Lucky draw for Proton Saga buyers

There are currently long waiting lists for the Proton Saga, but there might be a way you could get delivery of your car in 2 weeks via a new lucky draw scheme by Proton. No, you don’t get a free Saga, but what you might win in the lucky draw is a chance to skip the long queue that currently takes months and get your Proton Saga delivered in approximately 2 weeks.

The lucky draw will be held weekly and will be carried out in the presence of an internal auditor. Every week, ten lucky customers will be picked, and will be able to get their cars delivered within 2 weeks of the draw. Winners must meet all the buying criteria – the settlement of the full down payment and receipt of the Letter of Undertaking (LOU) from the finance company.

Government proposes subsidised RON95 and unsubsidised RON99

The petrol that we find at petrol pumps these days are mostly RON97, with RON92 being available at a few stations (I can only think of Shell stations that have previously been Projet stations, Esso and Mobil stations). RON92 is the cheapest petrol at RM1.88 per liter. There are two different grades of RON97 available – the usual is priced RM1.92 and there is only one premium brand – Shell V-Power Racing, priced at RM2.15.

The government is proposing that these grades of petrol be revised to RON95 and RON99 instead. RON95 will be subsidised and have its price kept low, while the subsidies for RON99 fuel will be much lower, although still subsidised. This would mean the gap of price between the two grades of fuel will be much larger than compared to the current RM1.88 versus RM1.92 for RON92 versus RON97.

By doing this, the government thinks it effectively takes some burden off the low to middle-class income earners while the rich who “drive SUVs and performance cars” can pay more for their RON99 fuel, which will give them “better performance.”

In reality I can only think of a few cars that would require a fuel with an octane running higher than our maximum of RON97 to achieve its peak horsepower – the Honda Civic Type R and the Volkswagen Golf GTI which both run optimally on RON98 fuel. The engine’s computer automatically retards ignition timing to compensate for lower octane fuel – this means you won’t be getting the spec-sheet horsepower figures you paid for.

Some engines do more than just retard ignition timing. The Mazdaspeed 6 which needs at least RON91 (RON93 for optimum horsepower and torque) for example, cuts off its 2.3 liter DISI turbocharged engine’s boost through the means of a wastegate from 4,200rpm onwards to protect the engine.

The thing is, while filling up your car’s fuel tank with fuel that has a lower octane rating than specified will decrease performance, or with some old engines even damage the engine, unless you modify your engine like advance your ignition timing or run higher boost for example, you’re not going to get any benefits by using a fuel with a higher octane than required like RON99 fuel, unless the fuel companies are going to skimp on the additive package with the lower octane fuel, which is most likely going to be the case if the new RON95 is going to be offered at a lower price than our current RON97 price of RM1.92.

Saying RON99 fuel will offer better performance than RON92 based on octane alone is completely wrong, and plenty of luxury cars these days these days only require between RON92 and RON95 fuel, though it will work with fuel as low as RON91. Some latest generation normally aspirated Mazda engines have an even lower octane requirement, working perfectly fine and in fact designed for RON87!

But I must say that RON95 is a sweet spot choice, as alot of engines that are considered to require what is called “premium unleaded fuel” world-wide these days usually mean it needs a minimum of RON95.

As always, check with your workshop or manual to find out what octane your engine needs. Proton’s Campro engines and most of the 16 valve Mitsubishi engines installed in Protons (4G92 in Wira 1.6 and 4G93 in Satria GTi) run on a minimum of RON95. Buy higher octane fuel only if you like what the particular fuel’s additives package gives your engine and think the benefits are worth it. This can be very different from car to car, and alot of it depends on feeling, so its a very personal thing.

UPDATE #2: Many of the low to middle income consumers in Malaysia keep their cars for as long as 10 to 15 years or more. Old engines may and most likely have combustion chambers that are loaded with carbon deposits, affecting its shape and creating hot spots around. This increases the chances for engine knocking by a margin despite the proper fuel octane used. So for old engines, sometimes higher octane fuels have to be used to prevent engine knocking which will result in engine damage. Thus RON97 in a RON95 engine… I guess this is what we have been doing all this while.

UPDATE: DPM Najib Tun Razak says the government will decide on its plan to slash the subsidy for the higher grade of petrol before the end of 2008.

Nissan Qashqai now available as a 7 seater

Nissan has added a new three row 7-seater version of the Nissan Qashqai to its model lineup. The new SUV is called the Nissan Qashqai+2, aptly named because it is the Qashqai essentially with two more seats in the third row.

The new Nissan Qashqai+2 only shares body panels with the Qashqai at the front up to the A-pillar, after of which it looks like the same SUV, but only a longer, extended version. The wheelbase has been extended by 135mm while length has been extended by 211mm. The new Qashqai+2 is also taller by 38mm.

The third row is designed to fit humans up to 1.6 meters tall, which should be fine for children. The third row can be folded down to enlarge the boot area.

Engine options range from a baseline and probably underpowered 1.6 liter petrol, up to a 2.0 liter piezo-injection turbodiesel with 148 horsepower and 320Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Tan Chong now has an interesting model here that can be slotted into the same segment as the Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Captiva 7-seater SUVs currently occupy.

New Honda hybrid to use NiMH batteries

Takeo FukuiHonda President Takeo Fukui thinks that lithium ion batteries in hybrid or electric vehicles are akin to soukon, which is Japanese for people who decide to get married too early.

Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, but next generation hybrids by most car manufacturers are set to use lithium ion batteries, which are smaller, lighter and can store more electricity. The downside is that they tend to overheat and may be unsafe. Toyota’s first lithium-ion hybrid will arrive in 2010.

