Four new BMW EfficientDynamics turbodiesel models now here in Malaysia!

BMW EfficientDynamicsBMW have launched four new diesel models here in Malaysia, complementing the existing X5 xDrive30d model. The four are the BMW 320d Sports, the BMW 520d Sports Edition, the BMW X3 xDrive20d Executive Edition and finally the flagship BMW 730Ld, which also so happens to be the cheapest F02 7-Series available in Malaysia.

bmw-320d-sports-1

The BMW 320d Sports is only RM7,000 more expensive than the BMW 320i. It’s also the 3-Series Sedan with the most torque, save for the 335i Individual and the M3 Sedan. With 177hp and 350Nm, the 320d outshines the 320i’s 156hp and 200Nm of torque. Thanks to that 0 to 100km/h acceleration time is down from the 320i’s 9.8 seconds to 8 seconds in the 320d Sports. Nearly 2 seconds is a big difference in acceleration feel.

bmw-320d-sports-2

The Sports suffix means that it has the full M-Sport kit – bodykit, seats, aluminium interior trim, 320i Sports wheels, and the M-Sport suspension bits. But it doesn’t have iDrive though, so for that you’ll have to go for the 323i and above variants. The 320d Sports consumes just 6.0 litres of diesel per 100km on an average driving cycle and if you’re on long distance trips it should be even better.

bmw-520d-1

The BMW 520d Sports Edition has the same engine as the 320d Sports – a 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine with 177 horsepower and 350Nm of torque. 0 to 100km/h takes a little more time at 8.4 seconds because it is a larger car.

bmw-520d-2

The term Sports Edition means it’s sort of in between a regular 5 and a 5 M-Sport. You have the M-Sport bodykit, M-Sport wheels, M-Sport steering, but no M-Sport seats and M-Sport suspension. So it’s going to be more of a comfort cruiser with the aesthetic go-fast bits tacked on. Like all 5-Series save for the non-SE 523i, you get the latest version of iDrive with the internal hard drive storage and etc.

bmw-diesel-tailpipes

Both the 320d Sports and 520d Sports have exhaust tips that points downwards. All the non-M-Sport E39 5-Series used to have this exhaust but the difference is it was hidden behind the bumper, out of sight. But with the M-Sport kits on both the 3 and 5 of this current generation, the bumpers show off the exhaust tailpipe in full glory.

The reason for this is due to the rules set by the German HQ. We get Euro 3 versions of these engines due to our diesel quality which is only just Euro 2M and not the Euro 4/5 capable diesel available in Europe, and amongst the various differences is the fact that the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) has been removed because of the Euro 2M sulphur levels.

For cars without DPF filters, the instruction is to have the tailpipe facing the road, so that the particulates are channeled towards the ground instead of straight out. For owners, if you don’t like the look you can probably get that fixed at JFA in Sunway or something or something. Other than that, BMW says they’ve done adequate testing and the engine should run fine on our Euro 2M fuel, at least within the warranty period.

730d-1

The flagship is of course the 730d long wheelbase with the new aluminium crankcase 6-cylinder diesel engine. This is a new generation diesel engine that I had the opportunity to try out matched with a manual gearbox when it was installed in a 330d in Germany. In Malaysia installed in the F02 7-Series, its mated to a ZF 6-speed automatic.

730d-3

It’s got 245 horsepower and 540Nm of torque, but consumes 6.9 litres per 100km. The engine felt really amazing in the 330d – unlike other diesel engines its powerband did not taper off at the higher ends of the rev range, which shows somehow with this new generation BMW has managed to control the auto-ignition combustion quite well at high revs. The 7-Series is the only car in Malaysia with this new engine, but the X5 xDrive30d will probably be getting this engine too when its time for it to be facelifted.

730d-idrive

Looking at the 730d at the launch also gave us a sneak peek at changes to the 7-Series offerings when it comes to the 2010 model year here in Malaysia. The rear passengers of all 7-Series variants will now get a proper full-fledged iDrive controller, including this new 730d. Previously, rear passenger iDrive was only available on the 750i. The 740i had the dual rear screens but you had to control it with a remote control, and the user interface was a little limited on features. Now with full rear iDrive on all models, the ceiling air conditioning vents have been removed as part of the spec adjustment, presumably so the same price can be offered.

730d-2

Removing the ceiling air conditioning vents is probably good as the option adds a little box in the boot that intrudes into the bootspace which I initially thought was a subwoofer of some kind, but is in fact the aircond compressor. This means 2010 model cars will have more boot space. I don’t think people will miss the ceiling aircond much as there is still the B-pillar and center console air conditioning.

730d-interior

The following are the prices for the new diesel models:

BMW 320d Sports – RM 255,800.00
BMW 520d Sports Edition – RM 379,800.00
BMW X3 xDrive20d Executive Edition – RM 333,800.00
BMW 730Ld – RM 698,800.00

They include BMW Service Inclusive + Repair for 3 years or 60,000km. Look after the jump for hi-res photos of the three sedans. I kind of missed the X3 that was on display.

