Ford Fiesta Sport+ 1.6 Ti-VCT upgraded to 134 PS

Ford has launched a new limited edition Ford Fiesta Sport+ in Europe, which has its 1.6 litre Ti-VCT engine pumped up to 134 PS and 160Nm, up from the stock numbers of 120 PS and 152Nm. The extra power boosts 0 to 100km/h acceleration performance to 8.7 seconds down from 9.9 seconds.

Of course if this isn’t enough for you there’s always the Mountune kit for the Fiesta, which manages to squeeze out a few more horses and Newton meters, resulting in a peak of 140 PS and 170Nm, going up to 0 to 100km/h in just 7.9 seconds. The 140 PS kit maintains your Fiesta’s warranty in the UK, but if you don’t mind your powertrain warranty being voided there’s also a more aggressive new 155 PS and 180Nm kit which shaves the century sprint time down to 7.5 seconds.

The Fiesta Sport+ is the general European name – it will be called the Fiesta S1600 in the UK and the Fiesta Sport S in Germany. There already exists a Fiesta S1600 in the UK, but it only had a bodykit and a unique paintjob. I guess this update adds extra power into the mix as well.

8.7 seconds or even 7.9 seconds can be fun but is hardly thrilling – where’s the Fiesta ST? The chassis can definitely handle some turbocharged power, and throw in a manual transmission as well!

SDAC’s Experience Fiesta, Experience Hollywood contest – win a trip 5D4N trip to the American Idol!

The Ford Fiesta was quite prominently showcased in last year’s American Idol. There was even a segment where the top 12 finalists were given a chance to customize their own Fiestas to their own tastes with the help of designers. So far Ford has taken quite a fun approach to marketing the Fiesta which is in tune with its target audience and rather than just shove the car in your face with the USPs, we have things like the American Idol tie-up and the Ford Fiesta Movement in the US.

In Malaysia, we even had own own little Fiesta Movement which revolved around the Ford Fiesta in Malaysia Fan Page. And now we’ll be able to get a taste of this year’s American Idol as well, in SDAC’s Experience Fiesta, Experience Hollywood contest. Yes you got that right – Ford is currently having a contest where you stand a chance to win a trip to Hollywood for this year’s American Idol semi-final live show on a 5 Day 4 Night trip with accommodation and hotel/airport transfer in Los Angeles! There are a total of FIVE grand prizes! The contest runs from the 14th of February 2011 to the 31th of March 2011.

All you have to do is pay a visit to any SDAC Ford branch or Ford authorized dealer and test drive the Fiesta 1.6L Sport. Here’s where it gets interesting. Instead of just a normal test drive where the sales advisor prattles off the car’s features, Ford has actually prepared an interactive audio CD which will be played in the car and will guide you through the car’s features. After a 15 to 20 minute drive, you will actually be taught how to use the Voice Control feature to submit your contest entry via the mission center, which is basically a 1-800 toll-free number with an Interactive Voice Response you will call using the car’s Bluetooth hands-free system.

Just as a recap, the Fiesta 1.6L Sport has a 1.6 litre Ti-VCT engine, a 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, twin airbags, 16 inch alloy wheels, and of course, the Voice Control with Bluetooth feature which you will use to submit your contest entry. You can only join once so make your entry a good one – you will be prompted questions by the IVR system!

Existing Ford Fiesta owners and those who have booked the Fiesta but have yet to receive their cars are also eligible to join but you will still have to visit the Ford showroom to join and inform the sales advisors.

Ford Fiesta RS WRC takes maiden win in Sweden

It has certainly been a dream debut for the Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car, with the vehicle making for a 1-2-3 finish at the Rally Sweden last Sunday.

Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team’s Mikko Hirvonen – and Jarmo Lehtinen – won the opening round of the FIA World Rally Championship by just 6.5 secs from Mads Østberg and Jonas Andersson. The Castrol Edge-backed Ford Abu Dhabi team rounded off the podium spots with Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila third.

It was Ford’s first podium clean sweep since Rally Sweden in 2008, when Latvala claimed his maiden WRC win and was followed home by Hirvonen and Gigi Galli. Hirvonen’s victory, his 13th, makes him Ford’s most successful WRC driver, edging him ahead of former team-mate Marcus Grönholm.

Khalid Al Qassimi and Michael Orr, driving the team’s Fiesta RS WRC for the satellite Team Abu Dhabi squad, finished 10th. Seven-time world champion Sebastian Loeb finished in sixth place.

