Ford to prove its Ecoboost V6 engine in Baja 1000 race

To prove that its 3.5-litre Ecoboost is more than enough engine in the F-150 truck and that it’s durable, Ford will give the Ecoboost its racing debut at the famous Baja 1000 desert race this November. The twin turbo, direct injection engine will be in stock condition (said to have been selected randomly off the line from Cleveland Engine Plant), and the machine is this cool F-150 you see here.

“The engine going into our race truck for the Baja 1000 is the same engine going into the 2011 Ford F-150 that customers can purchase starting next year,” said chief engineer Eric Kuehn. “No special blocks or structural upgrades. We are fully confident that because of the strict testing the 3.5-litre EcoBoost truck engines underwent before we started manufacturing, it will take anything the desert can dish out.”

Ford will compete in full-size stock class, which includes competitors with unlimited V8 engines. For safety, a full roll cage is added to each truck. Also allowed for competition are modifications to the suspension, tyres and wheels.

Baja is part of a “torture test program” by Ford to convince customers that its 365 hp/570 Nm Ecoboost V6 is a class leading engine. Visitors to Ford’s US website can see a poor engine enduring thousands of miles on the dynamometer and in the lab to ensure 150,000-mile durability (240,000 km) for the most demanding F-150 customer.

The site will also show a series of web-based documentaries hosted and narrated by Mike Rowe of the Discovery Channel series Dirty Jobs. The “jobs” include towing a pair of Sprint Cup Ford Fusions for 24 hours around a 1.5-mile oval track and hauling timber in Oregon.

2012 Ford Focus ST with 247 bhp to debut at Paris show

The focus on Ford’s stand at the upcoming Paris Motor Show will be the third-generation Focus. Although the Blue Oval has already wheeled out its C-segment global car earlier this year in Detroit, this will be the “formal launch” and the first time that the complete line-up of three “production-ready” bodystyles (five-door hatch, sedan and wagon) will be displayed together. Will we see a slightly different car from the Detroit showstar? September 30 is the date.

The world premiering star of the cast will no doubt be the Focus ST, which is dubbed the “global performance version” of the new Focus. The hot hatchback will be on sale in early 2012, while the rest of the range will debut in Europe and North America by early 2011.

What we know now about the Focus ST is that the range topper (for now) will come with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine with 247 bhp (250 PS) and “an addictive sound”. Power wise, this puts the ST on equal footing with the Renaultsport Megane 250 and higher than the 223 bhp five-cylinder car it replaces. A six-speed manual is almost a certainty, but will the ST come with a dual-clutch Powershift option?

The old ST was quite subtle in looks, but this new car has gone the other way. A huge “mouth” takes centrestage up front while the rear features a central twin exhaust that’s interestingly shaped. This special launch colour is dramatically called Tangerine Scream.

Coolest truck in the world gets “digital mud” graphics

This writer isn’t the biggest fans of pick-up trucks, but I can’t deny the coolness of the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. Remember those monster trucks on TV long, long time ago? Here’s one you can own and drive (sadly, only if you’re in the USA), with a 411 bhp 6.2-litre V8 under the hood and a new for 2011 four-door SuperCrew body. There’s now an optional “digital mud” graphic pack too!

The pack consists of matte black graphics – including the F-150 SVT Raptor logo that runs along the hood. The digital mud, a combination of matte and glossy black paint, is splashed across the box side, meant to replicate mud that would be thrown from the truck’s tyres when off road.

“For off-roaders, mud on their truck is a badge of honor. Owners like to show what they have experienced with the amount of mud on their truck. But they also are proud of the condition their truck is in. Digital mud provides the best of both worlds, so even when the truck is clean, it still shows off its true nature,” said Bruce Williams, F-150 SVT Raptor designer.

“When I started looking at off-road racing history for inspiration, I noticed that a lot of Ford Broncos from the 1970s were running matte black hoods to reduce the glare. So it’s a protective graphic that has a functional benefit and ties in with our racing heritage,” he added.

GPS navigation unit integrated into rear view mirror

This is something quite interesting – a Garmin satellite navigation unit that’s integrated into the side of a rear view mirror, offered by Ford to any Ford vehicle except for the Ranger and Ka 2009. GPS instructions are displayed on the touch screen 3.5 inch display integrated into the rear view mirror. The whole system is called the MirrorNavi system and it clips onto your existing rear view mirror. It costs £299 plus local dealer fitting charges in the UK.

Ford Fiesta 1.4 and 1.6 Ti-VCT Test Drive Review

By now, many urban dwelling Malaysians and readers of this blog would have heard of or have seen the new Ford Fiesta. Ford distributor Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) started drumming up awareness very early for this upcoming model, and as of today have received around 500 bookings, which is a decent sum.

The Fiesta should have its official launch in October but we have driven it in Thailand, where it rolls off the AutoAlliance plant alongside the Mazda2. We reckon that the Fiesta is a very impressive package, so much so that the observations you read after the jump are from a potential buyer – I really can see myself happy with one of these!

Bernie Ecclestone wants Aussie V8 Supercars for Singapore GP support race

If you’ve ever dreamt of hearing the growl of a 5.0 L Ford “Boss 302″ SVO V8 in South East Asia, it might be closer than you think. Bernie Ecclestone is trying to get the Australian V8 Supercar Series to conduct a support race at the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix.