Do you prefer the Impreza hatchback or sedan?

subaru-impreza-hatch

The latest model Subaru Impreza has been in our market for quite sometime now, but I don’t know about you but I have yet to see one on our road.

Perhaps I’ve just been in the wrong places at the wrong times. The previous generations on the other hand can be seen nearly once a day and it’s a joy to hear it burbling past, thanks to its turbocharged boxer engine.

subaru-impreza-sedan

The Subaru Imprezas that we get here in Malaysia is unique in the sense that they are European spec models brought in from Europe instead of the JDM models that the grey importers bring in. This means no speed limit!

But I’m just curious on why has the takeup of the Impreza been slow compared to its arch-rival the Lancer Evolution? Is it because the Impreza has traditionally been viewed as a hot rally-going sedan instead of its current hatchback incarnation?

There are of course sedan versions of the car. Personally what do you think – do you prefer the sedan variant of the Impreza WRX or the hatchback version? Do vote above and share your opinion in the comments section – I’m pretty sure the people from Motor Image are watching.

EV-N Concept: Honda’s retro-styled electric car

honda-ev-n-concept-1

Honda N360The Honda EV-N Concept is surprisingly retro-styled in a sea of very futuristic Honda concepts being released in the past 2 to 3 years. Like you can probably expect from its name, the EV-N Concept is an electric car, though for the moment Honda has not released any details on its motor and battery specifications. It’s probably got a pretty short range though, designed to be used for short commutes in cities like Tokyo.

After you reach your destination and park but you’re feeling a little lazy, you can take out one of the U3-X Segway-like unicycles which is smartly strapped to the passenger door. At first I thought it was some really big and hardcore speaker system or something.

honda-ev-n-concept-2

The EV-N Concept is part of a larger display called the “HELLO!” (Honda Electric mobility Loop) display, where Honda will be showcasing a total “ecosystem” of mobility products. You have products that supply electricity, vehicles that run on electricity and products with innovative electronic technologies.

There will be solar panels that supply electricity and battery electric vehicles that emit zero emissions in use. The HELLO showcase is pretty much a preview of the potential of a low-carbon society of the future of course centered around Honda products. In addition, each HELLO! vehicle features communication technologies that showcase fun ways in which mobility devices can interact with people and society.

Look after the jump more shots of the Honda EV-N Concept.

Tokyo: Honda Skydeck MPV with scissor doors!

Honda-Skydeck-Concept

Honda’s new SKYDECK concept can seat 6 people in a three-row passenger configuration (2+2+2). Honda’s last 6-seater was the Honda Edix which has now been phased out, but that MPV had its 6 seats in a two row configuration, similiar to what Fiat did for their Multipla.

The styling cues are quite obviously inspired by the CR-Z, which leads me to believe this kind of look might become quite commonplace on future Hondas. The front doors have a scissor hinge like a Lamborghini while the rear door is of the rearward-sliding variety. The powertrain is of course a hybrid but no further details have been revealed.

More will probably be disclosed at the Tokyo show next month, so stay tuned, but for now you can look after the jump for hi-res images.

Tokyo Motorshow’s Honda CR-Z Concept 2009 very close to production version

honda-cr-z-concept-2009-1

Honda will be showing various automobiles at the Tokyo Motorshow next month. Being their home turf and an Asian country, I must say the concept, near-production and production cars to be shown are definitely more interesting to us as an ASEAN country as they would be the most relevant to production cars that we’ll receive in the future.

The most exciting is probably the new Honda CR-Z Concept 2009, which is the most close-to-production concept version of the upcoming CR-Z sports car so far. No technical details have been revealed on the car so far, but I do have some nice high-resolution photos for you showing a very production-ready exterior and interior.

honda-cr-z-concept-2009-2

Word is that the CR-Z will get a 1.5 litre version of Honda’s IMA Hybrid system (the Civic and Insight use 1.3 IMA hybrid systems) and high on the wishlist of speculators so far is a 6-speed manual transmission, which is rare in a typical hybrid car where you usually see CVT and e-CVT transmissions.

Look after the jump for a nice hi-res gallery of the new CR-Z!

Mazda to present SKY engines and transmissions at Tokyo Motorshow next month!

mazda-sky-engines

Mazda will be showcasing its next generation petrol and diesel engines at the Tokyo Motorshow next month. The engines are called the SKY-G and the SKY-D respectively for the petrol and diesel versions.

The SKY-G engine is a 2.0 litre unit with direct injection and an improved variable valve timing system which gives it a 15% fuel economy and torque advantage over the current MZR engine in the Mazda 3 2.0 Sport. Direct injection was previously found only on the turbocharged 2.3 litre engine but is now available in the ‘regular’ engines.

The Mazda SKY-D engine is a 2.2 litre unit that offers fuel economy of approximately 20% better than the current 2.2 litre diesel engine. It features a newly designed engine block that reduces mechanical friction to the level of a gasoline engine. Other features include piezo injectors and a two-stage turbocharger. It doesn’t sound like its a twin-turbo setup, but instead is probably a variable geometry turbocharger.