Ford Australia introduces new look Territory

Ford Australia has introduced its redesigned Territory SUV, which has been given an extensive visual update both inside and out.

There’s no mention of any mechanical changes to the Australian-designed-and-developed vehicle, which is also exported to South Africa and Thailand; looks like the 4.0 litre Barra inline-six pot – in various output configuration/tunes ranging from 244 hp up to 362 hp – continues on pretty much unchanged.

So it’s all to sight and touch, the changes, with kinetic design cues leading the way for the exterior. At the front, the vehicle feeatures an all-new tri-plane front-end architecture, and the new trapezoid-shaped main grille is one of the new Territory’s most noticeable updates.

Besides a redesigned front bumper and bonnet, slim-line projector headlamps are new, as are LED position lamps on the higher end variant. There SUV also gets a number of new 17- and 18-inch wheel designs to wear.

Moving rearwards, a new C-pillar design smooths the transition from front to rear. Other changes include new horizontal tail lamps and a new rear lift-gate applique, as well as a redesigned bumper and new lower-level valance panel.

Inside, the cabin gets new materials and colours, and among the items on the update list are a new instrument panel featuring an 8-inch touchscreen as well as a host of new functional storage solutions.

Ferrari changes reference of 2011 F1 car to F150th Italia

Seems that sometimes, if you make your point clearly everything can be resolved, and quickly at that. Helps somewhat if you go to court too. The Ford-Ferrari issue over the F150 nameplate looks to have been settled.

Ford had filed a lawsuit against Ferrari about the latter’s F150′s moniker for its 2011 Formula 1 car, stating that it was simply too close for comfort to its F-150 pickup, which is one of the best-selling vehicles in the US.

Reports have it that, faced with the lawsuit, Ferrari has backed down and announced that the racecar will now be called the F150th Italia, a name it says has been the official designation of the car all along. As of now, it will use the full description for the vehicle.

The Prancing Horse boys don’t really know why Ford is getting so hot under the collar over the name given to its racecar.

“Ferrari believes its own contender in the upcoming F1 Championship cannot be confused with any other types of commercially available vehicle whatsoever, nor can it give the impression that there is a link to another brand of road-going vehicle. Therefore it is very difficult to understand Ford’s viewpoint on the matter,” the company said in a statement.

Ford’s response was to say it never thought anyone would confuse its muscular truck with a F1 racecar, but the motive behind the action was about protecting the brand from being diluted. Think F-150 in any form, hyphen or not, think a particular truck and nothing else, not even a flash drive, that’s what the blue oval wants to retain.

Ford takes Ferrari to court over the use of F150 name

What’s in a name? Well, a lot, it seems, and if you thought the Lotus versus Lotus do has been the height of it this season, in comes another one to join the fray.

According to reports, Ford has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Detroit against Ferrari and its US sales arm over what it says is a violation of its trademarked F-150 name.

The Italian company seems to have stepped on Ford’s toes in naming its new Formula 1 car the F150, and the US automaker said the chosen name is too close to that of its pickup, hyphen or no hyphen. The blue oval has been using the F-150 moniker on its pickups since 1975, and trademarked it in 1995.

Ford is looking to block Ferrari from using the F150 name in the US, and this would include the importation, manufacturing or selling of any F150 products in the US.

The lawsuit also states that Ford wants Ferrari to surrender any profits earned in the US through the use of the F150 name. Elsewhere, in relation to the website Ferrari created for its racecar (www.ferrarif150.com), Ford is seeking US$100,000 in damages under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which prevents the creation of website domain names that can confuse users about products available.

Ford said in its suit that Ferrari is utilising the F150 moniker “in order to capitalise on and profit from the substantial goodwill that Ford has developed in the F-150 trademark, and in order to trade off of Ford’s famous and winning trademark.”

Earlier, Ferrari announced that its 2011 Formula 1 race car would be called the F150, named in reference to the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.

Ford Fiesta RS WRC car breaks cover in 2011-spec livery

The 2011-specification colour scheme which Ford’s Fiesta RS WRC car will wear for this year’s FIA World Rally Championship has been unveiled at the Autosport International 2011 show in Birmingham.

The official colours take over from the eye-catching blue and grey livery – designed by Ford of Europe’s design team – seen in the preview version of the car at the 2010 Paris Motor Show last September.