This comes after news that Martin Whitaker, who is CEO of the Aussie series, told an Australian publication “He (Ecclestone) would love to have us there in an earlier timeslot. It’s better for the spectators, better for the city and puts an extra four hours on to the show as far as Singapore is concerned”.

However, there is the problem of clashing television rights of V8 (who are under Channel 7) and F1 (Network Ten) in Australia. Whitaker went on to say that the TV issue is something that they have to work on, before the Singapore deal is confirmed. Ongoing negotiations also means that the release of the 2011 calendar for the Aussie series will be delayed.

The race series itself is a competition between cars based on the Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore. Based on three categories, class A consists of V8 cars employing either the 5.0 L Ford “Boss 302″ SVO or the 5.0 L Chevrolet small block race-engine producing over 600 horses in cars that weigh a minimum of 1355kgs.

Most of the races take place in different states in Australia, with added legs in New Zealand, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. Thus it would be an added variety of motorsport in the region, if this race series takes off in the region.

Ford and Mazda invest $350 million in Rayong plant for next generation pick-up trucks

Auto Alliance Thailand, a joint venture between Mazda Motor Corp and Ford Motor Co, have announced that they will be investing US$350 million in its pickup truck plant to prepare for the production of next generation pick-up trucks. This is likely the next generation Ranger/Fighter.

Production of the redesigned pick-up trucks is expected to start sometime mid-2011, according to Ford. The factory will be retooled and upgraded for the production of the pick up trucks. The new investment would mean that since 1995, both companies have invested about US$1.85 billion in the AutoAlliance Thailand facility.

Models produced by the AutoAlliance factory are exported to more than 130 markets around the world. This includes the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta models, produced at the Rayong plant, exported to other markets including Malaysia (we’ll get it sometime soon). The JV also celebrated 1 million units produced in July 1997.

One question that we have in mind is whether the new Ranger/Fighter will follow the One Ford plan, where Ford will develop global models and then tailor them to different markets via equipment instead of market-specific models. Our current generation Ranger is quite different from the Ranger in the US, which is larger. The next generation Ford Focus is one example of a car that has been ‘unified’ under the One Ford plan.

Ford Focus ST discontinued, it’s too dirty for Europe!

Let’s make the Honda Civic Type R funeral a joint one, as the Ford Focus ST has just joined the hot hatchback casualty list for not being clean enough for Europe. Like the British built Honda’s high revving 2.0-litre four pot, the Ford’s 2.5-litre turbo five-cylinder does not meet Euro 5 emission standards, which will come into force for all new cars in next year.

According to Autocar UK, who broke the news, other engines that are facing the chop for the same reason includes Alfa’s tuneful 3.2-litre V6, the Mazda RX-8′s rotary engine and the VW Group’s 5.0-litre V10 TDI engine. This will affect models like the Alfa Brera/Spider and the VW Touareg. I remember Wald selling the V10 TDI Touareg here a couple of years ago.

The Focus ST, which sits below the Focus RS in pecking order, will get a new engine at the upcoming Paris show. It’s likely that Ford will drop in a modern direct injection four-cylinder Ecoboost in there.

2011 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 is mightier than ever

The Ford Harley Davidson F-150 is a dream truck for many, combining the capability of America’s most popular truck with the branding of Harley-Davidson. In this 2011 edition, a new 6.2-litre V8 from the F-150 SVT Raptor makes it the most powerful Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 ever offered. The big V8 delivers 411 hp, 588 Nm of torque and maximum trailer tow capacity of 9,300 pounds.

The 2011 Ford-HD truck has a new front fascia and chrome grille, Harley-Davidson satin chrome badges, 22-inch Euroflange forged wheels enveloped in low profile performance tyres and the choice of Tuxedo Black or Ingot Silver paint. New graphics are also added to the hood and body side which feature dimensional satin chrome Harley-Davidson lettering. The graphics are reminiscent of the “speed scallops” used on hot rods.

The cabin is in Tuxedo Black with engine turned finishing on door scuff plates and console lid. Leather seats come with accent color inserts and a unique badge. New standard content for 2011 includes the touch screen voice-activated navigation, a 4.2-inch “productivity screen” (multi info trip computer), power moonroof and remote start system.

Ford Escape gets another minor facelift and new 4X2 model

It’s been just over a year since the Ford Escape got its last refresh in June 2009 which saw the SUV getting a trademark Ford three-bar chrome grille.

With this latest refresh (latest in a list of many!), Ford has replaced the chrome grille with a black mesh grille together with a new front bumper design.

There are now two variants of the Ford Escape. The 4X4 model continues to be priced at RM139,888 OTR with insurance but there is now a new Ford Escape 2.3L 2WD XLS model priced at just RM118,888 OTR with insurance – that’s an SUV with a price that’s cheaper than a Ford Focus TDCi.

Other than the 4X4 system being omitted in the XLS model, it also comes with only two front airbags instead of four airbags in the 4X4 Escape XLT. It is also missing the cruise control found in the 4X4. The sound system in the 4X2 is also less specced – only 4 speakers versus 6 speakers and a single CD slot instead of a 6-CD changer. Seats are fabric in the 4X2 compared to leather in the 4X4.

Both models use a 2.3 litre inline-4 engine making 157 PS at 6,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4,000rpm – this is up from the 146 PS and 196Nm found in the 2009 model. But it’s still rather weak numbers for a 2.3 litre engine, must be a very non-aggressive tune.

Both models are CBU from the Philippines and come with a 3 year warranty as well as a 3 year free maintenance package. Look after the jump for an embedded PDF brochure.
