Taking on challenges at the Nurburgring with Castrol EDGE

Last year, Khairul Izwan was among very few lucky motoring enthusiasts who got the chance to experience the Nurburgring, or also known as the “Green Hell” with a BMW M3 which pumps out 414 hp and 400 Nm of torque from its 4.0 litre V8 power house. “Awesome” was an understatement when Khairul shared his ultimate driving experience.

This year, Castrol Malaysia is bringing back the Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring: The Sequel, in which one “strong” Malaysian will be flown to the legendary track in an all-expense-paid driving experience of a lifetime. Before that happens, let’s take a moment and talk about the challenges of driving a powerful piece of machine such as the BMW M3 at one of the world’s most demanding tracks.

The 22.8 kilometer-long Nurburgring is widely considered as the most challenging track in the world with up to 160 corners. The track is used for both motorsport and for vehicle testing by many vehicle manufacturers. These car manufacturers rely on the track’s various characteristics which include high speed straights and turns, slow to medium speed corners and undulations to test the driveability of their cars.

Due to the high G-forces and the extreme pressures exerted to various parts of the car such as the suspension, the transmission and most critically the engine, driving at the Nurburgring takes a huge toll on the car and on the driver as well. Compared to other tracks, the Nurburgring has more and longer straights for one to negotiate. At such straight sections of the track, the car will be spending a lot of time at its top speed, with the driver’s foot on the accelerator pedal as though his or her life is dependent on it

This means that during this time, the engine, which in this case is a 4.0 liter V8 will be working at its rev limits for a longer time. Imagine driving an M3 at up to 8,000 revs for approximately 30 seconds? You can hear the beautiful engine note as the engine is working very hard to deliver all of its horsepower to the rear wheels! (minus the transmission loss of course).

In such gruelling conditions, the choice of engine oil is crucial, whereby the oil acts as a lubricant for the moving parts of the engine. At such extreme engine speeds, the engine is running at high temperature and the oil has to continuously adapt and respond to the engine’s needs.

The BMW M3 which was used at the Nurburgring last year had Castrol EDGE in its engine, allowing the engine to consistently maintain its reliability and maximise performance. Certain parts of the engine such as the cam and its followers can receive pressure of up to 10,000 kilograms per square cm and that is equivalent to the pressure of being approximately 100,000 meters below sea level!

Car Clubs to battle each other out at the Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring: The Sequel Car Club Contest!

Similar to the first Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring challenge Castrol Malaysia organised last year, the Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring: The Sequel will see the participation of local car clubs in a car club-specific contest of the challenge yet again.

The driver of the campaign is the new and improved Castrol EDGE which is now engineered with Titanium Fluid Strength Technology™ which makes it the strongest and most advanced performance oil from Castrol. Something special will be going on this weekend at the Auto Bavaria Sg. Besi branch! Leica, the famous German optics company that has been established since 1913 will be teaming up with the BMW authorized dealer for a unique showroom experience.

The event which is open to public will showcase a special Leica studio whereby visitors can get their photographs taken with a BMW, and get it printed on the spot. These photographs will be taken with Leica’s top of the line cameras which can cost approximately RM120,000.

Not only that, there will also be special promotions for selected BMW models, for both new and pre-registered units in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations. Castrol has launched the ‘Hunt for the Strongest’ mobile app game as the second stage of its Castrol EDGE ‘Experience the Strongest’ campaign. Contestants will have to push themselves to the limit for a chance to win the grand prize of an all-expense paid trip to Poland next year to watch EURO 2012 live.

The ‘Experience the Strongest’ consumer campaign rolled out in early October 2011 through an innovative multi-platform campaign designed to inspire confidence in Malaysians to find their own strength and be the strongest they can be.

The campaign is driven by the new and improved Castrol EDGE, now engineered with Titanium Fluid Strength Technology, making it the strongest and most advanced performance oil yet from Castrol. Contestants will start out as the ‘hunter’ for the missing Elements, which will sporadically appear at different locations around Malaysia. However, upon capturing it, they immediately become the ‘hunted’ as they run from the other hunters trying to steal the Elements. If they manage to outrun the other hunters after a period of 15 minutes, the Titanium Fluid Strength Technology Element will be stored as permanent Strength points.

