the Lotuses has just properly begun, and this should definitely prove intriguing.

It’s official – Lotus Renault GP is a go for 2011!

After weeks of agonizing wait, it has been officially confirmed that Group Lotus will come into Formula 1 next season with Genii Capital, owner of the Renault F1 team. According to the press release, Group Lotus have signed a title sponsorship deal that will run till 2017.

As previous reports have suggested, Group Lotus has purchased all of the remaining shares held by Renault. This new partnership between Group Lotus and Genii has given birth to the Lotus Renault GP team. The team will continue to have Renault as its engine supplier, hence the reason why the French brand is in the team’s official name.

The press release also mentioned that Group Lotus will benefit form significant technological and commercial opportunities for its range of road cars through the sponsorship. Furthermore, it has also been confirmed that the team will make use of Lotus’ iconic black and gold colour scheme as the team’s official livery in 2011, as pictured in the artist impression above.

Interestingly, Tony Fernandes’ Lotus Racing team also plans to do the same. This colour combination was last seen in the 1980s.

Oil now over US$90/barrel: likely to climb to century mark

According to news reports, oil prices went past the US$90 a barrel price point yesterday, the first time it has done so since October 2008, and the recent surge has of course been responsible for pushing up the price of petrol and other fuels.

In the US, analysts at Wall Street have pointed out that with supply tightening, the price of crude is likely to pass the US$100 mark next year; as it is, gas prices in the US could reach a national average of US$3 a gallon at the pump before Christmas – it is currently US$2.958 a gallon.

Prices have been relatively stable for more than a year, remaining around the US$70 and US$80 per barrel mark. The jump came as the US Federal Reserve announced that it was planning to inject US$600 million into the US economy and the US Government laid out an agreement to extend tax cuts.

As such, the analysts predict that oil will hit US$100 per barrel sometime next year, with rising demand from China and other emerging economies further fueling things along. While current demands can be met by increased production from OPEC member countries, the situation after the next couple of years might see economic growth slowing down as energy costs increase.

The ongoing situation should push the EV and hybrid movement back to the limelight, especially in the US, where things have gotten a bit soft on that front after gas prices returned to well workable levels after the economic crisis dissipated.

MINI Countryman to race in the 2011 Dakar Rally!

The X-Raid team, which normally campaigns the BMW X3, has unveiled their machine for next year’s Dakar Rally, and it’s a MINI Countryman! The MINI All4 Racing will take part in what’s known as the “World’s Toughest Race” from New Year’s Day till January 16, 2011. If you haven’t already known, the Dakar Rally no longer ends in Dakar, but will be staged in South America, its home since 2009.

To be driven by Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit and co-driver Michel Perin, the All4 was discussed in the summer of 2009 but building work only started 90 days ago. X-raid team director Sven Quandt received the green light from BMW in June while Magna Steyr gave their OK in September, hence the rush. The MINI will be put through a series of tests in France next week before being flown to South America for final preparations and scrutineering in Buenos Aires at the end of the month.

The MINI will be powered by a variable twin-turbo diesel engine as per the 2011-spec BMW X3 CC and built in Steyr. Power is in the region of 315 hp and 710 Nm of torque, an increase over the 2010 BMW X3 CCs that placed fourth and fifth in this year’s Dakar.

The MINI is 10 cm shorter, 3 cm lower, and has a 10 cm reduced rear overhang over the X3 CC. “Compared to the BMW X3CC, the MINI will be characterised by improved handling as the overall length is shorter and it is lower. We have also been able to improve on many other smaller details, such as the relocation of smaller components to lower the centre of gravity,” Quandt said, adding that visibility, entry and exit is more difficult however.

The new car, which uses all the know how from developing the X3 CC over five years, fully complies with 2010 regulations and should be competitive from the outset.

Toyota Avanza updated with dark interior colour scheme

Even though it’s been 6 years since the Toyota Avanza was first introduced in 2004, I don’t think budget “ASEAN” models such as the Avanza follow Toyota’s regular 5 year lifecycle so the Avanza is soldiering on here in Malaysia, though I think the Perodua Alza has stolen much of its thunder.

Nevertheless UMW Toyota has given it another update, some based on feedback from consumers. The biggest change would be on the interior, where the Avanza now gets a dark interior colour scheme as opposed to the cream interior it previously had.

Fitments around the interior such as the carpet mats, bag hook and center console box are now black to match the darker interior theme.

Not much changes on the outside – the only one being a different “body stripe” design. Available in Grey Metallic, Dazzling Silver, Black MIca, White and Light Green Metallic, the Avanza is available in four different equipment levels:

  • Toyota Avanza 1.5 S Automatic – RM77,490
  • Toyota Avanza 1.5 G Automatic – RM74,990
  • Toyota Avanza 1.5 E Automatic – RM69,990
  • Toyota Avanza 1.3 E Manual – RM62,000

CNBC TV: Proton entering India in 2011 with Saga, Savvy and Exora – currently sourcing for diesel engines

Proton will finally enter India next year with three models, the Saga, Savvy and Exora, CNBC TV18 reports. The Indian business channel’s sources say that Proton is close to announcing the entry.

It adds that Proton will dive into the market on its own without a JV partner, but is likely to use Argentum Motors for contract assembly. One of the men behind Argentum – which has a facility in Surajpur, Noida – is BVR Subbu, the former Hyundai Motors India President that was appointed to the Proton board earlier this year. Subbu will head Proton’s assault on the fast growing Indian market.

According to the news report, Proton is currently re-engineering the cars to suit Indian roads and are in talks with certain OEMs to source diesel engines. Indian market leader Maruti Suzuki uses Fiat diesels for their cars; since the Multijet oil burner is already a known quantity, could it find its way into Proton’s trio? And if this diesel engine partnership (with whoever) takes off, will we be able to buy torquey and economical Protons in the near future? Here’s hoping!