Honda’s new yet to be revealed dedicated hybrid vehicle – a spiritual successor to the Insight that is only available with a hybrid powertrain – will use NiMH batteries instead of lithium ion batteries. The only thing we know about the new car is that it will take some styling cues from the wedge-shaped Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell car.

It will be priced below the current Civic Hybrid, and the hybrid powertrain will be a lighter and more compact redesign of the current IMA system. Honda aims for hybrids to make up for 10% of its global car sales by 2012.

Audi RS8 confirmed to use twin turbo V10

Remember the Audi R8 prototype that burned to the ground? It was all part of the painful (for us to watch the R8 test cars burn down) engineering process that has let Audi finally announce this – the upcoming Audi RS8 will come with the RS6’s twin turbocharged V10.

Cooling for the twin turbocharged engine will be via design modifications that will provide extra cooling to the engine bay, including NACA roof air ducts for the turbos. NACA ducts get their name from its developer, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (which eventually ended up as NASA). This is not the first time Audi will be stuffing a turbocharged engine into the R8’s engine bay, as it has done it before with the Audi R8 V12 TDI, so there has been constant cooling know-how gained over time.

The 5.2 liter twin turbocharged FSI direct injection V10 in the RS6 puts out a constant 580 horses between 6,250rpm and 6,700rpm, and a collosal 650Nm of torque from a very low 1,500rpm all the way up to 6,250rpm. This is a very very scary engine indeed.

Autocar UK confirms that the RS8 has been signed off and approved for production, and we will be able to see some form of glimpse of it by Q2 2009.

Volkswagen Polo GTI launched in Malaysia

The Fiat Bravo GT has fresh new more higher powered competition now – Volkswagen Group Malaysia has launched the Volkswagen Polo GTI in Malaysia. While the above picture shows the 3-door version, we get the 5-door.

Powered by a 1.8 liter 20 valve (5 valve per cylinder) turbocharged inline-4 engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 0 to 100km/h sprint in the 1,164kg Polo GTI takes 8.2 seconds. The turbocharged engine is a familiar one as a variation of it has been used in many Volkswagen and Audi cars including the Mk4 Golf GTI. It produces 150 horsepower at 5,800rpm and a 220Nm of torque peaking at a low 1,950rpm, staying constant all the way up to 4,500rpm.

Safety features include ESP stability control, TCS traction control to reel in the wheelspin, and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), which brakes an individual driven wheel when the ABS sensors detect the wheel is slipping so that power is transmitted to the wheel with better traction. EDL functions at speeds up to 40km/h. These three systems work together to ensure you do not get into trouble with the Polo GTI. You’ve got 4 airbags – front and side.

Wheels are 16 inch wrapped with 205/45R16 tyres – this means the CrossPolo’s wheels are even bigger, but I’m sure Volkswagen engineers have packaged this particular wheel and tyre size to work well with the rest of the suspension and chassis parameters.

SEAT Bocanegra Concept

SEAT Bocanegra Concept

The SEAT Bocanegra Concept car was a 3-door hatchback unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. It previewed the recently unveiled fourth generation SEAT Ibiza production car, but unliked the 5-door Ibiza hatch, the Bocanegra Concept was a 3-door and SEAT called it a “SportCoupe”.

The word Bocanegra means “black mouth” in Spanish, and probably refers to the blackened front face of the SEAT Bocanegra Concept. This blackened area is actually a semi-transparent Perspex acrylic sheet which extends up to the two headlamps, also acting as covers for the car’s LED headlamps.

The sleek side profile is enhanced by large 19″ alloy wheels wrapped with low-profile 235/35R19 tyres. Matching the car’s sporty looks is a 1.4 liter TSI engine mated to a 7-speed DSG under its hood.

SEAT unveils 4th generation SEAT Ibiza

New SEAT Ibiza

The new fourth generation SEAT Ibiza was previewed as the SEAT Bocanegra Concept at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, a sleek concept car done up in red and black. It’s not been very long after Geneva, but we can now have a look at the production 4th gen Ibiza, which looks much more toned down.

The new Ibiza is longer at 4050mm compared to the 3rd gen’s 3970mm length. It also has a longer wheelbase and wider track, so it also effectively previews the chassis of the next generation Polo. Under its hood are a family of small modern Volkswagen engines including a 1.2 liter 3 cylinder petrol. SEAT’s press release quotes a 102 PS normally aspirated 1.6 liter as being one of the options, probably as a cost-cutting feature instead of using the more advanced 122 PS 1.4 liter single turbo TSI.

I’m sure alot of people will hope to see the more aggressive styling of the SEAT Bocanegra Concept return with the tuned up FR and Cupra versions of the Ibiza.

We will have to wait until the 2008 Madrid Motor Show for the full details and specifications of the new 4th gen SEAT Ibiza, but for the moment enjoy more photos and a video after the jump.

New VTi engine for CKD Peugeot 407

Malaysian Peugeot franchiseholder Nasim Sdn Bhd has revealed more details on the new locally assembled Peugeot 407 set to make its debut in Malaysia soon.

We saw an initial list of specifications slightly more than a month ago listing goodies like Xenon HID headlamps, and a premium 240 watt JBL 8.1 sound system with boot-mounted subwoofer, electric front seats. These are all unconfirmed except for the HID lamps and 17 inch wheels.

Nasim now reveals that the 407 will get a new engine with Peugeot’s VTi variable valve timing. The CBU model offered here comes with an EW10J4 engine without these features, putting out 137 horsepower at 6,000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 4,100rpm.

The new car will come with the EW10A engine, putting out 140 PS and an impressive 200Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, one of the highest torque figures around for a non-performance 2.0 liter engine. The engine will be mated to a revised gearbox.

The CKD Peugeot 407 will be launched next month and can already be booked now with a RM1,000 booking fee. Nasim Sdn Bhd already has almost 200 bookings for the car to date.