To prevent the other hunters from snatching the Elements away within the 15-minute time period, one can actually locate any new Castrol EDGE engineered with Titanium Fluid Strength Technology pack and scan the pack barcode – doing so automatically confirms the capture of the Element immediately and instantly stores it as permanent Strength points. Come to the PETRONAS Motorsports Carnival from the 15th to the 23th of October 2011, 10am to 10pm at the KLCC outdoor area. There are some exciting activities for the whole family during the carnival such as Augmented Reality games, bike stunts, trivia, daily performances by local acts/artistes and many more. For fans, there will also be a chance to meet Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies at the PETRONAS Motorsports Carnival on the 19th of October 2011. Both riders will make an appearance at 6 PM, so it would be best to go there by 5:30 PM.

Goodyear Asymmetric 2 wins Auto Express Big Tyre Test

Goodyear’s latest entry in the Ultra High Performance (UHP) category, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (A2), has continued its predecessor’s award winning form. The A2 was selected as the number one tyre in the recent Auto Express Big Tyre Test 2011, organised by prominent UK mag Auto Express (AE). The A2 also received a “Best Buy 2011” endorsement from the rag.

In Asia, Goodyear’s latest pride and joy was officially launched three months ago in Hua Hin, Thailand. The flagship was launched together with the mid range performance tyre Eagle F1 Directional 5. We were part of this event held at the Kaeng Krachan Circuit, click here to read our report.

AE tested ten leading tyres at Bridgestone’s test facility in Aprilia, south of Rome. Each manufacturer sent 10 tyres for test, eight to be used for track testing and two for rolling resistance. Fitted on the VW Golf GTI, they tested the rubber on nine disciplines including wet and dry braking, handling and cornering, straight and curved aquaplaning, rolling resistance and noise. The mag also bought two sets of tyres at random for comparison.

The Goodyear ranked highly in the majority of tests. What impressed AE the most was the A2’s ability in the dry weather conditions – while it’s expected that Goodyear does well in the wet, its ability in the dry was a surprise. The overall verdict was that the A2, recently chosen as the OE tyre for the new Mercedes CLS, is an impressive all-rounder.

Did you enjoy our just concluded PETRONAS Travel Safe & Save series? If you have no idea what it is, where have you been? PETRONAS Saya Suka Malaysia Videos on Facebook

What makes Malaysia Malaysia? What do Malaysians love about their country? Is it the nasi lemak? Mum’s home cooking? The wonderful “Muhibbah” spirit amongst the races? Hanging out with friends over “teh tarik”? The “tapir”? The orang utan? Or is it the “scientifically proven” fact that Malaysia has the prettiest girls in the world?

These were some of the creative answers from Malaysians captured in video in a heart-stirring and entertaining campaign.

To celebrate the spirit of Hari Merdeka amongst Malaysians, PETRONAS has created a unique online platform for Malaysians to express their feelings of pride and joy. Titled “PETRONAS Saya Suka Malaysia” (a play on the “like” button in Facebook) this contest was devised and executed by Zenith Media and runs from 23 August to 12 September 2011. Participation is simple: Malaysians are asked “what do they love about Malaysia” and the videos of their answers will be available for all to watch and vote.The top five videos with the highest votes will each receive RM5,000.

The rakyat was invited to email their videos, or to be present at certain locations where celebrities were present with camera crews to conduct interviews. Celebrities include famous actress Cheryl Samad, renowned local Chinese DJ K.K. Wong, and actor/comedian/singer Indi Nadarajah.

The response to the contest has been extraordinary: in 1 week, about 300 individual videos are available online at the PETRONAS Saya Suka Malaysia tab on Facebook. Over 600,000 views of these pages in less than 1 week, coupled with over 15,000 new fans for PETRONAS means that the simplicity of PETRONAS Saya Suka Malaysia has touched the hearts of many Malaysians. The term Saya Suka Malaysia is also spontaneously gaining ground on Twitter, and has become a popular hashtag, indicating that the concept has connected with the consumer. You can also tweet your views on what you love about Malaysia, just add the hash tag #sayasukamalaysia.