Mazda SKY-DriveFinally, there’s a new transmission to be unveiled. After all, an engine can only do so much – the transmission plays a big factor in minimizing transmission losses and offering an optimum gearing setup for both fuel economy and power. Mazda will be premiering the Mazda SKY-Drive automatic transmission.

It’s a 6-speed automatic with a complete redesign that significantly reduces mechanical friction, a revised torque converter and clutch with minimized slip, and an optimized lock-up mechanism. Mazda says the transmission shifts faster and provides a DCT-like feel to it, but words can only say so much – a test drive will say it all!

The Tokyo show exhibit will also feature the Mazda Kiyora concept car that was shown last year. Under the Kiyora’s hood will be a 1.3 litre version of the SKY-G engine mated to a SKY-Drive 6-speed auto. Mazda claims this combination together with technologies such as the i-stop idling stop system and regenerative braking will allow the Kiyora to travel 32km per litre of fuel on the Japanese 10-15 mode test cycle.

Who are these Litespeed guys anyway?

litespeedlogo

I found an interesting Nino Judge interview on racinginside.com last night. You can read the full interview by clicking this link but below are some key relevant interesting points that were revealed. The Lotus F1 Team is backed by Tune, Naza and Litespeed and I know alot of you are wondering who Litespeed are.

  • Nino Judge was an R&D engineer at the old Team Lotus which has since quit racing. The new team name is Lotus F1 Team, not Team Lotus.
  • He was the first person to make flow visualisation of sub sonic wings using Shear sensitive liquid crystals work, which is now a standard tool used by all F1 teams.

The Litespeed name first cropped up on this site when it was revealed that they submitted an F1 team entry application under the name Lotus, which sparked some controversy later as Lotus released a statement that they had nothing to do with this “Lotus” team and are not very happy with their name being used like that.

Of course later this has all been “settled” as Proton has agreed to license the Lotus name to the Litespeed F1 team, which is one and the same as Lotus F1 Team and the 1Malaysia F1 Team that keeps getting mentioned in the local media.

In another piece of news, Tune’s Datuk Kamarudin Meranun says the team will be able to make money in the first year! They seem very confident in the so-called Midas touch that the Tune Group has, claiming that this is what they have always done with their other ventures. The proposed stakeholding right now is 55:35:10 between Tune, SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin (in his personal capacity, not Naza’s), and Litespeed. It was originally 60:40 when Litespeed was not in the picture.

Main revenue drivers will be sponsorship, merchandise sales, and Formula One Management profit sharing. Tony Fernandes pointed out that the Lotus brand can be monetised in many ways and shared that there was one F1 brand that raked in £150mil worth of T-shirts sales.

Litespeed F3 Team

The Lotus F1 Team put out a press ad in the sports section of The Star yesterday listing various positions to be filled in the team. The list is quite extensive and all you have to do is email your CV and cover letter to 1MalaysiaHR@lotusf1team.com.

A quick glimpse at lotusf1team.com shows it doesn’t really have much content yet. The domain lists ex-Lotus employee and Litespeed co-founder Nino Singh Judge as the admin and technical contact.

  • IT – Head of Information Technology, CAD Manager, Senior IT Engineer, Race IT Engineer, Test IT Engineer, IT Technician

It’s not really clear at the moment whether all jobs are available immediately. I have a feeling alot of the positions would probably already be filled by Litespeed F3 engineers. The Aerodynamics and Gearbox department will probably have to deal with FondTech and Xtrac respectively as when the team was announced, they were mentioned as suppliers to the team. Cosworth will be supplying the engine. I think what Malaysian can immediately look out for are the Marketing & PR, Finance, HR and Legal departments.

Aston Martin no longer coolest brand in the UK?

Aston Martin Cygnet
Does this look cool to you?

What’s cooler than an Aston Martin? An iPhone. Probably no thanks to James Bond movies’ portrayal of the Aston Martin being the ultimate playboy spy’s car, the brand has sat at the top of the annual UK CoolBrands survey for three years consequetively, until this year where it has been displaced by the iPhone.

The survey polled 2,500 voters for a shortlist of cool brands and the final twenty were voted on by a panel of judges including DJ Edith Bowman and Adam & Eve founding partner James Murphy. No other carmaker made the seemingly very male-oriented top 10 list, but Ferrari managed to come in at 15th place.

Look after the jump for the top 20 list.

Lotus F1 racer undergoing wind-tunnel testing

litespeed-f3
Litespeed’s F3 race car

Some very interesting details on the progress of the Lotus F1 team was revealed on ESPN Star’s Race Day TV show by team principal Tony Fernandes. According to Tony, the Malaysian team has started developing its Formula 1 racer, and that the single seater is in its wind tunnel testing stage. When the team was first announced, they said aerodynamics would be supplied by FondTech, so that’s where the car must be now.

So yes, a racecar exists, and I will bet it will look nothing like the rainbow-coloured car that we saw the Prime Minister hold up when he made the announcement about the 1Malaysia F1 Team. It’s too sponsor-unfriendly – the logos would be lost in the sea of colours.

The car will be ready for circuit testing sometime in February 2010. Testing will be conducted at the SIC. The car will use the “default” engine supplied by Cosworth. Litespeed will work on the chassis.