Team driver Mikko Hirvonen and Ford of Europe motorsport chief Gerard Quinn unveiled the new livery for the car, and Ford’s official WRC squad for 2011 also confirmed its new name and logo – it will compete as the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.

Title partner Abu Dhabi – which has been a team partner since 2007 – will have its distinctive branding featuring strongly in the new-look livery, and Emirati driver Khalid Al Qassimi will drive a third Fiesta RS WRC in support of team-mates Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala. The team will also be sponsored by Castrol, another partner since 2005. Branding for its Castrol EDGE range of advanced synthetic oils will feature prominently in the car’s livery.

The full specification of the car – which is developed by Ford of Europe and technical partner M-Sport, and based on the Fiesta S2000 rally car – will be available at the beginning of February. The 1.6 litre turbocharged, four-wheel drive vehicle will make its championship debut in Rally Sweden, the opening round of the series, on February 10-13.

Ford unveils C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid at NAIAS – both arrive in the US market in 2012, and Europe in 2013

It was with the arrival of the C-MAX to American shores that Ford also showed what plans it had for the platform – both in the US and Europe – with the unveiling of two next-generation hybrid vehicles in Detroit, both also bearing the C-MAX moniker.

The company says that the C-MAX Energi, its first-ever production plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, and C-MAX Hybrid, a full hybrid variant, will be introduced in the US in 2012 and Europe in 2013.

Both versions of the five-passenger vehicle will leverage the company’s global C-car platform, critically acclaimed powersplit hybrid architecture and advanced, lighter and smaller lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery systems, the latter developed and assembled in-house by Ford in Michigan.

The C-MAX Energi pairs a high-voltage lithium-ion battery and electric traction motor with a high-efficiency Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, and Ford says that the vehicle will offer more than 800 km of overall driving range using the battery and engine – more than any other plug-in or extended-range electric vehicle.

On start-up, the C-MAX Energi operates in charge-depletion mode, providing electric driving range, until the battery has been depleted or certain conditions are met, where it switches to charge-sustaining hybrid mode for continued optimal fuel efficiency.

While the C-MAX Hybrid operates much like today’s hybrid vehicles, the C-MAX Energi benefits from daily charging to maximise its all-electric range, and easily recharges 100% overnight on a 120 volt outlet. The C-MAX Energi shares the same five-point plug as the Focus Electric, and the charge port on the car is located between the driver’s door and front wheel well.

Both the C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid models will be built alongside the Focus Electric – which is set to go on sale late this year – at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, while European C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid production will be carried out in Valencia, Spain.

Detroit 2011: Ford unveils Vertrek Concept SUV

Ford has debuted its new Vertrek Concept SUV at the NAIAS – the four-seater design shows the direction the company is looking to take as it works to move forward from the Escape and Kuga and offer a stylish, compact SUV it can place into the global market.

It’s a slightly bigger offering than the two existing vehicles – the Vertrek is longer, wider and has a longer wheelbase than the Escape and Kuga. Design-wise, the kinetic design shape contains elements such as a rather imposing lower trapezoidal grille, a panoramic roof that runs centrally from front to rear glass surfaces, slim headlamps and taillamps as well as a muscular-looking hood and rising beltline (with a rear kickup) that lends the shape more agression.

Inside, premium materials dominate, as does a swooping centre console and prominent centre stack that flows down a central bridge through the vehicle, and the seats, finished in tanned, velour leather feature neon red-orange highlights.

The concept in Detroit features a 1.6 litre Ford EcoBoost turbocharged direct injection engine, and previews Ford’s Auto Start-Stop system as well. For the US market, potential engine choices are the abovementioned pot – available in 180 hp and 150 hp form, the latter for the European market – as well as a 2.0 litre EcoBoost and a 2.5 litre four-cylinder block, all paired with a six-speed transmission, while outside the American market a 2.0 Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel is a candidate to join the 1.6 litre EcoBoost unit.

Aimed at city dwellers, not just in the American and European market but also those in China, the Vertrek plays it big on cargo-carrying ability consumers are looking for, but without forsaking levels of craftsmanship and quality often lost in compact SUVs.

Inside the sleek, modern shell is a generous cargo volume more than rivalling that of the Escape, at 828 litres for the boot area and 1,879 litres from the first row back, and against the European Kuga, it offers 20% more space at the rear and 15% more space from behind the first row on.

There’s plenty of tech on call with this one – a wide suite of customer-focused Ford technologies including SYNC, active park assist, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert and Intelligent Access with push-button start are featured in the Vertrek concept.
